I just read on another thread that someone had their female spayed. She has medical documentation of this.
I was just wondering how many people do this and why? Besides the non-pregnancy aspect of it, does it help with their smell as it does the male?
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOO HOOOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!

where did you read this? I did a search and found nothing. As far as I know it is not impossible, however due to their small size and the invasiveness of the surgery it is generally not practiced. Also as far as I know since the female does not have the head and chest scent glands spaying would not change the smell as it would with a male. Can you share the source of this thread? PM me if it is a controversial type thing as I am curious about this particular claim.

I would definately be curious to know also. I figured, since it is so much easier/safer to have a male neutered, why take the risk? Maybe cysts or something hormonal?

TnR is correct. It is in GLIDER ADS and the listing is by AmyNoel.

I have heard of this once before. There is no beneficial reason to have a female spayed. 99.9% of vets would not even consider doing this. It is much more involved and dangerous to do since their organs are so small. The surgery would be longer and more expensive than it would to have the male neutered.

Thank you Eddie. I had no plan, what so ever, of doing this but it did peak my curiosity a bit.

It is possible but...like Eddie said, it is so invasive and dangerous because of the organs being internal and so tiny. I get nervous each and ever time I have a male neutered! I don't think my nerves could withstand waiting why a female was being spayed!

Then I wonder, why in the world this was done to the one that I read about???

I am sorry. But I would have to see the documentation. For those of you that have seen the speciamens that Bruce has supplied it is next to impossible to do that. I have called not only my vet but 8 other glider vets I know and they said it would kill the female due to the "double" set of repruductive organs they have. The blood loose would be great and they have never heard of it done at any of the seminars they have been to. One will ugly to be and told me that was brutal and I should know better. Boy was I embarassed.

Ive heard of it... mostly Ive heard of it being done because something was wrong and they needed to go in and fix it. But I'm not quite sure if that's considered spaying. I've also heard of breeders selling baby females and telling the customers she was spayed, maybe to try to make it more appealing, and then when she is mature and with a male, there are babies >_<. Hmm... maybe there are also some "dirty vets" out there who will say they did it, and really do nothing, but still get paid? **conspiracy plots are running through my mind tonight**

Basically getting a female spayed is having a hysterectomy. So I would guess it have to be a reproductive medical issue to justify this. But the odds of the female surviving it is very low due to the amount of blood lose that will occur. Remember gliders don't have one uterus

I remember that a while back, a board member had their female glider spayed... I don't remember the reasoning behind the spay, but I was shocked that it was even considered, and even more so that it was actually done.

There is a vet in MO. that says he has spayed more than a couple of females. My jaw hit the floor when he told me that. I asked why in the world anyone would do that and he said some people just wanted it done(?) although he did say he didn't recommend it. This was several years ago when I was looking for a vet to neuter my oldest boy. I don't know that he will do this any longer - although I was VERY surprised to hear that he would have ever been willing to at all.
