I do not quite understand the recipe for the Darcy's sugar glider diet on Ensure. It reads: Ensure To one can of Light or Regular Ensure** (any flavor but chocolate) add 3/8 teaspoons of Calcium Carbonate (I use Ruger's, a human-grade pharmaceutical powder.) i should add 3/8 teaspoon of calcium carbonate to one large can of regular ensure? they didnt quite state the weight of the can. I pour in the calcium powder into the can n mix it? Then to the nightly ingredients for 1 glider: One tablespoon of Ensure mixture in a bowl. then sld i scoop up 1 tablespoon of the Ensure n calcium carbonate mixture into a bowl n mix it with water?) Im currently on the BML but cldnt manage to get all the ingredients for the BML so i planned to have a change.

Ensure comes in 8 oz bottles here. Just add the calcium, shake, and feed. It's probably the simplist diet out there. **Try to offer a variety of fruits and veggies to keep things interesting.

saltnsugar, Are you talking about powdered or liquid Ensure? As someone has already noted, the liquid comes in 8 oz. bottles ready for consumption and all you need to do is add the calcium. If you are talking about the powdered, you would need to mix the powder according to directions for 8 oz. then add the 3/8 tsp of calcium and mix. After that you would measure one tbls of the mixture for one feeding and refrigerate the rest.
Since you aren't in the US, I'm assuming that your country like some others only offer the powdered version of Ensure/Sustagen. Is that the case?

Isn't the human grade calcium a different ratio? Stronger?

I don't know about the ratio of the human grade calcium or whether it is stronger. Is that what the Rutgers(sp) is? Maybe someone who is familiar with it will come along and let us know.
What I (and some other people) use is the Jurrasical(sp), which I believe is a calcium for reptiles. Don't know if getting that would be a problem in Malaysia or not.

When using the liquid ensure, you do NOT add water. You just add the calcium and mix well. From what I have learned, the Darcy`s diet was designed to be used with Jurrasic-Cal, as Becky stated, it is for reptiles but it is still calcium that our gliders can have. I also have just learned that you can offer them as little as 1 teaspoon per glider, depending on their weight of the glider so they don`t get chubby .

I'm not really sure about the liquid ensure as i dun remember seeing them here but we have other brands like Dutch lady full cream milk sold in ready-to-drink packets. However, i shall survey all around to see. Most of our milk are sold powdered in tins. lemme also check if Jurrasic-Cal is available here... thks for every1's help!

saltnsugar, [:"red"]Ensure and Sustagen(sp)ARE NOT MILK PRODUCTS!!! [/] I wouldn't swear to this, but I don't think you are supposed to give gliders dairy products except for the occasional treat of some cheese or cottage cheese. Yogurt is the exception to that rule. Ensure and Sustagen are supplements for humans and has vitamins, minerals, etc. in them and are consumed by people who have dietary problems. If you are going to look for this particular product (Ensure or Sustagen), you probably need to look in the area in your store where health aids, vitamins, etc. are stocked, not in the grocery aisle where dairy products are stocked. Anyway, don't buy milk in a tin or powdered milk to use in the Darcy diet - you need the Ensure or Sustagen.

I feed Darcy's diet, and my glider LOVES it. I mix a can of Ensure (Iuse the Wal-Mart Brand) to 3/8 Jurrasical, which you can find at PetsMart or PetCo. At night, first I feed the Ensure mixture in a bowl and put out 1 tbs of Gerber baby chicken food and veggies. Once she's eaten a good portion of that, I'll give her the fruit. Otherwise, if I put the fruit out there with the rest of it, she would only eat the fruit. I keep the rest of the Ensure Mix. in a jar in my fridge. It's a very easy diet to follow. Good luck!

Hillary, I do agree with you that Darcy's is very easy diet to follow. The problem for saltnsugar is that she lives in Malaysia and it's difficult to find some of the products that are offered in the States. I don't know that they even have a PetSmart or PetCo over there. In her last post, she was talking about getting a [:"red"]MILK product in a tin[/] instead of the Ensure or Sustagen to use in the Darcy's. Not sure, but I believe Ensure in the European countries is called Sustagen and sometimes comes in a powdered form - not liquid. Just didn't want her to use the wrong thing.

Saltnsugar, Becky is right about the milk products. Please don`t give your suggies any milk products except for yogurt. I`m sure you could probably purchase the Jurrasic-cal online

The jurrasical or reptical all settle at the bottom of the ensure so I never used that. You can use TUMS tablets, those are also calcium supplements, and I asked the maker of the 'darcys diet' if it was ok, and the mg dosage of calcium carbonate. I believe I added a 1/4 of the tablet to the can of ensure, and shook it up and put into tablespoon portions into ice cube trays. The tums dissolves much better, and is also flavored. (make sure to not get the mint flavored ones)

I've checked out most stores and they do not sell the Ensure. However, ive seen Ensure in a can, they told me it was for adults or children above 2 yrs of age. Im not too sure if that was what was needed. We also have Sustagen here but in the form of milk powder for growing up children. Maybe if anyone cld show me a picture of how Ensure or sustagen looks like there? i cant seem to find how it looks like on the net either. We dun have Jurrasic-Cal here too.. thks for all the help every1!

Here's a link that shows what the bottles look like here-and they usually come in a 6 pack that is shrink wrapped. Sustagen is the same thing. Base the added calcium on 8 oz. (after being mixed with water) if you use the powdered. 3/8 tsp. Jurassical contains 1200 mg calcium according to the label. Ensure

Thks alot Xfilefan for the link on the Ensure. Doubtly, i never knew what the Ensure is supposed to look like which every1 is using for the recipe. we dun have the bottled Ensure here. We've only got powdered Ensure sold in tins. i've attached a link below on the type of ENSURE we have here in Malaysia. is it advisable to use it? http://www.abbott.com.my/p_medi_oral.html

I don't know why it wouldn't be OK to use. I know with the liquid formula, I've tried the vanilla, butter pecan & strawberry. My kids preferred the strawberry hands down (funny since they DON'T like strawberrys ), tho I know other gliders have preferred the vanilla. Let us know how it mixes up for you.

It looks like the same thing to me (before they changed their packaging to bottles a couple years ago-the cans of ready made here looked identical)...they probably send it there in powdered form because it will last longer-once mixed they do have a "use by" date, and once mixed for the powdered form, or opened for the ready made-will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator according to the company, then throw any leftovers away, or drink them. It's the same manufacturer, so it should be the same product. And to clarify the calcium, with the jurassical, each 1/8 tsp has 400 mg calcium in it (for a total of 1200 in the 3/8 tsp of that product recommended)...so if basing on mg, that would be the equivalent to go for. I hope this helps.
And just in case-any flavor except chocolate.
