I did comment on another post but I thought I would just add my own post to let you all know the truth. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> I have sat low and now I really need to let you know about the true legality of gliders in Pennsylvania!!! I reside in PA at the moment, I am getting ready to move to a Glider friendly state soon. Well heres the story!

On February 28, 2006 I also had a visit from the Pennsylvania State Game Commission! He came in and asked me if I owned sugar gliders and insisted on seeing them. He then told me that we had a huge problem and he didnt know what to do about it. He said that I was faced with felonies for using the internet to purchase illegal animals, For bringing Illegal animals into the state of PA, and with owning illegal animals.

He told me that if I cooperated he would allow me to take my gliders and hedgehog out of the state and not kill them, but if I did not cooperate he would take my pets and discard of them there way, and charge me with everything he could and put all my fines in my husbands name so he cant go Active Military.

So I got a foster home for my animals so he didnt take them (thanks again Jen), and he visited my home on March 17, 2006 to be sure they were gone, and told me that I would recieve my citations in the mail. Well I got 3 citations for bringing illegal wildlife into the state of PA and my fines came to around $300.00

If you have any more questions on them being legal or not in PA go ahead and contact Mark Allegro in the Franklin game commission office, thats who came to my home!!! Or you can contact me for further questions or details of what happened, I will be glad to share it with you to prevent it from happening again!!!! Thanks

I still find this the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. All the murders, drugs, sexual abuse of children, missing children, etc... and some states are wasting tax dollars on this. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" /> Very sad.

Wow! For those of you residing in PA and continue to try and purchase a glider, please be aware of the repercussions of doing so!!! I see people time and time again trying to purchase gliders even knowing they live in an illegal state. The Federal Government does NOT like it when we do things they tell us we shouldn't and in fact, it causes them to do mean and ugly things in retaliation such as; putting citiations in someone else's name so their military career comes to a screeching halt.....they have the power.....So, keep signing those petitions and lobbying for LEGALIZING glider ownership in PA. If enough people stand up and cry foul, they have to listen. They're losing revenue by not charging a fee for exotic pet ownership and legalizing them. Maybe if they are forced to see it as an EASY addition to their bottom line they'll be more inclined ot legalize them there.

Good Luck to all of you!!

Paula, I agree with you 100%. Since we know the USDA paroles these sites on occasion, maybe they'll get the hint that there are more important things for them to be focusing on than arresting and fining big, bad, sugar glider owners, huh?

from 2001-2003 a lady by the name of sandy reynolds was fighting with the pagc, in regards to her animals, they were seized and a court battle ensued, she wanted the law to be more specific.. hence jeopardizing all gliders and all exotics within the state of pa.
here is the link where the court ordered the return of the animals.
court order to return animals

as of 4/3/04 the animals have still not been returned.

as is seen the law is still very unclear and all exotics are in jeopardy of being confiscated at any time. the necessary permits can not be aquired.

There is a petition online to deal with the pagc it is at

PAGC Hall of shame/ online petition

here is one of the lastest threads on GC regharding this issue.. there is a link to the current law but the link doesn't work.

highly suggest getting everything in writting, on their letter head being very specific as to the needs and requirements.

as far as any gliders being legal in PA, from what I understand none of them were.. there are several permits required, at one point we had 3 breeders, which all was under the impression they were legal, they all had the exotic breeders permit as well as their usda license.. however there were 2 other permits that were required but they were not informed of them, all of their records were confiscated from what i understand, and all that had permits issued were visited or notified as to they legality.

therefore all gliders bred in PA were technically bred illegally, and no permits were going to be issued because there was no legal gliders to start with.

this has always been an iffy thing with PA, they can change according to their own whimms, and the interpetation of the person of the commission. no one is on the same page.

the laws are vague enough they can be turned againbst you, as well as work for you.

The USDA only patroles registered/licensed users for the most part. You can report people to the USDA but they normally don't do anything unless it is a huge violation of their regulations.

Every state has their own requirements... PA isn't the only state like this. If someone tells you a state is illegal and most people tend to agree.... it would be wise to keep those illegal animals out of the state... I am so glad this turned out well for the gliders.

Incredible. I'm just glad these gliders are safe, too. Makes me glad I live in Ohio.

How did the PA Game Commission come to know about your gliders in the first place?

As noted above, and as sad as it is some of the enforcement agencies do watch boards like this for potential law violators…

Yes, it is sad. I'd much prefer my tax dollars going to a more worthy cause.... c'est la vie, I suppose.

However, I do find it hard to believe that a person surfing these boards (law enforcement or otherwise) could figure out where you live and show up at your door one day. Unless you specifically say, "HEY I LIVE AT 123 FAKE STREET, SOMETOWN, PA 18124, COME GET ME!" .. or GliderCentral is in the habit of releasing server logs and otherwise private account information.

Disclaimer: I don't have gliders, just check back here every once in awhile to see if there's been any progress. Of course if they ever become legal I suppose I'd start seeing them in local pet shops.

