My husband and I are raising a mealworm farm right now. Mealworms eating each other is normal. However, when the mealworms morph into pupae, the pupae need to be weeded out and put into another container. The pupae eventually turn into beetles which in turn lay eggs. When we see the tiny baby mealworms, we move the beetles into a diffeent container. We use several containers for our mealworm farm.
I hope this helps.

Just do as Pix and set you a few containers up. I find that 4 containers are truly necessary, and you eventually will add one or two more for optimum productivity. 1. Larva 2. Pupae 3. Beetle 4. Mealie After you set your other containers up, When the larvae turn to pupae, tweezer them to the pupae container. When the pupae turn to beetles, tweezer them to your beetle container, just as Pix mentioned. Then you can either; 1. When you see your first mealworm in that container, set up one more beetle container and pluck all the beetles into that new beetle container with brand new bedding, leaving the other beetle bedding alone. The babies, as you probable know are in the mix, that will become your 1st generation mealworms, some you won't even see for a while. OR 2. Transfer the beetles to a new container with new bedding after about 3 to 4 weeks. This will keep the beetles from eating the baby mealies for yet even more productivity.
SINCE YOU ALREADY HAVE YOURS GOING THOUGH...... What I would do if I were you, first is stop using fruit, and potatoes, both induces mold growth, stick with carrots or lettuce, which are farily watery veggies, just think, do you want your mealworms to eat potatoes? (Sorry just trying to help you out) Then I would just transfer the beetles to a new container with new bedding, and separate all the pupaes to a conatiner alone, then set up one more for a larvae container, pick you about 50 or so good sized mealworms for this and check for pupaes every couple to three days, and your farm will move along at a much faster production for you.

Hey Ann honey!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" /> The larvae is just the same as the mealie. The mealies will go through 9 stages of molting (minimum) before changing to a pupae. (And they're all larvae's but I like to separate the larger ones to the larvae container, that way the very next stage or two are molting into pupas). That way I'm not feeding the larvae's to the suggies, but the feeder ones.... In reference to your beetle container question; I'd say that was a bit much for a shoe box size. Your mealworms hatchlings will be massive with that many beetles, you can choose to separate that container in half and leave all together and see what your mealworm baby count is. I found that having too many mealies in one container introduces more losses for you. Of course, no one is saying you HAVE to separate, you should have plenty of all stages to feed for quite a while. I just like mine a little organized.... and I also found through experience that I had more production with separation. If they start eating too many, you now know you have another option with separating them......... Here's another post on farming too: Mealworm Post
