I think she was getting a lot of questions over confusion on how to feed it, so she made it clearer and more obvious so we can all understand what she is talking about with the diet.

Well it still confuses me!

Her directions now read

"I would use at least 1/2 cup of each fresh fruit and vegetable.
Now, in addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables, add 3/4 cups of mixed frozen veggies to each batch, and 3/4 cup of chopped up mixed frozen fruit."

That is 2 1/2 cups fruits and veggies per bowl!

The the serving portion, which is now much better defined from the old "break off a piece" instruction, seems to be a very small portion given the quantity of vegetables and fruits in the combination.

Most diets call for 1 Tbs Fruit and 1 Tbs Vegetables plus the chosen diet for protein.

The new serving direction of 1 1/2 cube per glider means each glider gets a maximum of 3/4 TBS Fruit and 3/4 Vegetable - if you do not count the volume of the applesauce, chicken or egg and other ingredients that are included. So if the cube were to contain an equal amount of the basic diet ingredients, fruits and veggies the each glider gets 1/2 TBS basic diet, 1/2 TBS fruit, 1/2 veggie per night. That to me seems to be half the amount of food fed per night when using other diets.

This also makes such a HUGE amount of food that those who have 4 gliders or less would be feeding the same batches for a very long time. I would expect some of the food would freezer burn long before being used up for a small colony.

I hope Priscilla will clarify some of this further for us.

I'm the one who rewrote the recipe as it was too confusing to many people.

Please let us know when you make it if there are any changes you feel need to be changed.

Hi Tyler! ^^

LoL, The only thing that confuses me on it now, is:

"To bowl 1 add in 2 fresh chopped fruits, and 2 fresh chopped vegetables.

To bowl 2 add in 2 different fresh chopped fruits, and 2 different fresh chopped vegetables.

To bowl 3 add in 2 different fresh chopped fruits, and 2 different fresh chopped vegetables.

To bowl 4 add in 2 different fresh chopped fruits, and 2 different fresh chopped vegetables."

Is it now just 2 pieces of fruit and 2 types of veggies?
A mango and a pear?
Like so much of broccoli and so much of peas?
Is it a different fruit and veggie for each bowl?

I know it was mixed veggies before and the same for fruits.

Candy, I make a relish looking mix of the veggies and same for the fruit with my food processor. It goes into the cubes MUCH easier. I do the same with my chicken. LoL! I've found that they eat it better this way too.

Hi guys,
I just spoke to Priscilla on the phone about her diet, and funny that you should mention this, but as a newbie I had the same dicussion (regarding some confusion about the diet)
about a week or so ago with her. wink

She updated the recipe for several reasons.... one being that there were several versions out there, and some confusion. The second reason is that she was trying to find a format that most of her clients would like and understand.

As a newbie, I currently have two babies to feed and I made HALF of the most recently updated diet menu (on her site) and it was enough for probably several weeks or more of food for only two gliders. However, I am going to be getting more gliders at the end of the month, so I wasn't too worried.

For those of you that have only two or three gliders, you would only want to make a FOURTH of the recipe and this would give you probably a couple of weeks worth of food depending on how much you feed them.
After speaking to her on several occasions (she is wonderful to talk to, by the way, and is very patient with newbie questions) I came to realize that the recipe is geared to a larger group of gliders (say 10-15) and that she expected that people would customize it to their own number of gliders.

Also, in regards to the measurments of fruit and vegetables, there is not an exact science to it, and she makes such a large quantity for all her gliders that the amounts listed in the recipe is from her memory and experience and is the best estimate of what she knows works. I think the most important thing to remember from what she told me is "for an exotic animal, the best diet is a varied diet". This makes sense if you think about them in the wild. They wouldn't necessarily find the exact amounts of fruit or veggies or protein in the wild.
I don't think the exactness of the fruit and vegetables are the main focus (from my understanding of our conversation--she can correct me if I am wrong) much like the other diets that might give you a specific percentage of each.
Not that it isn't important to make sure the ratios of calcium vs phosphorus are there or that there is adequate protein etc, however that is why she has the vitamins and cereal and monkey biscuits that she has....it helps to support the necessary diet among gliders without being overly specific about exact amounts.

I know that some of us want the exact thing to feed a glider....but to some degree we have to trust our instinct and that of the glider. Our job is to give them healthy choices and that they will pick out the things that their body needs. Exotic animals are built with a radar that instintively tells them what nutrients they need. They must be that way in the wild to survive.
As long as we limit the choices to the helathy diet...they will be fine and whether they actually eat 1/2 or 3/4 of a tablespoon of veggies and fruits in any given meal is not as important as giving a variety along with the cereal and vitamins based on healthy practices like Priscilla's diet menu.

I hope I have helped to clarify and explain what I have gotten from conversations with Priscilla on this very subject. ;-)

Thanks!
Jenn

When I make it here I do 4 bowls. I try to get 2 different FRESH fruits and 2 different FRESH Veggies for each bowl. If I can't find that much then I seperate out bananas or oranges, papaya, w/e you get into bowls 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 that way it alternates and isn't the same thing.
Does that make sense Ashley?

If you only have two gliders then cut the recipe down and use just 2 24 oz applesauce instead of the large containers.

Why does she not say how much oatmeal to add? Is it the same as before?
The "T" for wheat germ stands for tablespoon right?
The orange juice is the can of frozen concentrate that says calcium fortified, right?
Did someone come back and clarify chattrbabe's question (mine as well) about whether it's actually a "piece" of fruit (don't see how since this varies soooo much) or some estimate?

I only have 2 gliders as well, but it does look as though some things other than just quantity was changed.

Lastly, I would add something about oxalates as unfortunately, many of the best veggies with regards to CA/PH ratios are the worst in terms of high oxalates (which affects the actual absorption.)

The "T" for wheat germ stands for tablespoon right? yes, big T = tablespoon, little t = teaspoon
The orange juice is the can of frozen concentrate that says calcium fortified, right? correct
Did someone come back and clarify chattrbabe's question (mine as well) about whether it's actually a "piece" of fruit (don't see how since this varies soooo much) or some estimate? yes, a whole piece of fruit or vegetable

Hope I've answered some of your questions

Tyler, Would it be possible for you to include a list of the specific fruits and veggies (both fresh and frozen) that is used with the diet on the web site? I have seen many questions from new owners who are confused as to what fruits/veggies that are served. I think this would help those who are having a difficult time with understanding and figuring the ratios.
Thank you!

Have you ever seen a papaya? Lol. They're HUGE. Whereas other fruits are tiny. Tyler, what constitutes a "piece" of a fruit or vegetable? Obviously not the whole fruit or veggie.

Deanna, on Priscilla's web page it says "I would use at least 1/2 cup of each fresh fruit and vegetable."

That is right Kim I would use 1/2 cup of fresh fruits. You can chop the rest of a papaya up in chunks and feed to them as treats/ extra fruit. My guys like to have things like that.

Yes Linda I will be doing that!

I will also be measuring how much I use of each ingredient exactly and break it down into a portion for 5 gliders to that will last 1 month.

Tyler - I am confused by the fact that the Applesauce is doubled and both the fruit and vegetable content per 'bowl' is increased by 1/2 cup each (now in addition to the regular 3/4 cup of each frozen fruit & frozen vegetable) but the Orange Juice, Wheatgerm and I think the Yogurt all remain the same. The amount of egg or chicken added to each bowl is also the same.

This REDUCES the amount of protein in the servings given to each glider because it is diluted by the additional applesauce and additional fruits and vegetables.
