Chance's face is swollen..
I noticed it earlier but it just looked like his face was fluffy...I was cleaning cages tonight and he was awake and I noticed it was still like that but bigger..
Here is a couple pictures...

It is not really his face it is kind of beside his chin.

The vet is out on Friday Saturday and Sundays...I have an emergency vet that is good....but I am not sure about if I should wait until Monday or if I need to call the emergency vet tonight.

I felt it and it didnt seem to hurt him when I touched it. I seen him drink when he first got up but I have not seen him eat yet...but he also never eats when he first wakes up and he has only been awake about 30 minutes.

and it is only in 1 little spot.
that is why i circled it so you could see it and to show how it was just a little knot...but it has gotten bigger since earlier this afternoon.
It was about 2 or 3 this afternoon when i first noticed it.

i took this clip from sugar gliders r us, I believe this is what your baby has frown Do you feed hard foods?

Lumpy Jaw (Impacted Salivary Gland)

Lumpy jaw, or actinomycosis is an infection primarily caused by the bacterium Actinomyces israelii. Infection most often occurs in the face and neck region and is characterized by the presence of a slowly enlarging, hard lump. It produces abscesses and can also infect the lungs and intestinal tract and other parts of the body and can lead to gangrene and other complications. It is fatal if left untreated.

Causes:
Bacteria are introduced into the facial tissues by trauma, surgery, or infection. The most common cause in gliders is dental abscess

Prevention:

Moisten dry, hard foods before feeding them to your gliders
bullet

Do not feed low quality cat food to your gliders

Consider that gliders were designed to eat primarily insects and gums

I do not feed any kind of hard food at all.

Every once in a while I will give them an unsalted sunflower seed but it is not an every night thing.

He is acting completely fine..just a knot on his face.
I feed the BML with fresh fruit and veggies..and yogurt once or twice a week and scrambled eggs once or twice a week.
and a couple other treats.

I have had him since November 23rd and his previous owners fed him cherrios and frosted flakes and apples.

Whenever there is swelling, this is always cause for concern. My suggestion is to get him into see the E-vet ASAP. If there is an infection, waiting will cause more harm. He will need to be put on antibiotics right away.

Sending prayers your way.

but he says if he starts to act any different at all then to bring him in right away.

He is acting just fine..

I am going to watch him for a while and if I see it is bothering him i am going to bring him in.

Should I go ahead and take him in?
I am doing what I did with Speedy when he was sick...I keep him up out of the cage until I go to bed..I dont go to bed until atleast 3 in the morning.

I am thinking about taking him in anyways.

If they said that you can bring him in now, I would do so. You will just be up all night worrying, and the sooner he's looked at the better for him.

ive been feedin a couple of pellets very hard food to my gliders every day for 6 yrs now to protect their teeth and give them branches they tear into. this prevents lumy jaw. in the wild gliders strip bark off the trees and eat the sap. bark is very tough and hard. you need to have the abcess lanced and have a bacterial culture and sensitivity done on the fluid to see what antibiotic is correct but in the meantime i would use a broad spectrum antibiotic

After looking over his pictures again, just looking at his eyes, you can tell that he's not feeling well. Gliders will hide their illness's extremely well, usually, once something becomes obvious, this is the time to take action.

I'm not trying to cause you more stress, but I strongly believe that this is something that needs taken care of right away.

My glider had that issue but it was due to a bacterial infection. Luckily he got rid of his with 2 oral medicines and 1 that was applied to the swollen area. But he had to be separated from his family for a couple of weeks.

He went to the vet last night.
The vet did some test last night.
Every thing came back normal.
He made me an appointment for 1:30 this afternoon so he can do more test today.
Hopefully we will find out what is wrong with him today.

He is still looking the same as yesterday and acting normal still.I have had him separated from Roxy since I woke up.

Oh and the vet also forced him to take fluids.
He was a little dehydrated. and i noticed he didnt eat much at all last night.
I fed them the same as I always do and barly any of the food was gone. I know that Roxy ate but Chance didnt look like he did. He was not dehydrated this morning when I got up. But I made him eat some yogurt anyways.
I think it might bother him to chew things. Because the vet offered him a papaya treat and he wouldnt take it.
But he did eat some applesauce at the vets office.

So I have been checking him every so often and then I give him some licky treats.

