I just noticed that one of my glider books says broccoli gives them a tummy ache. Has anyone tried broc and found they were happy with it? Because that's almost always in mixed veggies. Will carrot juice be a good replacement for the V8, if we need to be concerned about the tomatoe juice?

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings, Jackie:

Since Courtney has had a good result with the V8 juice, I think you would be best to stick with that. Since there is already a pretty good dose of carrots in Courtney's recipe, I wouldn't be adding any more. Seems to me I remember reading too many carrots(whatever that might mean) can be a problem as well.

I will be looking into posting some different versions of these mixes soon enough. I have a few that I have been testing out, to see if they are as big of a success as the original. But so far so good on all of them... no loose stools, still eating everything, etc.

Broccoli is a very gassy food... if given too much, yes a glider can have a stomach ache from all the excess gas in it's system. However if in a mix with a lot of other veggies, in small dosage, it should be fine; just like the tomato juice in my current mix (it's mixed in with so many other things, the actual concentration of it in each serving isn't that great).

Here's a little more on oxalic acid.

Thanks for that article Randy. I will probably be changing the amount of spinach and collard green in the mix to 1/2 a cup each, and replacing it with 1/2 a cup carrots and 1/2 a cup peas.

However I do have a thought, since spinich is high in calcium, but it produces acids that fight calcium... doesn't that just cancel it out? Or would the oxalic acid fight the calcium that is in the BML as well... I suspect so, but I'm just wondering...

I'm glad that you guys have more of a clue about the ratios these babies need than myself. This mix started out sounding as easy as the BML mix itself.. this is getting complicated...

A super good fruit to add for calcium would be papaya. You could even throw some protein and more calcium in with some yogurt.

Courtney, any idea how many cubes this makes? Using a 1/8 cup measure?

I feed frozen broccoli 1 night a week and haven't noticed any noxious fumes coming from SugarBaby's room. She absolutely LUUUUUUVS the broccoli heads! Thanks for the recipes but ******WARNING TO NEW MIXERS**** put the mix in icce cube trays! Otherwise you'll get a fruit brick that is IMPOSSIBLE to hack into. See the thread "question about fruit smoothies" fro the morbid details!

K...gosh, I know this makes life easier on us to blend away their meals, and no doubt it's healthy for our sugarbabies...but what about their missing the enjoyment and ability to hold food and chew. I guess I just know I wouldn't like to eat all or most of my food in soft form. Maybe I just like to eat too much They get such joy picking up their food and making those cute little noises while they are eating. No doubt, they love dinner time! I love watching them pick up their food and munch away.

Any thoughts? Do you just feed the soft version when you don't have time to prepare the fresh? I'm definitely going to mix some up and have on hand...it's a great idea. I feed BML in the morning and fresh stuff at night.

Thanks for sharing!

I have always done the smoothie thing.
I put it and the BML in the freezer and when I feed it at night I stick it in microwave for 20 seconds then scrape it out with a spoon. It makes it easier to serve.
I dice up fruits too and just break them apart and the bowls are clean in the morning. I also use baby food for like rice and veggies mis instead of fruit juice. And applesauce for thinning too. I think that the juices are too high in sugar. I also use a lot of yogart for thinning too.
The brown cow stuff that is not too sweet.

I know this is an old thread... but I wanted to address the question that Courtney had asked.

The high calcium in the spinach (or other veggie) is a bad combination with the oxalic acid. In a way they cancel each other out, because one binds to the other... but in a bad way, they form crystals that lodge in your glider's kidneys.

Here's a direct quote from the article Randy cited:
"CAN THEY DO DAMAGE? When fed in large amounts for periods of time, Yes. OXALIC ACID is a strong acid and in LARGE amounts can be fatal. OXALATES (remember they are formed from the Oxalic acids) can form little crystals that don't dissolve. These crystals have very sharp edges which can irritate the digestive organs (stomach and kidney)and lead to kidney stones."

So over a long period of time, it's potentially very dangerous.

