Partial Penis Amputation and Breeding #97206

My vet posed me with an interesting question today... One of my males has to have a partial penis amputation. My asked if I wanted him neutered at the same time... Well anyways, we got on to the topic of whether or not a male glider with an amputated penis would even be able to breed. I wasn't sure, so I thought I would post here...

Does anybody know if male gliders with a partially amputated penis can still breed?

Interesting question, Leyna. My guess it would depend upon where the amputation begins (where's Mikey with my science lecture on vein/vessel thingies?). Since they have the bifurcated penis, maybe they could... it would depend on the area and what "connections" are lost/damaged.

Responses should prove interesting!

Very interesting question <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

My Petrie had a partial amputation done where the penis 'forks' but he's in with anther male and was neutered at the same time so I can't answer with experience on whether they'll breed or not.

Definately looking forward to the reponses though...

if he asked if you wanted him neutered at the same time, wouldnt that mean he could still breed if you said no? haha im a wee bit confused here!

well, this is a strange question, lol.
I'd imagine that in a remote way that it is still possible for a glider with an amputated penis to father children. But I really don't think that it'd happen if both parts of the penis are amputated.

I'd be inclined to think that it wouldn't be something that would be all that gratifying for the glider to engage in, and without proper stimulus, certain things might not happen that are integral to the mating process. I guess it depends on where the stimulus occurs. My guess is that the shape/length of the apparatus serves a purpose, and without those pieces, success might not be achieved. Y'all get my drift without needing to be more graphic for the sake of the young ones. I'd say spare the poor guy the conflicted emotions between desire and what is physically possible and get him neutered.

I would agree with Ernie where it could be possible to a certain extent but not sure about how the he would react to it.

Oh, I am getting him neutered, I am planning on adding him to my non-breeding colony... Just, it was an interesting question and I was wondering if anybody knew the answer. And it seems like the answer is "It depends", lol.

Anybody else got some insite on this?

Leyna, the depends.. is really a huge depends thing, the first question i would have is why was his penis amputated, usually due to sm'ing, but i know there could be another reason. regarding the sm's, with as little as we now know, and with as much as we don't know. If the sm'ing was cause by a neurological disorder or a birth defect, the big question would be... would we really want to continue that breeding line. One of the things we have noticed is that in the procedures and treatments that are used with the sm's, that the neutering with the pompoms off does make a difference, now, there are many questions, theroys and ideas regarding the sm's, but what we are seeing is a reduction in the cloacal sm's themselves, this could be for many reasons, but neutering is highly suggested in those cases. Breeding generally isn't an option that is considered.

In regards to is it physcially possible for them to breed? or have viable joeys? that question is difficult to answer, there are gliders out there that don't breed with the penis intact.. but there is a common thread amoung gliders whose poms are still on, vs those that have them removed, (depending on the age of neuters) the ones with the poms still on, still exibit certain mating behaviors or they still have a small bald spot.

This got me thinking when I got bandit from angelinmypocket, he went through the treatments, and was neutered, but his poms were left on, in spite of all the efforts, he was still cycling through his sm'ing. when i got him, we neutered him again, removing his poms, and he hasn't sm'd at all since.

after speaking with many vets regarding the testerone levels and where it is produced, and stored etc... some say the removal of the poms wouldn't make a difference, others say, that it would. it all depended on how the flow of the testerone runs, and is stored.. that the adrenal gland also produces it.
that the removal of the sac itself, eliminates the storage of it. who really knows..not i.. i am stil loking for a lab that could use a smaller amount of blood for serium testing for the testerone levels.

Bacardi and Smegal both had necrotic (sp) tissue on their penis, most likely caused by an infected cut or scratch. They both had partial penis amputations. Smegal has been neutered for well over a year now, Bacardi was neutered when his penis was amputated. Bacardi never showed any signs of SM'ing, he just had some of his penis hanging out and it was discolored and inflamed... Smegal did chew his on his tail a little, most likely because of the pain in his penis. They are both doing well now.
