I have had my oldest sugar glider for 8 years now and I have noticed that her fur has thinned a bit over the last two years, is this normal? She has gone in for vet visits and the vet just thinks its her age because she is very healthy. I have never really heard anyone talk about their fur thinning, but I do remember a post long ago about some gliders having cracks in their fur. She isn't going bold or anything, her fur just isn't as thick as it used to be.

my 9 year old has been thinning for the past two years too. I;ve also noticed weight loss but the vet says he is healthy too. I think it may be normal.

My 16 year old, Aspen, has never been quite as fluffy as my other gliders (I got her 9 years ago when she was 8 years old). She has also been lighter in color (I don't know if that is because she was an older glider when I got her or if that long ago someone didn't realize she was a platinum).

I can tell that she is thinning a little bit and her fur is not as bright and shiny, but she is still beautiful to me and runs in her wheel every night. My vet can't believe she is as healthy as she is.

I wouldn't be too worried about it.

My 10 year old still has a very thick, soft coat but the hair on end half of his tail has thinned considerably. It was never a fluffy tail like some of my gliders, but it certainly used to have more hair than it does now. His colors have definatly faded, his black marks have turned brown. I have not noticed any weight loss, in fact it seems to be the opposite with him. His appetite is just as good yet he's less active, so...

As far as the weight loss in the 9 year old, has your vet checked his mouth lately? One of the most common problems my vet sees in the older gliders is pereodontal disease, which could make eating a bit painful.

Yes my vet has checked his mouth but it has been a while. I might take him back and get that checked out. He seems to run a lot more in his wheel than he use too.

I have an 8 1/2 yr old pair. My girl's fur is thin, and she is a lighter creamy color than she was when she was young. But that could all be for many health reasons. My boy's fur looks just the same as always, he still has dark coloration and his fur has not appeared any thinner. dunno

My 8 year old girl has a thin tail as well as one of my 5 year old boys (his is just starting) His twin brothers tail is not thinning yet. These were all gliders on a bad diet. The 5 year olds were rescues and the 8 year old was a rehome. I got them all in Dec. of 06.

Old timers math at work here but...

9+8=17

That is a remarkable age. Are you sure she was 8 when you got her?

My 11 and 13 yr olds are still going strong. Both just as gorgous as ever though I've notices they have both lightened in coloring some.

When my Pika & Cricky were still alive, their tails were thinner than the rest of my gliders' tails. They were about 9 years old when I got them and their tails were thin the entire time, but got much thinner over the 4 years they were with me. They were approx. 13 when they passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Their color had faded, too, during the four years I had them - wherever they were originally black (stripes & ears), it faded considerably, as can be seen in these pictures (right click on any of the pictures, then click [View Image] to see larger versions):

My ten year old guy has nice thick fur all over. His ear color has gone from black to more of a pink though.

Pika & Cricky look just like my little girl. I wonder if it has something to do with genetics?

Here is another question. For everyone who said their gliders fur has thinned over the years, where your gliders standard greys? And for those who said they did not, where they a different color?

StitchsMom, your ten year old looks amazing! He looks young! I would have never guessed him to be ten! smile

Yes, Pika & Cricky were both Classic Greys. I also have Darwin who is almost 11 now. He was 8 when I got him. His tail was partially amputated a couple of years ago, but the 3" nub that is left is still fully furred. However, his coloring has started to fade, just on his lower back.
You can see his fully furred nub in this picture:

Perhaps like people, gliders all age differently? Some men bald in their 20's, some still have a full head of hair in their 80's, some people seem to never go grey, etc.

Sorry,
I wasn't keeping up with the post. The reason I say 16 instead of 17 is that I don't know her birthday. So I made Groundhog's Day her "unoffical B-Day".

As far as being sure of her age, I am a nurse and she was the pet of a doctor that I worked with. She was his only glider and he was pretty specific about her and her previous care.

He said she had been the "breeder's Choi

Good Catch on the math Teresa!

I was given Aspen 9 years ago by a doctor that I worked with.

He was pretty detailed about her. He said that he loved her but his wife didn't and that she had been the "breeder's Choice". He had quite a bit of information about her so I am pretty convinced that he was aware of all of her details. Especially since she was his only glider. He said at the time I got her she was 8 years old.

So, since I didn't know an official B-day I call Groundhog's Day her B-Day. You are very right Teresa, she could be 17 years old. I am just not positive. Either way, she is slowing a little and has always looked a little "older" than any other gliders I have had, but she runs on her wheel almost every night (only twice or so but I'll take it) and is one of the 1st to the food bowl.

I don't care how old she is, I'll take it. However, all evidence I have points to her being at least 16 years old.
