I decided to post these two recipes that I make for my gliders because I've made references to it in some of my posts, and people have been asking about them... so here they are.

The reason I started doing this is because I would offer 4 or 5 different fruits and veggies each night and the little buggers would only eat the things they liked and would leave the rest… so I’d end up throwing out a lot of fruits and veggies they didn’t care for as much as the other stuff. So it was a big waste of time and money, now with it all blended together, they can’t pick and choose; they eat EVERY LAST BIT of these mixes every night now.

Veggie Mix:

1 cup frozen corn
2 cups frozen carrots
2 cups frozen peas
1 cups frozen green beans
2 cup frozen spinach
1 cup frozen collard greens
About 4-6 cups of 100% vegetable juice*

*Add more or less juice to get the right consistency: Thick and chunky, but veggies are very well blended. It’s thick enough not to pour so you will have to spoon it into ice cube trays.

Fruit Mix

2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries)
1 cups peaches
1 cup watermelon
1 cup honeydew melon
1 cup cantaloupe
1 cup grapes
About 4-6 cups of 100% fruit juice (I use apple)*

*Add more or less juice to get the right consistency: Thick and smooth, much like sherbert. You will have to spoon it into the ice cube trays.

Feed one cube per 2 gliders 5 nights out of the week… for variety. The other 2 nights feed fruits and veggies as you would regularly. These mixes make about 2-3 ice cube trays worth of fruits or veggies.

You can also change the fruits and veggies in the mix if there is a particular fruit or veggie that your glider likes better or worse. But take advantage of throwing in a cup of veggies/fruits your glider would normally not eat, because they won’t know the difference when it’s all mixed up. For example, one cage of my gliders likes green beans, the other does, one cage likes peas, the other doesn’t…but when mixed together in the mix they can’t tell and eat it anyways.

Questions and suggestions are always welcome!

Thank you Courtney! I have wanted a list of just which fruits and veggies you were blending together. I love blending...it makes life so simple...for me and the gliders, plus lets me still serve those sugar snap peas as a treat...they love me for those!

This also makes is sooooo easy for a glider sitter!

Thanks Courtney,
I made your mix last week and it sure does make things easier. Plus they eat the stuff they normally turn their noses up at. Picky little stinkers.

Coupla times you mentioned V8 juice for the veggie mix...just wanted to add the LOW SALT one . (I got fussed at the store because I insisted it be low salt...Jim just kept ). Another note...I put these in side dishes, just because some of the juice *ran* and the kids don't like their food together .

Thanks for posting this Courtney! Not only does it make it easier some nights...my glider's prefer mushy stuff and they can't pick out the goodies.

Oops! Forgot to put in their about the Low Sodium V8 juice. Thanks Karin for catching that. Good tip on the side dish thing... I do the same thing, but didn't think of mentioning it.

Thanks Courtney!!

I can't wait to try this on my gliders!!! They won't hardly eat fruits...fresh or frozen so maybe they will go for this!

Could you use frozen brocolli instead of the greens??

Sure... you can customize it the way you want with your gliders favorites... the only thing I kept in mind with the veggie mix is not too heavy on the veggies that have a bad cal/phos ratio, like the corn. And if I did use corn, I added extra spinach which has a great cal/phos ratio.

Just think of my recipe above as a baseline. It's what personally works for me and my gliders.

My gliders lick it up... and for the veggie mix that's a little chunkier, they lick and then chew. Just like with BML. My gliders don't play with this food... they used to play with their whole fruits and veggies, but not these mixes for some reason. My gliders like it melted better than frozen... so I think melted is better, but it depends on your gliders.

Well the freezing thing with the RepCal is for the Suncoast diet, I don't see why you couldn't just add your RepCal and Vionate to the fruit or veggie mix. Actually that might even work out better than the apple juice cubes because the vitamins and calcium won't sink to the bottom of the fruit cubes. I'll have to ask Lisa about that.

Quick question, Courtney...
Does this stuff stink when thawed? I have frozen fruits before, and OMG did they stink as they thawed out, like something had died...(shudder) Not that I won't try it even if it does, esp. if they'll eat it, but was curious about it. Thanks for the recipes

I don't think it stinks at all. It smells like sherbert to me... or a fruit smoothie.