So Toni, what would be a better way to prepare these slushies in your opinion with that knowledge? I am going to pick up the ingredients for them today so that my glider sitter will have an easier time with them next week but I don't want to cause them any damage because of it...

Traci, you can leave the spinach out entirely. The rest of the recipe should be fine! Or, just put a little bit in there. Maybe every 3rd batch or so. Mine weren't interested in spinach, frozen or fresh.

Thanks Chey. One of mine loves spinach so I will add it sparingly. I tried the mixes last night and aside from having made WAY too much. I learned from the fruit mix to cut the veggie mix at least in half.

When I got up this morning, all of the BML was gone, all of the veggie mix was gone and the fruit mix was only eaten a little bit. I really thought they would go for the sweet stuff first.

This is going to make is so easy for my sitter next week!!!

Thanks again!

Traci, Glad to hear it works for you! Most gliders, contrary to the "sugar" in their name, don't prefer sweet stuff. Mine will eat veggies over fruits every time!
Glad to hear life is easier! And I'm sure your sitter will appreciate it!

Traci, Courtney suggested "changing the amount of spinach and collard green in the mix to 1/2 a cup each, and replacing it with 1/2 a cup carrots and 1/2 a cup peas." It sounds like a good sub to me. I'd probably omit the collard greens all together, though, and replace it with carrots... that's just a personal preference.

Already did the 1/2 cup spinich and collard greens. Also had to replace the peaches with mango because they are out of season and all the frozen ones had something to preserve color in it. I will try it again tonight and hopefully the reaction will be as positive!!

Thanks.

Agreed Toni!

Also if you feel that you don't want to use spinach or collard greens at all... go ahead and substitute with another more common veggie (like carrots, peas or green beans).

Karin has been having great success with using 100% carrot juice in her mixes as opposed to V8 low sodium. If you can afford to buy the carrot juice (it's rather expensive)if your glider doesn't like the V8 go ahead and use it, I just wouldn't use as many actual carrots in the mix.

I believe I have mentioned before that if your glider absolutely hates a certain fruit or veggie... replace it with something they do like... but remember these mixes will allow you to throw in some things they normally wouldn't eat.

I also believe in variety... so I give my gliders REAL SOLID fruits and veggies AT LEAST 3 times a week. So they do get the stimulation they need.

I've been meaning to do an updated post... but time has escaped me recently. As soon as I get the chance I will post again with some new thoughts. However I'd like to add that I have reduced the amount of spinach and collard greens from the original recipe above... but my gliders are healthier than ever and are still cleaning their plates each night.

Courtney is right, the carrot juice is very expensive, so I use the baby carrot juice. It's sold in the little bottles, so waste is not a factor...and that's always a good thing .

That's a really good point, Courtney... having some solid foods to eat (and play with) is important.

I'm intending to make up a fruit and veggie mix as soon as I buy smaller ice cube trays.

I couldn't find the baby carrot juice myself. They only had carrot/apple juice so I went for the expensive stuff.

They seem to love the veggie one and have been eating that all every night but they barely touch the fruit one at all. When I get back from the holiday, I will give them their fruits the old fashioned way but for now this is really the way to go with my sitter to make it much easier on her. (Even though I have four pages of glider instructions already... lol)

[:"magenta"] yay! i am so happy courtney posted, and so happy cyndie bumped up! i would be interested to know if bourbon has any changes/modifications she would make to this recipe, and how she feels about the oxalate issue. i was just thinking of buying mixed frozen fruits/vegs, and blending before serving. that way, they cannot pick anything out, but they still get the variety they need. [/]

I removed them because if hard food is not good the seeds can't be any better.

This may be a bone-head question but I haven't tried the mix yet so... does having all their meal be kind of mushy make their bowels looser? I just know in prior posts I was warned that I needed to make sure they had fruits and veggies so that their potty was regular. All those that have been using it let me know. Thanks!
By the way, it seems like such a great idea, thanks!
