Lilo's babies have been oop 1 week today. Their eyes are not open yet, but they finally have some fur and their ears are standing up. My son named the Alex and Marty (The lion and the zebra on Madagascar). I am able to tell the difference between them because Marty is just a little bit bigger than Alex. However, here is my problem. Everytime I take them out to play, Marty's belly is full and I can see the white in his tummy, but Alex, I can't. He is always warm, but I never see him nursing either. Whenever Lilo comes out of the pouch, Marty is with her and clinging and nursing, but Alex isn't. She leaves him in the pouch. And he cries alot. Tonight was the same, I walked into the bedroom from dinner and Lilo came running as she always does with that look like "Mealie? Now!" She had Marty with her, but Alex was in the pouch crying. I took Alex out and he had little marks on his face like he had been bitten or scratched or something. I can't get my aquarium to set up an incubator til tomorrow evening, it's in storage and I have to go to NC in the morning. Is it safe to put him back? And, if not, any suggestions on how I can keep him warm tonight? Or, should I just put him back and hope it doesn't happen again? HELP I'm so confused, and scared for my little one, his eyes aren't even open yet!!!

DoesMom amdDa still try tokeep her warm and feed her?? If so, i wouldnot worry about supplement herjust yet-but if the have rejected her i would use a heating pad and a small plastic container with holes till you can get your aquarium and start feedings of the joey bml every 2 hours.

It is possible that she just does not have enough milk for both and the larger one is going to win if that is the case. Try to supplement feed the smaller one and up the moms protein. After you are done feeding the joey go ahead and put it back in with mom and dad so they can clean and stimulate it. Here you will find the instructions on what to watch for and what to do.
Best of luck and keep us posted. How long are you going to be in NC?

I'll only be in NC a couple of hours. I go every Fri and Sun, to pick up kids, drop off kids, etc, do the switch thing with dad lol. It's 5 hrs on the road round trip I am usually there about an hour, so 6 hrs tops I'll be back home. I never see mom nursing him, just Marty, and he is CONSTANTLY nursing. I was also worried about the marks on his face, could they be trying to hurt him? or could that just be jostling for position with his brother to get in there to nurse. I don't know, I am SO scared for my baby!!!

[:"green"]The marks on the face are a big worry to me. I would pull the joey immediately and start hand-raising it. Any time there are marks on the face it is usually because the mother has started nipping at the joey when it tries to nurse. I wish I had been on here last night when you first posted... I hope I'm not too late. I would not put the joey back in with the parents at this point. Please take the joey with you when you go to NC today. Stop every couple of hours to feed him for a few minutes. It will only take about 10 minutes per feeding - so it will add about a half hour to your trip, but it could very well save his life... If you need me, please call me at 440-953-0904 or toll-free at 866-399-4476 (preferably before 9 p.m. ET unless it's an emergency). Elisabeth already gave you the link to my web-page...
I'll be praying for you & the little guy...

Hey, we went to NC and back today without incident. Alex ate well, he went potty well. I was soooo happy. My only problem now is that on the way home tonight, someone pulled out in front of my husband slamming on brakes and the aquarium is in a thousand little pieces all over the floor board of his truck. I need some ideas on what else I can do to keep him warm tonight til I can get to a wal-mart in the morning to get another one!!! So here I go with my loooong journey of sleepless nights and feeding Alex every couple of hours. And, I thought that my sleepless nights ended when my kids were done with bottles lol.

Mods, please move this to real stories. Alex went to the rainbow bridege at 4:52 today. Yesterday, he started getting a little dehydrated so I got some pedialyte in him. This morning he seemed to be a little better, but after eating at 6:30 this morning, he wouldn't take anymore food or pedialyte except for 2 or 3 drops at a time. He went downhill really fast, I got worried and took him to the vet. They took samples of his poo and didn't find anything, and gave him a sub-q injection to get him rehydrated, but the last thing they said was that it didn't look good for him to make it, that he was just too weak. I came home a cried and cried and called Suz and cried and cried to her. I think I have called her 2 or 3 times a day since I had to pull him. Suz, thanks, you have been such a WONDERFUL friend and support the last few days. I continued to hold him and cuddle and love him. I even tried to feed him a little bit, but he was so weak that he wouldn't take it. He died in my hands. To everyone that has had to hand raise joeys and then lost them I don't know how you do it, this is so hard!!! I feel as if I've lost one of my children. To everyone hand raising joeys now, I wish only the best and pray with everything I have in me, that you don't have to bear this. I tried so hard to save him, I cried and begged him to fight and was even begging God not to take my baby. GOD, this is soooo hard, how do I.... oh I don't know what I want to ask.

I am sooo sorry! Loosing a joey like that is terrible. Duncan is a twin I'm hand raising. He is 4 weeks oop today and doing well. Sadly, I wasn't able to save his twin Blake. And yes, it does hurt so badly.

My prayers that your heart heals soon and be filled with peace. Please know this is not your fault. He was just needed over at the rainbow bridge sooner then others.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

[:"green"]Ah Jenn, I'm so very, very sorry ... I prayed & prayed & prayed for him ever since your call earlier in the day asking about his eating. After your call when you got back from the vet's, I prayed even harder... But, as I told you earlier, you did absolutely everything you could for him. Know that he felt your love & care for his short little life & died knowing your love . Yes, your grief will seem unbearable for awhile, but keep the precious memories of your time with him at the forefront of your thoughts. If you need me, you know my number...
