Hello.

I just got my new glider home last night. The cage I had for him apparently had too wide of bars. He escaped. I know he is the room (the door was closed) but I can't find him. Is it normal for a glider to hide and not be found? Any suggestions for either how to find him or lure him out?

Leave a nestbox out at night with fruits and veggies, or any "enticing" treat, hopefully by morning you'll find it asleep in the box! Good Luck!

I know this sounds stupid .. but I so want to find him. What do you mean by nest box? Anything special that should be in it .. or just a box with fruits, etc.in it?

The first thing to do with a glider is to stay calm. Looks like you're not too worried about her escaping from the room, so I'm guessing it's 'glider proofed'.
This means that holes are blocked up s/he can escape from, including AC ducts. That sharp objects are hidden. That the room is generally safe enough for an overactive young child to play in. If there is a hole, they'll find it. Block all electrical outlets, as well.

Secondly, inspect any clothing in the room. Before you take anything out, inspect it, make sure there's nothing in there, as she may well be hiding in it.

And then, the waiting game. Get his/her sleeping place, and put it in a corner. HOPEFULLY, s/he will return to it before too long.

Please let us know how it goes.

Well, it may not be as bad as you think. Not to take anything away from what you are feeling. I would be worried sick. But there are a couple of things you can do for piece od mind. Place fresh food in the cage and place a small little bell hanging from a string at the cage's entrance. That should alert you when the glider enters to feed. Even dough the glider escaped from that cage it may not mean that the glider does not like the cage. The Glider just went out for a stroll! Place a "nest" of food close to an open dark area. They LOVE the dark and will naturaly be atracted to these areas. Once again, try to place items arround the area where you place the food that the glider may knock down and make some noice to indicate their position. This will happen MOST LIKELY at night when there is little or no human presence or better said "evidence of human presence". And last but also extremely important, CLOSE THE TOILET LID and do not leave the sink or a bucket of water deeper than two inches full of water in the house.
We invite you to join and register as a board member. Once you find your little rascal we would love to hear the entire experience and perhaps somebody could learn from it, not to mention we have much we would like to share with you!
Good luck and I hope to see your next post in "Glider Talk" with the tittle..."I foung My Glider....named Houdini! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />

THANKS!! .. I am worried sick. I have two young children so the house is pretty safe as far as that goes. I don't have any holes I am aware of in that room and there is no AC or heater duct. I have the door closed to the rest of the house and I don't THINK he can get under it. It is my bedroom, so I am sure there are tons of soft, snuggly places to curl up in so I am trying not to freak out too bad. I have registered but my password still hasn't shown up in my box <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />.

The person we got him from said, if she was keeping him, she would have to think about naming him houdini .. so I should have been warned.

I will definately take your suggestions and appreciate the support. I was [censored] out this morning. I think I am a little calmer now.

Thanks to all of you. I finally got my password to get logged in. This forum was recommended very highly to me and now I see why. I will post and let you all know when and where we find Bear. Thanks for helping to calm my terror. I am still worried .. but at least I now know gliders do this. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

First off, welcome to GC. I'm sure you'll find a bunch of useful information here, and before you know it you'll be a GC addict. I was convinced I wouldn't be, but I'm on this on and off all day every day. Thank goodness for a flexible job, heh.

More importantly right now.. Have you had any other luck?

Another way to catch him which I stupidly didn't suggest is to sit in the room at night and listen out for him. This is when a glider is most active, and you should be able to hear him rustling around. It could be a sleepless night for you, but at least you'll know he's in the room. If you don't hear him during the night at all, I would be concerned. In the meantime, I suggest you get something else to contain him whilst you adjust his new cage somehow, or buy another one. It's no good catching him and then putting him back in a cage where he'll just escape again.

Any update on the little fellow?

We have already gotten another cage that should hold him. We still haven't found him and I am back to terrified. I know I saw him yesterday morning but didn't get him caught. I keep hearing something that I think is him barking but haven't seen him. We do have other pets but they are all outside until we find and catch Bear. If anyone has any suggestions, I am very open to any and all.

Okay - if I was desparate, and I think you are - new glider in new surroundings. He may stay holed up a bit longer! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Get a raw, un-salted peanut or two - I know peanuts are aflatoxin threats but I promise you, nothing will get his attention better than a peanut! Set it in the room near you and wait - he will come and get it, I promise. You may want to have another one handy to bribe him with when he finishes the first one. Also have a blanket/towel to drop on him. It is his first day with you and he is scared! When he comes to get the nut, grop the towel on him and then you can move him to his cage/pouch. Good luck - please keep us updated! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />

I still haven't found Bear but last night he did come out and eat. I am still worried sick but if he is eating, I guess he will just need time. Thank you for all your advice. If any of you have any other suggestions, I am more than open to hear them. Until I know where he is, I am going to be nervous and upset and worried.

Is there any way you could offer him something warm and comfy to sleep in? Hang it from the ceiling, or somewhere high up that he would seem likely to go to? Put some food in there to attract him..? I would recommend staying in the room for a night. It'll be hard, but at least, hopefully, you'll be able to capture him. And the sooner, the better..

