I couldn't touch the live ones at first, and so I bought the canned. Those are a nice compromise between live and freeze dried. They're smelly and tasty (for gliders) but don't squirm and store well in the freezer (once the can is opened). Mine didn't like the freeze-dried (like Flukers), but those are very convenient to take in a small container in your purse or bag. The exception on the freeze-dried mealies is the Mealie Snax, but the place I used to get them (NY Worms) doesn't have them in stock at the moment. I've never had a glider snub a nose at live mealies. They like the movement and enjoy "hunting" them when I place them throughout in foraging cups. If you're ambitious (it doesn't take much), you can farm your own and save money buying and having them shipped.

I had a mealworm farm but sometimes it seemed to be more work than taking care of the gliders. Recently I bought the freeze-dried ones and they love them. They're a little crumbly but I just throw the broken ones in a foraging cup or in with their food. I believe they came from Exotic Nutrition under the name Glider Grubs. I've never tried the canned.

Live Mealworms: Pros: -They are alive and good enrichment for the gliders because they wiggle and piques their interest. -They have tasty and gushy insides (their favorite part)! -Most gliders readily eat them, or will eventually. -They are pretty easy to raise/breed and take care of. -They do not smell (very much, if at all). -They are not very expensive if bought in bulk. -They go dormant in the refrigerator and only need to be fed once a week if kept refrigerated. -Most gliders will eat the pupa (aliens) if your worms are changing too quickly.
Cons: -They are alive and this grosses some people out. -Some people are allergic to them. -They are a larval form of Darkling Beetles, so not as healthy as adult insects (they contain more fat). -A majority of gliders will not eat the adult form (Darkling Beetle).
Canned Mealworms Pros: -They are already dead, so no 'creepy' wiggling. -They are easy to feed (again because there is no wiggling). -They are soft and still have their gushy insides, which the gliders like.
Cons: -They smell. -They do not keep for very long and are best refrigerated, if fed within a few days, otherwise they should be frozen. -People have actually found live Darkling Beetles in the cans, which means they were not cooked thoroughly. -Some gliders will not eat them. -They are more expensive.
Freeze-dried Mealworms Pros: -They are already dead. -They are easy to feed. -They keep for a long time.
Cons: -They have a slight odor to them, but not as bad as the canned. -There is no soft, gushy insides - they are literally a hard, hollow shell. -Many gliders will not eat them. -They are more expensive.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Can't I just get live ones at a pet store and not have them shipped?

Yes but you'll pay more. The reptile store in town sells them 10 cents apiece or $42 for 1000. I've still got 90 for now -- my guys don't seem terribly enthused about them.

The best prices I have found is at Grubco out of Fairfield Ohio, They will ship but the shipping is not to bad from them and it is $14 for 1000 mealies.
