My sugar glider just recently started making cute chirping noises during the day. While it's cute, she never used to make noises during the day, so I'm a little worried. There has been a major change in her life: her partner died recently and I wonder if maybe she's having nightmares?

Other thing that's new: we have a forest fire nearby and I wonder if that's hurting her lungs? It's really smoky out and I'm keeping the windows closed, but I can't keep it all out.

I don't want to think of a third option, but I know I have to. I realize there could possibly be worse health problems than what I suggested above. Anyone have any ideas about that? I just took her to the vet less than a month ago and the vet said she's healthy.

Last, here's a video with the sound ramped up of her daytime noises so you know what I'm talking about:

Edit: We had a mold problem recently that I'm doing my best to clean up but it's a big concern. Anyone experienced with the effects of mold on sugar gliders?

My gliders always make noises during the day. Usually when moving around in the pouch. Sometimes it is just quiet sounds and chirps. Other times it is a 'get your foot out of my face' crab at a cage mate. I think gliders dream and probably make noises like a sleeping dog that makes quiet barking sounds when it looks like it is trying to run in its sleep.

The sounds are not unusual, but if you are worried a trip to the vet would help relieve the concern.

As for the smoke - I would move the cage to a central area of the house away from most windows if they do not seal well and keep the AC running to filter the air. I hope the fires are not close enough to be a danger for you.

It wouldn't be much of a concern if the noises were in response to something but they're seemingly at random, there isn't really anything I'm doing to trigger them.

Unfortunately I have a really small apartment and there's not really any place to put her far away from the windows. Luckily I live in town. It's a local forest fire causing all the smoke, but I don't think I'm in any danger at all being so far into town.

A trip to the vet probably isn't a bad idea, but after watching the video, looks like the pouch is moving while she is making noises. And at the very end I heard a sneeze sound which is how they spit in their hand to groom. If lost her mate recently, she could be lonely. Might want to watch for over grooming. ( bald spots), and find her a new friend.

I'm in the process of finding a new friend for her, just when one thing happened everything happened, and I've been worried about getting new ones just yet because of the mold, besides being very busy. She had a bald spot immediately after he died, which worried me, but it's actually filling in nicely now with hair.

The noises honestly wouldn't have worried me except this is a /change/ in her behavior as she used to do this during the day noises much less frequently.

Update on the smoke: I heard on the radio this morning that the smoke that's filling our valley is actually coming from fires in Idaho and Washington, and I live in Montana so the only danger the fires pose for me is bad air quality.
