...I think I've ever seen. After some thought, I decided to post this here. Bear with me, please. Saturday night I brought home two one year (or so) old girls, Myst and Lyah. So today is day 4 with us. They have an appetite that beats any 2 of our others (they were thin, and very overgrown nails). I know nothing of their history other than that they were returned to the breeder. Myst hasn't offered to bite at all. Lyah has nipped, but not hard. They have a brand new tent of their very own, and I thought I'd let them play in it tonight, since they seem to be adjusting well.
>>Well, neither one would come to me, so instead of stressing them by chasing them around the cage, I put the cage IN THE TENT with the door open. None of my other guys could resist that. I stayed outside to watch. It took Lyah 45 minutes of acting like she was being hurt after she finally worked up the courage to even investigate the door before she finally ventured out. She'd put her nose by the open door, and jump back like something got her. Another 30 minutes of climbing on the outside of the cage before she carefully climbed down to the floor and crept around investigating the toys. After 15 minutes, she was back IN the cage. Myst never came out, and carefully avoided the open door. Finally, we gently caught them and put them in the tent, and took the cage out.
>>After watching all of this, and how neither one apparently knows how to jump or glide, and act like they've never seen a vine or hanging toy with a bell (Lyah swatted it from the top of the cage with a hand and jumped away like it was coming after her), and seem to be learning how to hop right now like young joeys, I have come to the opinion that I don't think either one of these babies has ever spent much, if any, time out of their cage and have had little in the way of toys. And they were really afraid of coming out of the cage! This was the saddest thing!

~~So, I'm not sure quite how quickly to take things with them. I'd like them to be fairly comfortable with their environment before I try too much to make them comfortable with me. I've never had a glider that didn't know how to be a glider. Right now they're exploring the tent and seem to be having fun (or terrified, who knows?). Any suggestions on how to proceed with these two precious babies would be appreciated.

[:"magenta"]oh, gosh, jen. were these the two girls you mentioned in the pm ya sent me? i had no idea. i thought they were happy new joeys. they do sound like they have had very little out of cage time, and not much human interaction, either.

i really have no idea what you could do. i would guess...go at their pace. the problem is if you do that, they may NEVER come around.

good luck anyway, and please keep us posted on their progress. [/]

[:"green"]Jen,
First of all, I commend you for taking on these two precious girls. You obviously have a big heart .

I adopted a pair of gliders (Pika & Cricky) in January, 2003. I was told they were "about 3 years old". They were very shy, didn't know how to play, didn't know how to jump and were very similar to the girls you just adopted . I know they had a decent cage, but I don't think they were handled much at all . It turned out that they are both already quite old. Pika is probably about 10 years old now and Cricky is probably about 8 years old or so. It took a lot of patience and tenderness on my part for them to even let me hold them. I carried them with me in a bonding pouch (I made a special "fanny pack" that I kept them in) almost constantly during the daytime for the first 6 months after I got them. During the daytime, I would gently pet them & give them treats. Gradually, over a LOT of time, they stopped being afraid. Within the last 3 or 4 months, Cricky has FINALLY started to make small jumps - the furthest he will jump is about 2 feet . Pika still will not jump . Neither one of them will run in the wheel either They have tried a couple of times, but they get scared and get back out after only a couple of strides. I still have hopes for them though. They are totally bonded with my husband and me now and have the sweetest personalities imaginable. They will explore when out of the cage now (Pika actually went on her first exploration just a couple of evenings ago ).
I have attached a picture of them that I took about 6 months ago. As you can see, Pika is VERY timid...

Hopefully, since your girls are much younger, they will learn to live normal glider lives and the whole process will go much faster than what I've experienced...
I will be praying for them & for you...

I've had my little girl almost a year now and I still have never seen her "play". I bought her a little toy boat that she could climb in and around -- vines -- balls -- hangy toys -- she just won't play. She runs like crazy in her wheel. I still can't even hold her. She'll come up to me and I can hold my hand up to her but she will not let me hold her at all. She no longer bites and crabs at me (unless I try to hold her). I found out that she hadn't been held in two years when I got her. So maybe she'll never be cuddly and playful. She has a darling personality and I'll never get rid of her. Hopefully there will come a day when I can get a couple that act like the gliders I hear about.

Pika and Cricket are adorable, and lucky to have you! I just can't imagine someone having these two and never playing with them-especially since they don't even bite. Lyah's nips are hardly what I'd call going after blood (Our Gimli was out for blood when we brought him home), and not hard enough to even hurt. Once I got them out of the cage, they actually hopped around and batted the balls and things, and Lyah seems to be trying to learn to climb the tent seams. Myst made a couple tries to jump up to the front window but didn't make it-can't wait for the day she does! They kind of ran, and then would stop and cower down before getting up the courage to try again. Anyway, they'll get out of cage time here, and hopefully learn that nothing will get them and it's okay to leave the cage. Let me see if I can attach pics.

First one is of Myst~she is missing the ends of 4 fingers.

I have 3 gliders that have come from others homes and I worried myself sick (I think everyone can remember when I was here asking a million questions a day - LOL). They are coming around very nicely (only one won't come onto my hand ). I talk to them thru the day when I hear them stiring and at night. I don't usually use treats on the girls but booger gets treats (the girls seem intimidated by treats - go figure!) But they are/did quickly worm their way into my heart and everyone elses too . Best of luck!

Well. This is very sad. I am so sorry for you and your gliders; nothing hurts my heart more than seeing helpless animals treated bad. I am glad you are here loving them. But anyway here is something that "accidentally" helped me. When I got oscar my boy my girl was a few months older. She was real tame and he was not...he was nice but crabbed at me sooo much. Well to make it short syd could smell him and tried so hard to find him, and one night he snuck out of his cage and i found him on hers, so I decided to just put them together. Well needless to say he sortof bonded to her first and me second. But he was so young he could not jump or do much and he was too scared, but after bonding to her he followed her everywhere. So she sortof showed him how to jump, play, etc. So maybe if you pair the shy ones up with some of the others they can bond and then they will play. Oscar did bond to me though, it just took longer but now hes incredibly sweet and he can outjump my female now by a long shot. So maybe being with some other gliders who love to play will kinda "teach" them how.
I really hope it works out. Its real nice of you to spend your time caring for them like that.

My eventual intent is to try and see if they will be cagemates for Riker and Gimli (both single neutered males tearing their hair out, literally). They'll still have a cage mate, and be right 'next door' to each other if it works. However, I still have at least a 30 day quarantine to get through first, then the intro process. Gim is about 2 1/2 years, and Riker 22 months, so intros will take awhile, with 4 older gliders involved. Myst is definitely NOT an alpha female, so she just might work with Riker, and I think Gimli and Lyah will do good-they already hiss and bark across the room at each other! These little girls so far will only take treats if I put them in the cage and step back, and are just figuring out what mealworms are. Myst will pop her head out whenever I go to the cage and just look at me as long as I'm there. Lyah hides and crabs. I just want the best life for them, and haven't dealth with something like this before. I don't want to inadvertently scare them into not trusting me at all, which seems like it would be easy to do with this pair. Thanks for all the advice so far, and I'll consider all of it!

I don't have anything helpful to say, I just hope that everything goes well for you. I know that it will, patience is the key.
