We constantly see posts telling us to not feed items containing salt to our gliders. It is my understanding that all mammels require salt in their diets and will go to great lengths to get it. Is there any basis for not wanting to feed gliders any food items containing salt? Is it actually good for the gliders to deprive them of all salt? Does anyone know what would be considered a normal salt level in the gliders diet? I am referring to just plain iodized table salt like we eat in people food.

Good Question Charlie....I believe last year this was brought up as well, something similar anyway when there were a lot noticing the extensive licking gliders were doing to their owners during summer months and sweaty people. If I am not mistaken, it was told than that nobody really knew what the appropriate sodium intake on a glider should be.

Good question....looking forward to some of the responses.

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

I don't believe there is anything salt free. My mother has a disorder where she can't have salt as it causes her to have vertigo and vomiting. Finding anything salt free is nearly impossible. I used to make her salt free bread. I know that the frozen mixed vegtables I use even have some salt.
I would think that excess salt would be as bad for animals as it is for humans. I know that with my heart condition I must watch my salt too, as it can cause edema. I think a tiny bit of anything probably won't hurt but everything in moderation is the key.

I can agree with the statement 'everything in moderation'. But salt is added to so many products, even the pet food companies add salt to their products. It is recomended that all livestock be given salt suppliments. So it makes me wonder who came up with the idea to target salt as a no no in the gliders diet and why.

You know, that's a good question. I occasionally give my guys a treat that has some salt (like a tiny piece of cheese), and don't worry about it. A body can't function without some salt, as far as I know...it is one of the necessary minerals that is required for the electrical communications that goes on between the cells. I wouldn't doubt, though, that with many people foods it would be very easy to overdose a glider on it considering the fact that a lot of foods can make up a person's daily allowance of salt with just one item, especially processed foods. Perhaps that's where the caution began (along with many people's penchant for giving their suggies little 'treats' they probably shouldn't have ). I'd think that a recommended daily intake amount would need to be based on a gliders weight..since they are so small it would probably be a very low number. Interesting topic, Charlie.
