Okay, now I'm getting paranoid again. I recently started giving Hiroshi and Keiko yogurt drops and papaya chunks as daily treats after their BML lunch. They prefer the yogurt drops, and after looking again at the ingredients, I can see why. Sugar is the first ingredient. It also has artificial flavors. The papaya chunks have artificial color. I know "in moderation" is the key, and I only feed anywhere between 2-5 yogurt drops a day (they might split a papaya chunk), but should I be worried? The site from the ASGS (http://www.glidersociety.com/nutrition/menu.htm#danger) puts canned foods on the "Foods to Watch" list because of the preservatives and sugar. I know these things aren't canned foods, but if high in sugar (listed as the first ingredient), does this warning apply: "Danger foods are another cause for concern. Even in small amounts, these foods could seriously harm or kill your gliders." ?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" /> If definitely okay in moderation, how many yogurt drops a day can I give? Or is that a week? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

I don't know what most people do, but I do NOT feed yogurt drops and only give dried fruits from our health food store that have no sugar or anything in them. I really need to start eating like I feed my gliders....

Man oh man. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I just ordered these from SunCoast, thinking they were safe (http://www.sugar-gliders.com/glider-treats.htm). And I know of at least a few others who do feed them... Are there other brands that ARE safe, if these indeed are not? Is anything with sugar as the first ingredient just a no-no (or maybe an occasional--once a month--treat)? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

I would have thought if Lisa is selling them, you don't have too much to worry about. I doubt she would sell anything to us that she wouldn't feed her own 'gliders. However.. I'd of thought these were a 'special' type.. low in sugar, no preservatives, etc. I could be wrong.
You could always email her and ask her about it?

I don't know the ingredients of Lisa's. I'd assume they are safe, although maybe just as an occasional treat?

I personally just buy from the health store b/c I know it's safe and I don't have to pay shipping.

I think that they are fine as an occasional treat. Lisa is careful in what she sells. You do want to watch your gliders as they eat the treat, though, because BMXgirl's glider choked on a small piece of yogurt drop and she had to do the heimlich to clear his airway.

I don't think that 2-5 yogurt drops counts as an occasional treat, though. When you consider what the same amount would be in proportion to you... that's at least 4-10 candy bars if not more. A little much, in my opinion... cut back on the sweets and offer grapes or BML in the middle of the day, instead. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What?! I shouldn't be eating 4-10 candy bars a day?! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" /> Okay, I'll cut back. They are small yogurt drops, but I can see where the volume adds up. Thanks, everyone. I figured Lisa wouldn't sell something horrible for our suggies, but it just made me nervous reading about sugar being so awful... I'm hoping Hiroshi will start liking worms and crickets like Keiko does, and I can offer those as treats to him as well after his BML lunch. I do offer the BML as the first snack, and I do watch as he eats his yogurt drops--it's too cute not enjoying him enjoying them. Thanks for the reminder, though, that they could choke on their snacks.

Like Shaz said, I highly doubt Lisa would sell something that would jeopardize a glider's health.
I bought the same yogurt drops and papaya chunks from Lisa, and my glider loves it.

So, okay, the vote is that they're safe (enough). How many and how often is an occasional treat? I know it's not healthy, but I have managed to choke down one candy bar a day... Is one yogurt drop every other day too much as a treat? What do you guys offer, and how often?

I give Khai both papaya and yogurt drops. On average she gets one drop and one peice of papaya the size of the small drop a day. I am using it as a tool to get her more accustomed to my hands in her pouch. I know that she loves them and if so many places sell them for these guys, they can't be that bad. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

i also give my gliders these same treats, from Lisa at Suncoast. I give them on average one yogurt drop and one papaya chunk each, a day. Sometimes 2 if I have to get them back in their pouch after play time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Thanks again, guys! One yogurt drop a day, max, it shall be. Poor Hiroshi. He sure does enjoy those! So does Keiko, but she also enjoys worms and crickets, so I can still make her happy with those treats.

The papaya is good for them, and I can't see one or even two yogurt drops a day being bad for them as long as they are eating their dinner like they need to. Once again, it's the "moderation" thoughts. Yogurt drops and dehydrated papaya are perfect for the glider out and about. They are easy to take with you and I was told that papaya aids their little digestive systems. I buy the large papayas and cut them up and freeze them.

What about the yogurt drops that you buy at Petsmart that are made for ferrets?? I just bought some this weekend, because I ran out of the ones from Suncoast. What ingredients should I look out for?

Thanks.

If you go to the SunCoast page (http://www.sugar-gliders.com/glider-treats.htm), they list the ingredients and you can compare to what you bought. Here's what they list:

Yogurt treats contain sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, whey, nonfat yogurt, titanium dioxide, lecithin, salt, and artificial flavor.  Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein min 17.7%, Crude Protein max 18.7%, Crude Fat min .2%, Crude Fiber max 1.8%, Moisture max 3.7%

Hi Katty!!

Hiroshi was getting yogurt drops before you got him so I'm sure that's why he wants them. But he would only eat one or maybe half of one a day but he was pretty little then. He was also eating worms and lovin' them so I don't know why he won't eat them now. Infact he would eat on the other end of Elvis' worm when he was eating one. I have offered worms to Jazze and Java on and off since I've had them and they won't eat them but Elvis did from the start and so did Hiroshi and Gracie loves them. They always keep us guessing!!!! LOL

The yogurt treats I give them are from the Petco and are called Yogies and it says on the front they are for hamsters, gerbils and rats. And it also says they can have 12 a day but I only give my guys 2 a day. Yogies are very tiny drops.

Looking forward to a visit soon!!

Hey, Stephanie! I know Hiroshi enjoyed both yogurt drops and worms at your place. I don't know why, but he now snubs his nose at worms and crickets (so far). I use the canned goodies (can't handle the live ones). Yes, looking forward to getting together--as soon as the gas crisis passes! (For those of you not in this area, we're suffering a supply-and-demand situation, and with gouging, some stations are charging up to $5.00 a gallon [if they have gas at all].)

Yes, some stations are closed, infact enough are closed to make us nervous. My hubby went last night to get gas and the lines were so long at the stations that were open that he couldn't wait(they were telling the people in line at least an hour wait). Then he went at 5:00 this morning and just when he got up there they ran out of gas. So it is a bit scary.

Katty...I do give them live worms so that's probably why he's being picky!! Don't worry about giving live ones, it took me a long time before I could do the live ones. After this gas mess is over we'll get together!!!!