Hey, I might try that fruit smoothie myself (but not the veggie one ). Anyway, can we put this somewhere permanent? Because I think it's a great idea. I've printed it out and placed in my glider books, but I lose things.

Bonzai, glad to hear your gliders like them. I'd try to feed the BML a little bit before feeding the fruits and veggies then. Give them a chance to eat dinner before dessert.

I might be able to put it somewhere permanent, webpage or something. But till then it will be here in this forum, you'll just need to do a search for the title and it should bring it up (if it happens to get lost under other threads).

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings, Courtney:

With the exception of the spinach and collard greens, the veggies that you are using are very similar to the ones found in the standard "mixed vegetable" packs found in all grocery stores. According to Bourbon, her BML mix has plenty of Ca to balance the excess P in the vegetables. It shouldn't be necessary to add any extra high Ca veggies.

Spinach and collard greens are very high in oxalic acid which is generally mentioned as being bad for glider diets.

V8 juice has a fair amount of tomato juice which is quite acidic and suggested for gliders in only limited amounts.

Have you run your veggie mix recipe past Bourbon to get her comments??

Hello Randy!

I am aware that when feeding BML it isn't necessary to give high calcium veggies to make up for bad calcium veggies. Since it's already factored into the BML diet, that's one of the neat things about feeding BML, not having to worry about ratios! The MAIN reason those high calcium veggies were added into the mix was that my gliders really do like those two veggies, no other reason. However I also thought about other glider owners that do not feed BML when I decided to actually write down an actual recipe. Which in that case they would need a high cal. veggie or two to counteract the corn that is in there. Since I didn't make these specifically for the BML diet.

I have never heard of the oxalic acid issue... please post about that in another thread. I'm interested... as I haven't read about it before.

With the V8, since it is only a mixer (just enough added in order to help blend the veggies enough), there is a minimal amount of actual tomato juice in each serving, since there is also
Quote:

JUICES OF CARROTS, CELERY, BEETS, PARSLEY, LETTUCE, WATERCRESS, SPINACH

in the V8 juice.

I had thought the reason tomatoes were not to be fed regularly is that it causes loose stools if too much is eaten (because of the acid content)... I have been watching my gliders closely and there hasn't been one glider that has had loose stools since they have been eating it. I really think the other veggies that are in the mix counteract the acid content of the tomatoes. I've been using this mix for about 3 months and I have not seen any ill effects in my gliders, in fact, since they are eating more fruits and veggies than they used to... they are more energetic and active. If I had seen any ill effects, I would definately have not posted this thread and my gliders would be back on their regular fruits and veggies in no time flat!

No I haven't run my veggie mix by Bourbon, she reads GC plenty, if she saw anything that would harm a glider she'd voice her opinion. And Bourbon, if you do see anything that concerns you please let me know, whether in a post or in email.

Right now I am talking with Lisa at Suncoast about some things with these mixes... she will then be talking to her vet Dr. C. There MIGHT be a new solution to the apple juice cubes in the Suncoast diet.

Rupert really loved his late-afternoon berry-melon gliderita. That's a wonderful way to show my glider that I love him and make sure he's eating right at the same time. Thanks for the recipe.

But what about the V-8? Now what do I do with the rest of the bottle? I'm certainly not going to drink that stuff!

LOL I have to feed 5 gliders each night, so my V8 juice goes pretty quickly. However... I'm sure there is an expiration date on the V8 juice, it will be fine in the fridge until then. So as long as you use it before the expiration date and it's kept in the fridge you should be good to go!

I tried the low sodium V8, and the glider's were so-so about the mix. Then I tried with baby carrot juice, and o boy did they love it! Since the one pair are corn only eaters with the mixed veggies, I am extremely happy they like this!

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings, Courtney:

Oxalic acid is a material that interferes with the absorption of calcium. I don't know very much about it and can't really add much to what has already been posted. Check out the GC SEARCH and you should come up with a dozen or so posts that will give you some information. There used to be a chart in the GC Diet LINKS showing the oxalic acid content for common veggies. Don't know if it is still there???