I found another exotic vet today in my area that deals with sugar gliders..so if my E-vet doesnt find anything or I see he can do a better job I am going to take him to the other vet.

Okay the E-vet wasnt able to get ahold of today so I took him to the other vet that I have never been too.
If I knew Chance's face could wait until Monday then I would have never took him there.

The vet rubbed his knot and said it was a abscess.
He poked a hole in it and drained it.

I cryed because Chance was crying...

I have never felt so bad in my life.

I asked him to give him some pain medicine because I could tell by the look of it it hurt bad.

He gave him some antibiotics..batril.
I have to put it in his water.
but he said he couldnt give him no pain medicine because he didnt know how much to give him and was afraid of over dose.

I was like how long have you been messing with gliderS?
he said Chance would be my 3rd glider.

I was so mad at myself.

There was no way I could get ahold of my vet..I left her a msg to call me back so I can tell her every thing and make sure he did every thing right...since he has only worked on 3 gliders.

So my question to yall.....

1) Should he have ran any test to determine if it was an abscess?

2) If it is a abscess should all he have done was drain it?
(He talked about putting him to sleep to work on it better but I said NO because I don not want a beginner non experienced vet working on something like this.)

3)Is Baytril okay to give?

4) He said that it would be okay for me to put him back with Roxy even though he has a open wound now. But I have heard of other gliders grooming other glider wounds and it gets worse..Should I separate them?

5) he wants me to put the antibiotics in his water and too not change it until it is all gone so he knows he gets the medicine. What if Roxy drinks it? Will it hurt her?

6) Should I put and extra water bottle in there for Roxy? How do I get her not to drink it and how do I get Chance to drink the water with the medicine?

7) Does he need pain medicine?

Chance has been separated from Roxy all day and I put him back with her just a minute ago and he started marking her.
Good news? LOL

I know he is not feeling well because he is always awake by 7pm. Today he didnt wake up until 8:20ish.

I am so worried because I did not know that vet has only seen 2 other gliders..Chance was his 3rd..So he doesnt know much at all..compared to a vet that sees them on a regualr basis..

I need my vet back!!!!!!!!!!!..

So please help..

The one thing I see is that you dont want to put his meds in his water because then if he dont drink it all then he wont get all his meds. How much did they tell you to give him. Baytril is a good range antibiotic.

How big is the wound. Im not sure if you should seperate them or not. You could watch and make sure she is not grooming it. You really need to take him to someone that knows what they are doing. Not sure about if he needs pain meds. Maybe someone else will come along and help.

I am going to take him to our regular vet when ever she decides to get into the office.

The wound hole is the size needle.
There is 2 marks because he poked the knot 2 times with a needle.

Some of the infection came out.

I am just confused.
any time I need my vet she is always there and then when there is an EMERGENCY she has to be out.....uhhhh

Would the vet consider consulting with an experienced glider vet?

If his cage mate isn't bothering his jaw, leave them together but watch them very closely!

I agree about not putting the antibiotic in the water. Obviously, the vet has no clue how much water they drink. Give it to him in some regular yogurt (I use Activia peach flavor) not diet. He should eat it that way with no problem. If he doesn't like peach, use the flavor he does like.

Is he eating and drinking ok? If he acts as tho it hurts to eat, give him baby food with no seasoning, onion, garlic or preservatives or puree his food. What diet is he on?

I'm so sorry yore going through this with him. Poor baby.

My biggest concern is, if the vet didn't know how much pain med to give, how did he know how much antibiotic to give??? From my experience, .05 seems like a very large dose. The most antibiotic I've ever been instructed to give, was way smaller than that. If it were me, I would keep trying to find another vet who has glider experience, to double check the dosage and to get pain meds, at the very least. If you can find an experienced vet to go to, I would do so, before Monday.

I'm sending prayers your way!!!

I am going to ask if he would consider talking to other vets.
If any one has a good vet I would love to have their number.

I have him on the BML with fresh fruits and veggies.

Last night he didnt each much at all.

Today is drinking and eating.
I checked that before I put him in his cage.
So far Roxy has not messed with his spot.
I will take pictures in the morning of his boo boo.
It doesnt look bad at all.
It is just different.
I dont like looking at him with a swollen face and 2 little needle marks.

good news is he is back to his hyper self:)
and the swelling has gone down some.

I am going to go back to vet searching in the morning..and believe me I am asking way more than just do you deal with sugar gliders.
I am asking a million questions.
