Allira, one of my females, has had 5 joeys in pouch to date. Each of the first four were in pouch for less than 5 weeks before they "disappeared". I was convinced that the 5th, most recent, joey was going to survive this time. It made it past the crucial 5 week stage and for the past week Allira has been singing her heart out! I got to see an arm, hand, leg, ear & tail at various points during the last week. From the pigmentation of the tail, it was obvious that this joey would be coming out of pouch soon. I was prepared to hand-raise the joey if she rejected it once it came out of pouch if necessary. Last night, when getting ready for bed, I heard her singing to the joey again. I thought, in the midst of the singing, that I heard the joey cry a couple of times. This alarmed me, so I got out of bed, turned on the lights & pulled Allira out of her nesting pouch. She looked at me with big eyes as if to say "What's going on? I'm just singing to my joey, here..." Upon close examination, the joey was still in her pouch and everything looked to be fine & normal. I shrugged my shoulders and thought I must have imagined the crying and so I went back to bed. How I wish I had stayed up longer. I know I probably wouldn't have been able to prevent what happened, but my heart tells me I should have done something . When my hubby got up for work this morning, he was talking to Allira, like he always does first thing in the morning, and when she came over to him, he said, "What did she do with the joey?" I looked over and said, "She's probably got it tucked away right now." But I decided to take a closer look, just to make sure. I was horrified to discover that the joey was not in her pouch. Immediately, I started a frantic search of the nesting pouch, then the rest of the cage. The joey is completely gone without a single trace. My heart is breaking and I can't stop crying... I was so sure this little one was going to survive, and now it's gone...
cry cry cry
Edited to add:
I know that Allira is probably already pregnant again, but I will not be allowing her to breed again after this. I haven't made my mind up as to whether I will neuter Gizmo or whether I will get him a different mate & put Allira in with Daisy instead for companionship to each other... Right now I'm too raw & hurt to make that decision...

My hubby & I discussed it last night & we decided to get Gizmo neutered. I'll be calling the vet today to make an appointment for him. I realize that Allira is probably already pregnant again, but at least there will be an end in sight. Allira is acting normally and running around like nothing happened. Her resilience amazes me.

You could have stayed up all night and it would have still happened sooner or later. There was really no way that you could have stopped this.

I'm so, so sorry for your loss.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming

Im sure you know in your heart that even if you had stayed up all night long, there would have been nothing you could have done. Yet I know it doesnt stop the pain. Prayers coming your way my friend, may your heart heal soon. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.
