Hi,

I adopted Gus from Mary (in Houston area) a couple weeks ago, he is approx. 8 weeks now. Last night he started shakeing during trick or treating. He was not near the door, but I though maybe all of the new noises (voices) might be scaring him. I checked on him later, and he was fine not shakeing. This morning he has been shakeing again. I have tried warming him up, thinking he might be cold, but he is still shakeing. He is on the BML diet with fruits, veggies, and protein. He has been eating and pee/pooping normally.

Does anyone have any idea why he is shakeing?

Hi Rena! It could be a stress related issue, but with the extremely young age, I would call Mary and discuss it with her. I personally think a joey should remain with its parents until they are at least 8 weeks oop or more, but that view is not shared by all. Calcium deficiency comes to mind as well, but with the BML diet, I wouldn't think that would necessarily be the case. If the little one has been eating well and getting plenty of the BML with the Rep-Cal Phos. free Calcium w/D3 and Herptivite, the calcium should be alright. Try gently pinching up some skin behind your little ones neck and see if the skin returns to its flattened state or if it tents. If it tents, your baby likely is suffering from dehydration and some Pedialyte and possibly sub-Q injection of fluids would be in order. I would certainly call Mary and see whether she suggests some possibilities and a vet visit may well be in order. Keep us posted and ask away as I'm sure others with more experience can offer more assistance.

Thank you, I have a call into Mary now, but had to leave a message. I have done the pinch test his skin does not tent. As far as his age, someone had a pair of glidders and did not want joeys, but did not get the male neutered. They took the baby to Mary when he was 5 weeks oop. They also told her they would contact her if they had any more... He has been on BML every since he arrived at Mary's, I don't know before that though. He has been doing great until last night he his bonding well hardly ever crabs, will come to my hand and voice, etc. I am just concerned I have never seen (or felt) him shake like this.

Oh, one other thing, he has been very active over the last day. He would normally be a sleep now. But has not been to sleep yet this morning.

If you continue to have a problem with the little one....you may want to consider having him vet checked to insure all is well. With the weekend coming....need to locate a vet today for if it is a problem....vet care on Sat and Sunday is almost impossible and waiting till Monday may be too late.

Might want to carry him tucked inside your shirt. If he is cold this will give him the added warmth needed for his tiny body. Joeys that are pulled early are rather small for their age and it takes a few more weeks for them to catch up with little joeys that are their same age.

I am guessing this shaking is stress related. But anytime behavior suddenly changes...it usually indicates there is another problem. Therefor a vet check sometime today...and especially since it is Friday....needs to be sought.

Keep us updated on how things go.

Hi, I took Gus to the vet this afternoon. He said he really was not sure what might be wrong with him, and why he is shakeing uncontrollably. He did give him a shot of Baytril, a Steroid, and an anti-inflamatory. He told me to watch him, tonight. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Gus is still Shaking, I am feeding him his BML through a dropper because he has a hard time holding his head still. And, his right back leg is sore where he received all of his shots. Does anyone have any ideas, I read a post from an Amy(?) I have sent an e-mail to her. She said she had two that had symptoms close to Gus' and the vet gave them Baytril and Calcium followed up with another antibotic flagil (?). Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It sounds like Gus needs to get to a vet now. Is your vet glider experienced that you took him to today? IF not you may want to eamil BMX one of our MOd's who lives in the Dallas area and she can get you to her vet.

Please keep us posted.

Does Gus ever stop shaking ? I mean for any period of time. I know one of my girls will shake if she is frightened, but if I cuddle her she will stop. She does not do it all the time. Do you have the temp right in the room? Has he ever heard the door bell ring, cause of it being Halloween and all. New sounds can scare them. Just wondering. Let us know and keep up updated:)

Since you will be going back to the vet tomorrow...suggest you have him show you how to administer fluids under the skin. With this baby being so ill...and from my experience of very sick gliders....it does not take long for them to dehydrate out should you not be able to get enough food and fluids down him.

Also, you may consider picking up a French Cather size #5 and snip it with scissors till it is about 1 1/2 inces in length. Cost is less than $3. This cather I use to hand tiny joey that are just oop. It is very easy to monitor the food flow such as the BML without getting it up his nose. It should help you with hand feeding your sick joey. It slips onto a 1 ml or 3 ml syringe.

Sending prayers for little Gizmo.

For pics of French Cath go to my web site listed below then click Orphan Joey...and scroll down the page. This will give you idea on how to feed your little one with the cath.

I just wanted to update you on Gus. We went back to the Dr. he ran fecal/urine test both were neg. He gave him another shot of Baytril,
calcium, and valium (?), and he sent us home with everything for the weekend, even his cell phone #. He was having to go out of town. He is
waiting for a few call backs trying to figure out what is wrong. He is still shaking when he is awake, and it is worse when he tries to eat, so I
have been holding him to feed him. He dos seem to shake less when he is asleep.

The Dr. just called to check on him.

Thanks for the update Rena! Best wishes for a quick recovery coming your way and be sure to keep updating us as you have the time. Poor little guy should've been able to remain with his parents, but we can't turn back time and convince everyone of the impact & importance of that fact. It's amazing how even a couple of weeks or so can give the added edge to a joey with regard to the immunities passed from Mom and lessons passed by both parents that we humans can't replicate! sounds like your vet is on top of the situation and you are doing everything to help your little guy pull through this like a champ!

I do not beleive this joey's problem come from being pulled a couple of weeks too early. This baby was turned over to Mary when it was pulled. And I know Mary feeds a very good diet as she does a lot of rescues. This little one I am guessing....somehow slipped through the cracks so to speak as to being healthy and unknowingly. The added stress of going to one new home is very stressfull...and two homes within two weeks has taken it's toll.

More than likly the problems are from the diet the parents were on while this little one was developing inside and outside of pouch. This would more than likely have happened if the joey had remained with it's parents and with their previous owners. Most gliders that are given up are on bad diets. Seems the general public still does not know or have the resources for learning.... while a few just do not realize the improtance of a proven diet.

Still sending prayers.

I just wanted to make sure that I had not given anyone the impression that Mary had not taken care of him. She takes very good care of all of her gliders. I have contacted her to let her know of what is going on with Gus, and unfortunately she did not not what might be wrong with him. He has been on the BML diet made exactly as the recipe states, since she received him.

He is every active right now still wobbley. And, pee and poop are still normal. But he seems to have strength in his hands and feet. Its just that he is still so shakey.

I just wish I knew what I could do that would make him better. He has been such a sweet little guy every since we picked him up. And, even at the vet he did not crab or attempt to bit even when he was getting his shots.

I just wanted to give you an update on Gus. Today has been much better. He has been sleeping more today, and has been up playing and grooming himself and my finger. His shaking as become so much better, it has not stopped completely but is better. He has been eating and drinking off and on all day.

The vet is still trying to findout what might be going on. We went again yesterday and he gave Gus another shot of calcium, baytril, and valium (?). Today we have only used the calcium and the baytril.

We did not do blood work, we were kind of advised not to do this because he is so young and small 43 grams.

Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to give you an update.

This joey is doing good. Good mama and great vet care.

Since he is getting better....I am guessing it was Lack of a good diet rich in calcium and perhaps a secondary infection. Continue as per instructed by your vet as well as the BML diet plan. In another week or so....you will have one healthy little baby. See to it he stays on this diet and you should not have any more problems that are dietary related.
