I expected Amaya to give birth today (her and Tadashi mated on 4/7) and I heard some different noises coming from the pouch this morning. I left her alone so not to distrub her while getting the joey ip and then maybe 20 minutes later went to check on her.

I found the joey trying to works it's way into the pouch...only Yoshi (her 8 week oop joey) was lying on Amaya's belly and the tiny joey was positioned right on Yoshi's tummy where mom's pouch would be.

I didn't know what to do, the joey was still moving...so I took the joey off of Yoshi, held Amaya down and put the joey right at the opening of her pouch. I let Amaya try first and she licked around her pouch and pulled her pouch open, but only succeeded in pulling the joey farther from the pouch. So I held Amaya down again and put the joey back at the opening of the pouch. After ten minutes of holding her I just couldn't do it anymore so I let her go. She tried again for a little while, but just pulled him off.

Could I have waited longer to see if the joey made it in the pouch? When I let Amaya go the last time it had been more than a half hour since I had heard Amaya making noises and somewhere between 10-15 minutes from when I had first found the joey on Yoshi. What should I have done differently?

I was really hoping this joey would make it. I lost the last one that was born while Amaya was sick. Tadashi is getting neutered in two weeks...but I was hoping for one or two more little ones before then...

I don't know of anything different you could have done. I think the normal trip takes around 20 or 25 minutes. It sure makes me wonder how many of these little ones we lose without ever knowing it. If you hadn't been right there you may have never known. I'm so sorry for the loss of your little one.

Thank you

The morning was pretty traumatizing for both Amaya and me so I left her alone for much of yesterday (except for another mid-day snack). But last night I checked the sleeping pouch, cage, area around the cage, etc. and there is no sign of the baby at all. The last time the baby did not make it ip the baby was dropped to the bottom of the cage completely untouched. Even so I am pretty much assuming that she canabalized him/her.

I don't want to get your hopes up but Ruffles did not eat her own. I found one in her tail and one in the sleeping pouch. I do believe the third one made it. It may be that I just didn't leave her long enough to dispose of them herself. I did show her the bodies and she just licked them and made no effort to take care of business. If I were you I'd watch her. Maybe the little one did make it

Thank you

I'm just so afraid to get my hopes up as I know the chance of her getting that baby in there was so small. When she was out before and I had put the baby at the opening of the pouch then let her work towards getting it in there, not matter how hard she tried, she couldn't do it. But I decided to give it two weeks...and then I'll feel her. She was really good at hiding her last set from me for a while and I don't want to get my hopes up or shattered before I can be fairly certain of whether the joey made it ip.

And the same thing here Carrie. The last joey that did not make it ip was completely untouched at the bottom of the cage. And she made every effor this time to get the joey in...but if not, I already got my Yoshi and he's the most perfect thing one could ask for

I hope the third one made it for you
