Here's a picture of a tunnel toy we have in our cage. It has string to hold it up and I'm wondering if it is safe to have that?

I wouldn't put it in my cage. Don't they chew on that cardboard ?

I have the same thing in my cage but I fixed it up a bit. I covered the inside and outside of it with fleece and then with the rope, I glued it down to the inside so they couldn't get tangled in it.
Check it often though for any dangers that could occur as with any toy or pouch.

They love hiding and sleeping it.

I used a toilet paper tube. I put 2 holes, close together at each end,and then threaded a bread twister through each 2 holes (2 twisters total). Then I tied it tight to the wire on the side of the cage. I loosely stuffed squares of toilet paper inside where I had hidden treats. My glider loves her hide and seek toy. She also loves to play with circle hoops that I cut off of toilet rolls. She will eventually chew'em apart (not eat'm), and I just cut new ones. She likes to take them in her sleeping bag. I'll peek inside and find her sleeping with them all. Best of all, these toys cost nothing!!

Another member recently posted about the paper rolls (toilet paper, paper towels etc..) She said her husband works at a plant where they make those and that the glue used for them is highly toxic to animals. Personally I wouldn't risk it. There are safe materials (such as the plastic hardware cloth) that can be used to make safe tunnel toys with.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.
