I have seen several posts lately about "colored" gliders not being the "color" they are supposed to be, or changing color when their diets are changed.
In what way have you observed diets effecting a gliders color?
What color did the gliders start off with (on which diet) and what color did they change to when their diet was changed (and what diet did you change to)?

It's odd that there aren't any replies yet to this thread. I am hoping to get the two rescues I told you about and if I do, I'll let you know about their coloring. As of now they are being fed fruit and baby food. I'm going to see them tomorrow, so we'll see how they look.

I have two new rescues that have definitely changed color since i got them. They weren't on good diets when i got them, i dont know exactly what they were eating but now their eating fruits, veggies, bml, and their beloved insects. The male has partial HLP and the female was a beast when i first got them but they are the sweetest gliders i have. When i got them they were gray and now where their bellies were whitish they have gotten cinnamon areas but not completely. Not sure if this is do to diet change though?

I always have rescues come in on poor diets that have brown or cinnie colored fur, but after a consistent diet it changes to standard grey with a white belly.

All I know is that when Flip first came to us I just assumed she was a standard grey because her fur was kind of a deep, dull, greyish looking color, and since I'd never seen another glider up close like that I didn't really have anything to compare her to. But I remember that once she started letting me hold her and pet her I started noticing that her fur was really a deep dusty brown color with flecks of white and dark brown or black in it so that she looked like she was kind of grey from a distance.
When she first came to me she was eating those glider grub pellets and moldy apples, but now she eats BML and an assortment of fresh fruits and veggies and such. Since she came here her coloring has slowly become more noticably reddish-brown looking, and at this point I think that she looks very noticalby not grey at all.
I don't have enough experience with other gliders or glider owners to say whether or not other people have had this type of experience or not, but for me it was a lack of understanding that led me to believe that Flip was grey; I just thought that that's what all greys looked like! (Besides, she was originally bought at a home show, and I didn't figure that they'd sell a colored glider, or if they did they'd charge extra or something.)
Even with as much time as I've spent on this site, as well as others, looking around to find out more about gliders, I still only realized that she probably wasn't a standard grey about a month ago! (I hate to admit it, but it's true. I actually thought that all greys had a brown stripe and not a black one, and that they were just called greys because the rest of their fur was kind of in that greyish color range.) I don't know what makes gliders change in coloring, or how accurate any of us are in our original assesments of their color; all I do know is that I'm pretty sure I was wrong with my origional assesment. I think that these sorts of things can be really hard to figure out, especially if you haven't spent a lot of time around a lot of different colors of gliders, and that it's actually really easy to mix these two variations up even if you have some idea of what you're looking for as far as coloring goes.

I've maintained for a while that the diet affects the coat colour. I've had a number of rescue gliders that have come to me a browny colour, I've even had them almost orange. After being put on the diet I use for my other gliders the coat definately changes colour. I had a female recovering from HLP who was the browny colour, her ex owner visited her a couple of months after donating her to me and was stunned at the change, he came over when she was half brown and half grey. In fact, I'll have to see if I can get a photo - I have one going through a colour change at the minute!

Here's a pic of my standard grey, I know she is definately a standard grey. As you can see from the pic she is a reddy brown colour from half way down the back and grey on her shoulders, which is spreading down her body. She used to be a reddy brown colour all over until she started eating a certain part of the diet that she wouldn't eat before!

This must be the answer to my question on other post!! My Tinto(I got him last weekend) his entire body had a red or orange look. His tail is still definitely orange or strawberry blonde, but the rest of his fur is definitely grey now.And he has baldspots by his baldspots on his head. They are getting hair again!!

And when you compare the previous picture to the picture attached here of two of my yearlings that have been brought up and who's parents have been brought up on the diet i use the colour difference is undeniable.

I took in 6 rescues from the Katrina storm a few months ago. I don't know what diet they were on before the storm but they were moved around alot before coming to me. When I got them the girl was feeding veggies and fruits but no protein. She didn't even know to. She was only trying to take care of them until she found them homes. I am unsure of how long they were actually with her but they all look like strawberry blonde gliders when I got them. None looked gray at all. They had all been overgrooming realy bad. One had lost her foot and one had lost half her tail. Well after being on Bml with fruits, veggies, mealies within a month the hair was growing back in the overgroomed areas and they were all normal gray. with white tummies
diet plays a big role in the color of these gliders . It shows how important it is.

Gliders on a poor diet and expecially gliders on some of the dry pelleted diets will have the dirty yellow color. Their stomachs will be yellowish-brown, almost look stained. Many people mistake this for being a cinnamon. After their diets are corrected they will usually turn into the standard gray gliders.
Don't confuse the yellowish-brown color caused by a poor diet with a glider with liver problems. Quiet often it is easy to mistake one for the other. Usually if it is a problem with the liver the feet and nose will have a yellowish look. Charlie H
OK,I will definitely take note of that.So far,his coat is looking shiny grey now,but his tail is still a strawberry blonde..his tummy is white..
