I NEED A HUG
I lost my 5 year old male Joey..
I found him strangled in his pouch. I made sure that I had safe pouches, I check them, I cut all lose strings.. I triple check them..
I found him stangled in a fleece pouch, fleece!! His mate, Cloey loves to chew, I have to keep a close eye on her, she managed to chew through the inside linner of the pouch, he couldn't fit.. I can't stop crying! If only I could have did something.. I triple check everything, he got stuck, and managed to get a little piece of fleece around his I found her stuck inbetween the linners of the pouch I came running when she was barking different Louder than she has ever barked, by then it was too late, he was gone
What do other glider owners do when their beloved glider dies??
Please help, I am scared that his mate will be depressed, stop eating, they have been together for 4 years... what should I do..

Gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. Thankfully this has never happend to me, but I do have two rescues that were injured in pouches,
If you say his mate, the female that is left, is the chewer, then don't use pouches for her anymore/or anyone that is caged with her in the future. She has proven that this is a problem for her, use a nest box or some other type of container and just give her fleece blankets for softness/warmth.

As for how to deal with his loss, I can't help you. It will take time I am sure.

Give her lots more attention right now, and keep an eye on her. If she gets a lot of attention from you, she may be fine w/o a mate. If after a few week she is still depressed, you may want to think of getting her a friend.

So sorry again.

I'm so sorry for your loss. *huuuuuuug*
May I suggest a denim pouch? I know Krispifsu had one made from a pair of old jeans because she has a chewer. The denim has proved durable and her glider hasn't been able to chew it to shreds.
I don't know what to tell you as to how to burry your glider... I haven't been down that path yet. I think that if it were me, I'd have peggy make me one of her beautiful boxes and then burry him in it in a nice place in the backyard. Maybe plant some flowers around it.
*hug* I'm so sorry about your baby.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. It is never easy when your baby crosses over the bridge. Know that he loved you and he will be waiting to see you again.
As to Cloey, keep her with you. She is going to need your love and attention right now. Keep an eye on her to see if her behavior changes. When my Nicky lost his family, his attitude changed. He became very timid and clingy....didn't want to go more than 3 ft from me. It was only after I got him a buddy that he snapped out of it and became his normal outgoing self. You may want to look into getting a friend for her if she shows signs of depression.

I am so sorry about the loss of your little friend.

Suggestion: Double layered pouches.... even those made of fleese.... place inside of pouch, two pieces of cut fleese cut into 10 or 12 inch square like blankies. The glider then is able to snuggle inbetween the blankies and also will be able to cover their heads up for privacy. This discourages the need to dig inbetween the fabrics of double lined sleeping pouches.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I immidetly put her in a nest box with lots of fleece bits. I'll update you on her progress.
I am afarid of finding her a new mate, will she except him/her? Joey and Cloey had been together for so many years.
Thanks again

For now, I would keep her with you as much as possible so she gets the socialization she needs from you. I would wait a few months before introducing a new cage mate to her. When it comes time to do so, introducing a younger glider (2-4 months oop) would probably be better because her maternal instincts will kick in and help her to accept the glider better.

I recently lost my female glider . My male had been with her for 3 years. I immediatley started looking for a new mate for him (gliders arent easy to come by in England). I eventually found 2 females for him. I thought that he would struggle to accept them after being with one mate for so long but ohh no! Lyle pined to be with them. Now they are all happy in the same cage and Lyle is feeling like a teenager again! Or at least he is acting like one!

I am sure that if you do find another mate for her she will be fine. I suggest keeping her with you whenever yo can so she has something to snuggle up with. I also put cut up bits of fleece in with Lyle so that he had something to cuddle up in when he was alone.

I buried my little angel in the garden with lots of lavender plants around her.

I hope your little one will be ok and my sympathy is with you at this sad time. Its so hard but we never forget them!

I am so sorry. You truly did everything you could. Give her lots of love and attention. She needs you now as much as you need her.

Update on Cloey:

The first night was terrible, she didn't eat she was up way earlier than usuall. The other gliders were very quite too, they hardly ate either.
After a couple of days with her, she began eating more, and started to become less lathargic.. I have her cage right tight to my single nutured male.. I will try to introduce them later this week and we will see how it goes. I hope that it will work, she looks so lost with out another glider.

Thanks again for all the support. GC is a great network of people that will always be there for you when things get tough. I can't thank you enough.
