Ok, we're kind of at a stalemate. The girls are doing better than they were this weekened, (post "we're on the mend")but there's no improvement since yesterday morning, and they were sleeping on top of the pouch again this am (could have been because they couldn't get in after crawling ON it)and were too lethargic to crawl to the pouch hanging on the door. They're still eating, drinking, I haven't seen them throw up in 2 days and they no longer have the runs, though the stool is still very soft. I've been giving them their meds in OJ w/ extra calcium, and I didn't know about the pedialyte. How much do you give? And do I need to? I've also cleaned out the cage as much as I could and been changing their pouch every day, sometimes twice a day. We have a visit to the Feline and Exotic Animal Clinic in Clearwater Florida on Thursday evening. Has anyone taken their furbutts there? And what is the usual recovery time for these guys when they do get sick? Should I worry that they're still very lethargic, though they seem to be doing so much better than they were this weekend. I'm going to have blood and fecal tests done on Thursday as well, just to make sure. But is there anything else I should be doing? Like I said, we're kind of at a stalemate and I'm not sure if it's because they're just recovering and are still tired, or what. But they've been the same since yesterday morning...

Morrighann,
Stop the oj, it's very acidic and will cause diarrhea. As for the pedialyte, I would fill their water bottles with it, and push it as much as you can get them to drink. Otherwise, I would stop the oj immediately and just give the pedialyte, put their meds in the pedialyte and give it like you have the oj. I hope they continue to improve, I would watch for any small sign of decline, the smallest sign is probably actually a pretty big one!
I hope they recover soon and are back to their old selves soon! I would imagine recovery time would depend on how sick they were and how strong they were before they got sick, much like when we get sick. Do you have them on bml? It has all their required vitamins, minerals and actually has extra calcium in it.
Good Luck!

Sometimes it takes weeks for gliders to fully recover from diarreah from stress, bacteria and protozoa. One has to take one day at a time. Important element is to keep them well hydrated. Dehydration is secondary to the main problem and if the glider is not kept hydrated enough the glider will not survive.

Well, I got the pedialyte fruit flavor and replaced the water in their cage with it, and they seem to be drinking that. How long should I continue to give it to them? Dive seems to be doing better, though still not very energetic and she was always the spaz. Mama is still tires herself just getting out of the pouch to eat. She takes a few bites and then rests her head on the side of the dish for a minute, before eating again. I think I may call her Hoover instead. Every time I look in the cage, she's eating. The thing that still worries me is that there are no poopies in the bottom of the cage since this weekend. I know they're able to go, because when I take them out to give them their meds, they poop all over the blanket. It's a weird orange color too. We have one more day to go before we head off to the vet for a follow up and more tests...

Hmmm sorry I dont have much advice or suggestions for you...
About the pedialyte I give it until I can no longer see that their dehydrated... now on the other hand if they stay dehydrated or dont improve pretty much immediatly, back off to the vet we go. I dunno...maybe someone else may have better suggestions.
Hmmm, could the poopy be orange because of the meds or pedialyte?

Good luck...you guys are in my thoughts and prayers!
Please let us all know how the vet folow up goes!

We bumped the vet visit up one day, so we're heading out this afternoon after work to have them checked out. Mama has taken a turn for the worse and I think I can hear her wheezing a little. It's hard to tell cuz they're so tiny. I went home at lunch to pick them up and they're sitting under my desk in a box. Poor things can't get any rest, I keep peeking in every half hour to check on Mama. Diva I think is well on the way to being back to normal. She's almost perky again, if still not quite so energetic... I'll keep everyone posted...

Well, we went to the vet yesterday, and Mama crossed over while I was holding her about 5 min after we got there. I guess I should have been more specific when I told her to hold on till we could get to the vet... Should have told her she would start getting better once we got to the vet, but I guess she misunderstood me, and just held on till we got there. They both have some type of respiratory infection, but the vet doesn't know where it came from. She said repiratory problems are rare with these guys I guess. She said she also did find a parasite, but there were only 2 she could see, so that wasn't what killed her. I was giving her the right antibiotics, but she was being underdosed. I guess the ER vet I had taken Diva to didn't know how much to give her. Diva was being underdosed as well, so we've upped the dosage and added on 7 days. We're also treating her for the parasites, though her tests came back negative. The vet put Diva on Isomil formula as well for a while. Apparently, neither one of them is very healthy. Mama was 70 grams and Diva is 55. I asked her if I was doing anything wrong, and she said I was doing everything I was supposed to, but they both apparently had a bad start in life and it stunted their growth. Another reason for me to be [censored] at my ex and glad that he IS my ex. So now my problem is how to keep Diva happy and healthy. I really believe she's on the mend healthwise. She's becoming more active, and crabs at me ALL the time now. I'm beginning to think this may also be her way of talking to me, but I'm not sure. I think she's also very upset and missing Mama. They were VERY close. Well, she WAS her mother in actuality. And she doesn't like me very much because I pull her out of her nice warm pouch twice a day to dose her up with yucky tasting stuff. The vet has the name of a woman who takes in rescues. I think we'll work on bonding Diva a little more with me, and get her healthy, then maybe we'll see about getting her a playmate. My question is now, how do you fatten up a glider??????? I give her plenty of food. She gets the BML every night, and I alternate fruits and veggies every other night. She gets yogurt a couple times a week. But she never eats it all. I could see if I wasn't giving her enough, I could just start giving her more. But she has plenty, just doesn't eat it all. I'm going to start feeding her mealies every day, but I wonder if I should wait until she's better because the vet said sometimes they have bacteria in them as well. I'm completely lost and don't know what to do... And of course, I keep crying over Mama and I think Diva can tell I'm upset. I'm trying not to be for her, but it's hard...

I am so sorry about Mama, I was so hoping she'd make it. At least now, you know what is wrong with Diva and are treating it. Hopefully she will soon be strong and well and crabbing at full force!

Mealies will help put some weight on as well as some gliderade, they love it, but give it after she eats everything else or maybe as a treat after her meds. Or both. Avocado is a high fat food that can also add some weight. It's hard with these guys to know just what is good for them. I have one that I am working on adding some weight onto as well. I do mainly the mealies and avocado. She loves both! Hope this helps a little and again, I'm sorry for you losing Mama, you did all you knew to do, that's all anyone can do.

I think Diva is on the way to being her old self again. She's even hopping off me when I try to give her her meds, she's got so much more energy now. I'll try the avocado and the mealies. We have another appt in 7 days to be eighed in and see how she's doing. We thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Mama's body has a new home next to the tree in my backyard that we've nicknamed "grandpa" after my own and I'm sure he'll look out for her till we join them again. Or who knows, maybe she'll come back to me in another playmate for Diva. Wouldn't that be something? I'll keep you all posted on Diva's progress. Keep your fingers crossed for us...
