[:"green"]I know it may sound strange, but I think I have a claustraphobic glider... I am wondering if anyone else has had experience with something similar with one of their gliders...
Here's the deal...
I adopted Carina from a nearby breeder in October, 2004 when she was 9 weeks o.o.p. Carina's a real beauty and I had met her for pre-purchase bonding sessions. She was a bit crabby but so adorable. I have a lot of experience with gliders and knew that I should be able to bond with her over time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />... I put her in a bonding pouch to bring home and by the time I got home, she was slightly damp - I thought it was urine & cleaned her off with a moist towelette (she didn't like it but tolerated it). For the first few days, she crabbed at me every time I came near her <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" />. I didn't let it phase me and I gave her a few days to get used to her new home. The next time I put her in a bonding pouch, she crabbed intermittently for about half an hour. When I took her out, she was again wet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. Once again, I cleaned her off and put her back in her cage.
I had adopted her to be a mate for my beloved Coobah (Carina is Australian Aboriginal for "bride".) He fell in love with her almost immediately and is still star-struck to this day <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />. She did eventually bond with me, but it took a lot of patience and perseverence. I also had to not use a bonding pouch with her. I simply held her in an open-topped pouch and gently pet her through the opening until she got used to me. Now, she only crabs at me when first taking her out of the cage in an irritated sort of way, as if to say, "Hey! I'm trying to sleep here..." Once I'm holding her, she's fine...
unless... I put her in a bonding pouch. As soon as she's in a closed pouch, she starts to crab incessantly and within a half hour she's soaking wet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" />. It took me awhile to discover that she was not urinating on herself. The breakthrough discovery came when I went to put her back in her cage one day... She jumped from my hands to her cage and immediately threw up <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />. Consequently, I have rarely tried to put her in the bonding pouch (a total of half a dozen times to date). Just yesterday, I thought I'd try one last time. I put her & Coobah in the pouch because I thought that might help her relax some... to no avail. Although she didn't crab as much, when I opened the pouch, she and Coobah were both wet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />. Poor little Coobah just looked at me as if to say, "What happened? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />"
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so, did you find a "cure" for it? I really love Carina but I can't take her anywhere with me because I can't put her in a closed pouch. Travelling is okay because I put her in her travel cage & she's fine with that, but to bring her out and about with me locally is impossible <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/needhug.gif" alt="" />
Please help if you can!

I experienced this with my first glider baby, My pairs firstborn. He did the same exact thing and no matter what treats, love or whatever I gave him would make him enjoy it. I tried from the time he came oop and as soon as he was about 6 weeks oop he started going crazy if I put him in a pouch. It nearly broke my heart to know I couldn't have him as a bra baby. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" /> He was a perfect angel otherwise, but I just couldn't put him in a closed pouch.
He died recently though, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gliderangel.gif" alt="" /> and he never got over the problem.... So I'm really no help...at least your not the only one.

So sorry you have not gotten any replies to your concern yet. At the time you originally posted, many members were probably in bed and others not having ever dealt with a similar situation, probably didnt know what to say or have anything to add to what you are going through.

I do have one glider, Spike, who does not like bonding pouches at all. He will do whatever he can to get out of them. The only bonding pouch I literally have ever had any luck with him in, and one that he is comfortable in, is the sissy pouch ( Sweet and Sour Sugar Gliders ). Im not sure if it is the way that it does not move all around that makes him at ease or if it is the rear window which he can not only smell me better but also have some sort of visual as to what is going on and where he is.

I would have to be very concerned however, if he were throwing up. I do not recall that being a problem in most gliders that do not like being in a bonding pouch.
I would have to recommend you to take your girl in to have her checked out by a vet just to be safe.

Once again sorry about the delayed response and hope this is of some help to you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

Have you ever tried a pouch with a window?

[:"green"]I didn't think of a sissy pouch or a pouch with a window, before... those are great ideas! I'm glad she's not the only claustrophobic glider, anyway...
Thanks for the advice. I think I will make an appointment for her with my vet, just to be safe...

This is not uncommon for a glider that has been locked in a small pouch for taming purposes, such as taping them in your pocket etc.. some have been popped/smacked.. some have been squished. the close confinements can really traumatize them, on the other end of the coin, most gliders are clustrophobic to a point, they still must feel they can come and go as they please., but with yours I would say that it was a bonding technique that has traumatized her from the past somewhere.

okay some side notes, I surely wished you would have quarantine them before putting them together, with her throwing up, she may be sick, and if so, she may pass it on to the male. it is too late now, but the first sign of illness please get them both to the vet.

also in helping you with your problem, you may want to take a "long sleeved cover shirt" tuck it in, button it all the way up, use that as an oversized pouch, just place or pin their bonding pouch to the inside left from of the shirt. do not allow them to go past your shoulders, or out your neck.. but let them have more room to explore on your body, but yet confined under the shirt.

I will tell you the first few days, they may go to the top of your back, between your shoulderblades, because they know for some reason you can't get them there, then they wioll move to the small of your back, and be there for a couple of days, soon, they will move around to the front and cozy in.. just be patient..
