Hello! Is it true that female gliders show no outward signs of cycling? I have 2 year-old girls and have never noticed anything, but every few months or so one of them starts making a funny little bark psst psst psst sound all the time. The vet said it might be some sort of mating call. Any ideas? How often do they cycle?

They cycle monthly. There is no bleeding or anything like dogs, but they can act different. So this barking very well may be her acting different during her cycle. I would put a mark on the calendar when you see her behavior changing and see what the timing is. Is it monthly?

Only one of mine acts differently when in heat. She'll do pst pst hissy call & the snake tail dance. The others, never give any signs when they do.

the first time my Maggie was doing this,i freaked out & ran her to the vet.she started doing this several months after we had gotten her,& i thought she was dying,or something:=( i was so glad to find there was nothing wrong w/her!! smile
Mollie doesn't do this @ all. i always feel so sorry for Maggie, she sounds like she is in so much pain.

So, this is a heat sound? Now that I think about it, she has done it about every month for the past three months. Is it a mating thing, or are they actually in pain (do gliders get cramps??)

Not sure if they get cramps...i guess they could have a discomfort when they ovulate. I am sure most of the behavior is hormonal.

Gliders come into heat on an average of every 28 days. I've had them come into heat from 26 to 29 days. Like we human females, I think it depends on the glider. I don't know about cramps or discomfort. I never noticed any weight gain mid-cycle.