Thanks for the update. And at least he's still running around in that room. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

This is Just a suggestion. I know that most hardware stores have cages used by trappers that DO NOT hurt the animals. These cages are used to capture small animals like rabbits, rats, armadillos in your yard. I would look into getting one of these cages. The way it works is safe and secure. Once again...It is only a suggestion and if you can verify that they are safe.
The good news is that you glider seems to be safe because you have evidence that he has been eating and hanging out arround the house. If you chose to use the safe trap, make sure you put many irresistible snacks and goodies so the he will not have a chance to resist going in.

I know he is around. I hear him barking. Unfortunately, I have a hearing problem and cannot tell where the bark is coming from only that it is there. I keep calling him and talking to him. I have his bonding pouch and the sleeping tent, cube thing on the floor near the food. He did come eat last night. Is he apt to want to be up high or on the floor. He is loose in my bedroom so being in the room all night is not a problem. he just seems to waiting until my husband and I fall asleep to come out. As for the trap, I am in Alabama and I wouldn't trust the rednecks around here when it came to traps.

Gliders instinctively want to be high up, so I would bet he's found some nice little shelf or something to sleep on that's got toys in it to help him keep warm.

It's good that he's eating, and, as said, that he's definitely still confined to one room.

If you can somehow hang up the sleeping places near shelves, then there's a good chance you may find him there in the morning. Putting a little bit of food in both will also help encourage him to snuggle down for a sleep.

Actually, regarding the food.. try and put down watery foods like melon or cucumber to try and keep the little guy hydrated. They don't harm gliders digestive tracts, and he needs some water in any shape or form. This is a big problem with gliders.

Do you keep any lights on in the room whilst you're listening out for him? Keeping it as dark as possible will make it difficult for you to see him, but it's likely he'll come out earlier. Gliders are very light-sensitive.. they hate the stuff.

The other alternative is to carefully turn the whole room inside out, checking each item.

Thank you, Shaz. My husband and I have turned the room upside down looking for him. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find him. We think he has found a dark corner or crevise that we just can't get into and has curled up there. He is just SOO tiny. I bet he can get into places we just can't see. We are reluctant to use a flashlight to look for him. We have heard that bright light could damage his eyes.

A flash light will most likely just make him run away; if he doesn't like it, he'll either swear at you and run, or just run. Some stand and fight, but I doubt he's feeling up to that right now.

It's a shame that Gil's idea can't be used, as it's actually a very good one.. tempting a glider in is hard enough, but keeping him there is the real task due to their often less than short attention spans. Hopefully, the prospect of quiet sleep in a cosy pouch will work.. put a couple out in obscure places.. think like you think he would. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />

Do let us know how it goes. We're all pullin' for you finding the little houdini. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

We have not "found" him as in have him back in his cage. We have confirmed that he is in the room. He came out last night to eat. He munched out on apples and a grape or two. I have his bonding pounch near the food and his sleeping tent near it as well. I hear him barking and as soon as I call his name and start talking to him, he goes quiet and I can't find him. I have talked with Gil and discovered exactly what trap he means so I don't have to take someone's word for a trap being safe. I think my husband and I will try this tonight. I hope it catches him. I am still quite worried about him. He has to be lonely and afraid.

I have a suggestion that works for me EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! My little ones have escaped once or twice. I would suggest that you make a recording of glider sounds, barking usually works and play it. Mine have always come to see who the new voice belongs too. Works everytime. I found the sounds here, www.sugargliderinfo.com. I wish that I had a link but you can try it. Good luck and keep me posted. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> You will find him, promise.

Hi,

Sorry being so long with an update, computer issues kept me offline. I haven't found Bear. We have torn the house upside down and no luck. My husband finally heard him bark on Saturday. Sunday we tore apart the cabinet we thought he was under to find he wasn't there. I haven't heard him bark today. I am so worried and close to giving up. We have a trap set out and no luck. I am not sure if it isn't sensitive enough for how little he is or what. I have been keeping grapes, watermelon, peach, stuff like that out for him and it keeps disappearing. Water is accessible and that seems to be being drunk too. All this makes me feel like he is ok but I still worry and am at my wits end. I don't want to give up on him, but I am not sure what else I can do.

Try and just put a pouch on the floor with his food and water very near by. He is has found a place to hid during the day and by the time you go sleep he will come out.

If you can stay awake and quite he may come out and you can see him.

If he comes out be very quite and see if you can see him.

He has found a safe place to hide and sleep during the day and the night. Check EVERY piece of clothing and and shoes and all that he can get in.

Keep us posted.

Ohhhhh sounds like the lil stinker needs to be named "invisible" LOL, he sure is giving you a heck of a time! Have you tried to put the food IN the cube? I figured the trap won't go off with under 200 grams of pressure, how about the old fashiioned idea of a box upside down, the food on a plate under it, and it propped up with a stick on a string, I know it sounds SO childish, but it works! You'd need to be awake and if he barks, don't call him, pretend you're asleep, leave a very small nightlight on(like a 4 watt bulb) where you could JUST see him eating, and play the waiting game, it will work, patience is important though! LOL Good luck! (If you get really drowsy I suggest ending the hunt that night, and putting the fod back into the cube and leave the box righted next to it, so the smell becomes familiar)
