I don't have any gliders yet, but i've been reading a lot on the forums. I haven't come across this but i'm curious. During the spring/summer/fall months, i play softball and go outside often, as well as my daughter. When i get my suggies, at what age should you start taking them outside? i would imagine taking them out at a younger age so that they're comfortable with it and aren't as fast. that's what i did with my chihuahua and he stays nearby all the time, as opposed to a dog who usually stays inside - you take him out once and he runs off.
Basically - if/when and at what age should you expirement taking them outside?

I believe that almost everyone on here has their gliders in a zippered pouch when they take them outside. I used to take my joeys outside for a few minutes when they were 4-6 weeks old and not jumping around yet. If I took even my well- bonded glider outside without being in a pouch, I'd most likely never see her again. I, personally, wouldn't recommend it.

Our son's glider is extremely well bonded to him and he used to take her outside and play with her. Like the guy in the u-tube video... One day, she decided to explore a tree that was near by. He climbed the tree as far as he could, but she had found a bird nest a bit higher. He had to sit in the tree hoping she wouldn't decide to take a nap in the nest. 45 minutes later, and 5 min. before he had to leave for work, she finally came over to him. He would also let her run outside in our yard, no trees, on our trellis, but, when we noticed a hawk hanging around the yard, he stopped that.. Bottom line, it is rather interesting to watch them, but, there are so many unforeseen dangers of trusting them to the point of no bonding pouch I would never do it. They are just too curious and too adventurous little creatures.

anything that would maybe spook them,& they are gone forever.even when they are yrs bonded.i take mine out(in warmer weather)in a pouch. but, they are to be sleeping during the day,& if you take them someplace noisy, you may be failing on the bonding issue,as i feel they would be pretty scared of all the noises,& they will know you were the one to take them to this place.once they are older it may make a difference, but only a little one. Um i work with birds of prey, like hawks and eagles. I would not bring a sugar glider out. i seen how quickly these birds hunt without anyone noticing. I just see my gliders being eaten alive by a hawk.... so i dont bring mine out unless in pouch.
But maybe try a genji tent outside? But then again if you're at a game, people are gonna want to see probably and then you run the risk of an escaped sugar glider and lots of people who could step on him.
Im too scared to do it... sorry im not much help!

I agree. Our boys are very bonded and we never take them outside unless they are in their travel cage or bonding pouch. In fact, we never take them out in the day unless we really have to as they are sleeping anyway.

Some people do take their gliders outside, but some people have also lost gliders when they are outside. Gliders are VERY fast at any age (once they are weaned) and the concern comes from the things you can't control, like loud noises, sudden movements, etc. Most people that do take their gliders outside (without a zippered pouch) got used to their gliders, and vice versa, while inside until they felt comfortable their gliders would stay with them. I have taken gliders out of their pouch outside, I also have a glider that used to unzip the pouch to climb up to my shoulder. I was always super careful and after knowing someone and reading stories about other gliders that were lost even though the bond was very strong, I stopped letting mine out when outside.

If you do take them outside just make sure they are secured in a bonding pouch (a zippered one works) and that the weather isn't too extreme (super cold or super hot). Also maybe take them outside on your porch or back yard for short trips to see if they seem scared or upset, you know your gliders best. I know some people let theirs out without any pouch but I personally wouldn't simply because there is too much of a chance to lose them. Good luck! I took mine with me everywhere, to the park or the store, and they never minded.

NEVER OUTSIDE WITHOUT A ZIPPERED POUCH. NOT EVEN IN A TENT! Not only is it unsafe because of natural elements, and as HappyToBeHere has stated * birds of prey*, noises, just curiosity alone will lure it up a tree. (as it did my new born, rescued squirrel, years ago). HAS ANY ONE CONSIDERED THE PARASITES & BACTERIA THAT IS ON & IN THE GROUND? If a dog or cat runs through the yard that has worms, it drops eggs that can not be seen. Even a bird flying over, leaving droppings. This is why reputable dog breeders have to have their runs & ground treated. These can be transmitted to people! Why take the chance? You love your suggies, so don't take a chance just because "it's cute". ....just SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!

You also mentioned playing soft ball. I would advise not taking the gliders with you while play ball. Since you can't have them on you while playing you would have to either leave them with someone else. This person might not know what to care for them. I might be too paranoid, but I would try not to do this.
Good question though!