They are trying to pass a "Python Bill" in Florida because people are turning their snakes loose in the Everglades and they are growing BIG. I was told by someone who volunteers at the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa (rescues tigers, panthers, cheetahs, etc. that people bought for pets)that the original bill banned "exotics," however I heard since that the word exotic was removed and it looks like this bill won't pass but...there are people out there trying to stop ownership of exotic pets. I don't mind NOT having to watch out for pythons crossing the road - but I want to keep my gliders. Those aren't exact facts about the bill because I play with gliders instead of reading the paper.

Go Mikey, Go Mikey....LOL

I think it's RIDICULOUS and if they're watching....SHAME ON PA!!!! Their are hundreds of sick, neglected and dying gliders in need of rescue to loving homes and lots of people in PA who would give anything to give them a loving home, but hey, when the state of PA can come in and ruin your life and career...

I have a sister in law who is a KNOWN crack addict, dealer, whatever and we've tried 1,000 times to have her arrested. She has robbed people, stolen their cars, wrecked their cars, been caught out at 3 am cracked up with her 6 week old baby and no food or diapers, but heyyy, you bad, bad suggie lovers....You should SO be punished for loving an animal.

that is sooo true. i can't stand it when law "enforcers" decided that surfing the web in order to catch "criminals" with a loved pet is ok. if they want to do any good they should stick to looking for people who are actually doing damage, like murders and gang bangers. I hope they will learn that sugies are not bad just loveable and soon.

Being British, I've never really understood why some states make a certain animal illegal, and others allow them!

To be honest, I don't see why any state would want sugar gliders to be illegal.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif" alt="" />

The fears that some states have is the "what ifs". These what ifs are born out of ignorance of the species.

"What IF gliders can spread monkey pox"
"What if gliders are released into the wild and survive and establish a wild colony, what will it do to the native flora and fauna?"
"What if someone gets sick and dies from something they caught from a glider, will the state be liable for damages?"
(yet dogs and cats, both know carriers of communicable diseases are allowed, ie..rabies to name one)

California is scared of gliders taking over the wildlife and destroying crops or some such non sense. Same with ferrets. Thought for sure they would become legal when the "governator" came into office. CA seem to at least give owners time to find their animals a new legal home rather than busting in and raiding homes to euthanize animals. PA seems to be going overboard. Its all just crazy. I'm really glad those suggies are all safe.

I'm a bit ashamed to admitt that PA is my home state. My family still lives there, my question is if I want to go and visit my Dad can I bring my gliders with me? Visiting (vs) living, what's the law? Thank-you

roxy- I think the best thing for you to do would be to find an Experienced sitter in your area to care for your fuzzies...better safe than sorry...Plus~You'll probably enjoy your vacation in Cali Much Much more if you aren't concerned about the "What If's" the entire time you're there. Good Luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Why risk it? What IF something happened? What if you need a vet? Do you already have a vet lined up? What if you get caught and they take your glider from you? Is it worth risking them being put down?

A week with a glider sitter isn't that long at all. You can leave plenty of fleece blankets with your scent on them for your gliders to cuddle with and just spoil them like crazy when you get back to make up for it.

Sadly, I will be moving to PA in 2 weeks. I do not breed, How are these permits attainable? Unless any of you guys are volunteering to take 3 gliders and a live in pet Yava.... I will not be without my gliders....

Do any of you have the numbers I need to start the permit process? My gliders are VA born, so they are legal.

I have gliders in PA - but, I keep it quiet. I am trying to track down actual instances of harassment by the PGC - Pennsylvania. I have posted here on the site, searched the web, etc. I have a lead on one case. It doesn't look common to me. Hopefully the PGC has better things to do than to try to manage 'Pocket Pets.'

I just emailed someone to get the law number and the exact wording. I think that they are just pulling your leg. Any animal has to be defined in the law. They can't arbitrarily just assume a broad spectrum. I live in VA and this is a Commonwealth too. They have wierd laws but if you challenge the guy using the law by going to his boss you may win. Either way I am asking for clairification of the law from the game commision since I could not find anything about this on thier website. And I went through about twenty different laws (just a bunch of gobbldygook) and could find NOTHING that specifically said gliders. If you have the law numbers I would love to have them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" />

PRENOTE:
JUST A THOUGHT, BUT IT MAY BE BETTER TO CUT AND PASTE THESE links RATHER THEN CLICKING ON THEM. IF THE PGC HAS SEVERAL REFERALS TO THEIR SITE FROM THIS ONE, THEY MAY START TAKING A "SPECIAL INTEREST" IN glider centeral. I don't know for sure, but it's a thought.

I contacted the game commision myself and requested info as to where, specifically, it stated that gliders were illegal. I was reffered to chapter 137.1 http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/058/chapter137/chap137toc.html
where is states why you can't have them

I did, however, find information stating that you can get a permit if you have specific qualifications.

However, to obtain a permit, you must have 2 years handling experience.
Here's the link to all the permits: See section 147.241
http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/058/chapter147/chap147toc.html

Wow, isn't it nice to know that they've gotten all caught up on real crime! We must live in a pretty crime-free world if sugar gliders are all the government has to worry about!
