I'm almost positive that is NOT true. My mother uses it for cooking all the time. She keeps the unused portion in the freezer and uses it weeks later without any problems

If you put it in the fridge it is good for 3 months or so. I think the bottle says 3 months but that is them being conservative. Like anything older than 3 months in the fridge you may want to toss

Here's uhoh's post where she talked to the company that makes the Wheat Germ..... from what I understand you should discard the Wheat Germ that has not been refrigerated after 72 hours. uhoh's post on Wheat Germ Shelf life is a little bit different subject, but most items have a suggested retail sale date, otherwise known as the Expiration date. This date is not necessarily the shelflife date, but it usually means that this product could be defective after purchase or consumer's use after this date, if that makes sense.

Yes, it can become toxic if it is NOT refrigerated.

Ok thanks guys... my mealworms are outside of the fridge and I have them in a tiny amount of wheat germ so would it be toxic to the mealies?

The wheat germ becomes toxic after 72 hours of being at room temp. Change their bedding right away if the wheat germ has been out that long. IMO I wouldn`t think your mealies would be bad for your gliders being that many people were using wheat germ for a long time before discovering this. I also was using wheat germ and I haven`t heard of any gliders being harmed by this but I`d rather be safe than sorry by eliminating wheat germ all together from now on.

I spent 1 1/2 hours last night and picking out all the aliens and mealies from the previous bedding and put them in some dry baby oatmeal cereal and a small amount of floor until I can go to the store and get rolled oats and oat bran... what about wheat bran?

Thank you FemaleCheetah for asking these important questions! I was tired of being ripped off at the store ($2.50-3.50) for 50 mealies so I just ordered my first batch of 1000 from Grubco They have not arrived yet, but I have spent a good deal of time wondering what in the world I'm going to do with ALL THOSE MEALIES and taking care of them! It's almost like another pet itself! Where in my fridge is there to put all of them !?!?! LOL

1000 mealies can fit in a small container, mine did when they were in the fridge but now I decided that I would raise my own so that I wont have to spend $8-10 on mealies again and once I get my farm growing strong I think I will sell the mealies to the people on GC or ebay but that wont happen until I have a nice steady mealworm production.

Oh yeah I wanted to say that I only have two suggies and I have like 700 mealies left after 2 months LOL they will last you awhile! But if u have an unused cleaned out butter container that will hold 1000 mealies in the fridge or you could use a showbox or a 6 quart sterilite that can be found at walmart for like $2.

I know! With just one suggie, I figure I'll have worms for a year...and OMG if they start re-producing....who knows. I am really not looking forward to this ALIEN business and DEFINATELY not beetles That would just creep me out. sounds like a job for my boyfriend if you ask me! EWWWW!

Suggestion about seperating the aliens/beetles/mealies...I have several different sifters with differnt size holes. Window screen for one size to sift out old bedding. I do loose tons of tiny tiny baby mealies this way though. One that lets the smaller mealies through but not the rest. Then one with larger holes that let the mealies go through but not the aliens and beetles.
Also, I just use baby cereal for bedding. I don't use wheat germ or anything else with mine. Also, you don't need to add calcium to it until 24-48 hours before you are going to be feeding them to the gliders. Any time prior to that and it doesn't benefit the gliders but will cost you a bundle in calcium.

The Beetles will eat the mealworms and the pupae (aliens) and the melaworms will eat the pupae too..... Some separate and some do not, I separate them with tweezers and a sifter. However I wait til they get a little bit bigger so I can actually see them to save a few from going in the trash. Teresa, sounds like you got it going on!!
