It's that time of the year again for us Quebec residents: The Sugar Shack season! Old time recipies such as greasy bacon with small potatoes cooked in butter, sugar loaded maple syrup pourred over scrambled eggs, pancakes, ham and i'm not even speaking of the desserts! All of that served as an all you can eat buffet...not really good for the faint of heart! Now that i've made myself drool a little bit on the keyboard, here's the question i wished to ask you all. Does anyone give maple syrup as either licky-treats or include it in their meals? After all, maple syrup is boiled down tree sap and gliders being sap lovers... ? Nutrition Info of maple syrup

Are you talking real maple syrup from out of the tree or processed types that most of us buy at the store?

i live around so many sugar shack("cabane a sucre" in french) i can get the pure stuff whenever i want, without anything added to it. Some of the processed can in supermarket can contain up to 20% corn syrup! Talk about nasty stuff to taste! I've never seen anyhting about added sugar in maple syrup? Also, the pure stuff can be stored for well over 10 years, and never need preservatives. That said, after a 5year period they will refilter the syrup to insure nothing but the purest of quality will be sold off.

Even though sugar is in their name and they are known to feed on tree sap, large amounts of sugar are no better for gliders than they are for us. As you said, it's boiled down, concentrating the sugar. Also, the trees they feed off of are Australian trees like Eukalyptus, etc. rather than maple.
I would say it's okay to give one or two fingerfuls as an occasional (not every day) treat, but certainly not as part of a meal nor as something they get a lot of as a treat.

Yes, I'll second PeeperKeeper's post. As a treat, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. I've used it as a licky treat several times.

I know the condensed maple nectar isnt anything like the eucalyptus's sap, just pointed that it was the closest thing i could find in a pure form without any added 'bonus' to it. Other than that, i think a few drop as a licky treat could be a good way to win their trust real fast (that said, and i haven't gotten to pick up my 2 little ones yet!) So long as it isn't done too often or in too big quantities everyhting should be fine, right?

Yep, I give it every once in a while, to the one suggie that likes it LOL. But it's fine as a treat. Just not too often <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />
