I was at the store in the health food section (don't ask me how I got there-ok-I made a wrong turn while looking for the chips), and I noticed something called, "textured vegetable protein". Does anyone know anything about this stuff? Would it be a good source of protein for my gliders?
Any input would be appreciated. Lisa

no i wouldnt give it to my gliders if u want to give protein use chicken baby food or turkey rather than tvp tvp can be harmful since tofu is no the best thing for gliders. in theyre native land they dont eat tvp but birds and chicken is a bird its best to stay with the closest to their natural diet.

Thank you both for replying. I am so torn, Karin, because I really love this avatar, but I should have one featuring both of my babies. I don't want to leave Max out. It is good that you replied Karin because it occured to me that I need some new pouches! Lisa

How funny this comes up! I recently became vegetarian and have been trying to do research on this "miracle food product". I have also just ordered two books on this. Here's some nutritional info I found:
Quote:
Serving Size: 1/4 cup dry (makes 1/2 cup wet) Calories: 80 CFF: 0 Sodium: 2mg Potassium: 594 mg Total carbohydrates: 7g Dietary fiber: 4g Sugars: 3g Protein: 12g Calcium: 8% RDA Iron: 15% RDA Magnesium: 18% RDA Phosphorous: 17% RDA

TVP has absolutely no flavor unless it is reconstituted with a bouillon or something similar. That's why it's a great meat-substitue in chili, stir fry, etc, that has alot of spices and taste. Keep in mind that there are reports that soy may not be the perfect food that many first thought it was. Here's just one example Risks of Soy? So for gliders, I would not trust it. I don't think they'd like it anyway unless you incorporated it into a glider-safe recipe of some sort. And in that case, I think they'd prefer the chicken or beef!

I have been vegetarian for years, but I wouldn't mess with nature. I eat a lot of junk anyway, so what's another little flaw in my diet for me to try to compensate for? But with my little charges, I take no risks. I use the chicken baby food in BML and chicken-apple or chicken-corn-squash baby food for a licky treat. Karen the Glider's Angel Lady told me that chicken breast (cooked, of course!) is also very good for them, but it's been so long since I dabbled with the stuff I am sure I would screw it up.

Thank you for all the input. I didn't feed any to the gliders because I wanted to ask here first. Now I won't do it.
I really appreciate the help. Lisa
