My 15 month old granddaughter loves my suggies, leaves gifts in the cages. One she left slipped by me last week but has put me to thinking. She slipped a chicken drumstick bone in. I heard my male dragging something around the cage. It was the bone so retrieved it. All leftover meat, gristle was competely gone and the bone was completely hollow, every TRACE of marrow gone. The bone except for the ends was intact, no splinters or chew marks, just very clean and NO marrow left. They loved it. No after effects (watched closely). Could this be a source of nutrition for them? Anyone heard of this before? I wish I'd saved it to show pictures. I know they will do this in the wild. This bone was completely hollow, not a trace of marrow left in it, quite the accomplishment for 2 gliders in one night.

Wow, that's impressive! I have no clue wether or not it would be safe to let them have the bone... The only possible danger I can think of would be splintering... but are gliders strong enough to splinter the bone?
Maybe someone else has had a similar experience?

Idk- I'd be too scared of the end splintering and getting caught in their throats.

Interesting, I hope someone comes along with an answer. I would also worry about the splinters.
I know for humans it helps maintain a healthy cholesterol level, act as an Anti-inflammatory and a strong immune system.
Beef bone marrow has high cholesterol, I wonder if the marrow of a chicken bone is too fatty?

I watched them very closely after this. No change in behavior, bowel movements. The end of the bone is gristle and both were gone completely, edges very smooth, just totally hollow. There were no gnaw marks on the bone itself, looked at it under a magnifying glass. They ate all soft tissue and all marrow. I know they eat birds in the wild. I wish I'd saved that bone. I have no idea how they got all the marrow out but it looked like a hollow tube. A chicken drumstick is pretty big compared to the size of a full grown glider. Splenda is nursing 2 13 day old babies. I wonder if this is something she needed nutritionally. I looked at a lot of information sites and found nothing on this. One breeder I know told me he once had the bright idea of putting some button quail in his very large cage with 4 gliders in hopes they'd clean up food at the bottom of his cage. He said next day, no quail. What he did find was sleeping pouches lined with feathers, and bones in the same condition. Interesting!

I give my gliders baked chicken bones all the time.
Their favorite is when I get turkey neck bones, boil them, then give them to the gliders - meat and all. They eat a good deal of the bone, too.
The chicken bones are fine for them. I think it does give them extra nutrients.

I would be way too scared of the bones splintering and it ripping up their digestive tracks to even attempt giving them any sort of bird bone. :-(

I have given mine cooked chicken wings and also turkey wings. They do love them and completely strip the bones of every morsel of meat. The do love these but it is a rare treat around here. I do not think it would be good to feed too often.
Boy I love the idea of giving them the turkey neck. I threw them out after pulling off the meat to use in my turkey gravy! The gliders are going to feast next time I make turkey.

when you boil or bake the chicken do you leave the skin on or take off? i boil chicken alot for the gliders and make my own concoction but always take the skin off and throw out the bone.

What about cooked rotisserie chicken?
I buy rotisserie chicken from Sam's Club all the time. The chickens they use have no preservatives, and no hormones. Much Healthier than regular chicken that does have that stuff in it. Also when they put them out for sale they write the time the chicken came out of the oven, that way I always know I am buying one that just got pulled out.

I don't know why rotisserie chicken wouldn't be safe as there would be no spices or salt right next to the bone. They didn't get the whole drumstick, just the bone so what they ate were the shreds of meat left on and the bone marrow. The drumsticks we had that night were baked. Whoever changed the name of this topic, thank you. Don't know what I was thinking when I started it. I'd love to find a definitive answer to this as I can't tell you how much they had to love it. Wish I'd kept the bone so I could show people. It was hollow and looked polished. I don't often serve drumsticks but am tempted to give them a bone next time I do. I wouldn't give them any other bones as I think the smaller ones would or could splinter. A dog can shatter drumsticks but don't think a glider has the power in its jaws to do so.

Yeah, Carol thats what I was thinking too about the rotisserie chichken. Your not giving the whole thing with all the meat. So I would think it would be ok and it is cooked much healthier this way too.

The way I look at it is, they can moderate it themselves. If my females are feeling a little low on calcium, they have the opportunity to gnaw some bone (this is referring to the neck bones). To me, it is similar to giving a pinky mouse - but ... less gross!
I don't know what all is in bone marrow - but my gliders do love it when I give them thigh bones. I think that what makes chicken bones splintery is the way they are cooked. I wonder if I boiled the thigh bones, would they still be splintery? I'm gonna try it!

I have herd and read that any cooked bone could/can splinter. The only bones for sure that would not splinter are uncooked bones. So you will always want to be careful and watch while giving any cooked bones to your gliders. I plan on trying this myself but I will be watching when I do it and not something I would do all the time either.

I seriously doubt a sugar glider would have the strength in its jaws to splinter a thick bone. I'd never give them tiny ones, just drumsticks or thighbones. Looking forward to hearing back from people who try this to see if their guys loved it as much as mine did.

Just wondering cause that is a smaller cooked bone.

Maybe they do not but the first few times I try this I will be watching to make sure all goes well. It is always better to be safe than sorry. I also would only use the drumstick or thighbones.

Lets see some pictures of wings before and wings after, then we can get somewhere and make decisions on whether we will give the kiddos bones on occasion or not.

They pretty much stripped all the meat off and left the bones, even the small wing bones intact. I did not think to take pictures but will next time. They each grabbed a piece of the wings I broke into pieces and ran off to their favorite corner to munch though. They all looked very satisfied and happy with their prize find. I did make sure to have a piece for each glider so there was no arguing.

All 18 of mine have had chicken wings, boiled, baked and on one hot wing night occasion they even had fried wings. Never had a problem, they strip the meat and chirp away.
Wing night is my kiddos' favorite.
