I checked on the gliders this morning. Mom and dad were running around the cage and the joeys were in the bottom of the sleeping pouch. I checked on the joeys and they were cold (stupid me forgot to check their bellies). I put a blankie in the microwave and warmed them up, put them back in the pouch and mommy quickly crawled in and let them re-attach. Is she rejecting?

PS I've been supplementing one joey, she's much younger and smaller than her brother. Should I start supplementing the other?

I would suppliment both. Keep a close eye on them. Each time they get really cold like that you risk loosing them.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I hope someone with more advice comes along but i read alot about joeys rejection. If she lets them reattach it wont be rejecting but if they left them in the pouch that means either they arent good parents or are close to rejection. Normally i think they take turns in leaving pouch. Are they being more protective since shes became pregnant? Well hope someone comes along with more advice i would srat supplementing id rather be safe than sorry!

We lost our twin girls because mommy and daddy was doing that here. Knowing what we've been through, I have to say supplement them both and check on them CONSTANTLY. If both are out of the pouch playing, turn on a light and coax them back in the pouch. Leave the light on and only have one pouch, remove excess toys so that the parents may be forced to stay with the babies.

Thanks guys. They're fine, now. They've been nursing all day. It only seems a problem at night, when mom and dad both want to play. Usually they'll take turns playing and eating, but sometimes I do find mom and dad out together. I never thought much of it until I found them cold today...

[:"blue"]FYI, Dancing (Teresa) probably has as much experience with rejected joeys as anyone here. She's put in her time getting up around the clock to hand feed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif" alt="" /> I'd take her advice any day. [/]

Ok
Some first time parents don't know what they are suppose to do. If Dad is not a good babysitter he will leave the joeys. I have seen this with babies that are not being rejected, but have see more of it when they are being rejected. If he stays with the babies and refuses to come out, mom will re-enter the bed, just to be with him- not necessarily to feed the joeys. Because she is forced to stay in the pouch - because that is the only way she will get to be with him, the babies latch on at that time. Some dad's need a second pregnancy to realize what they are suppose to do. It is not to say that your Dad doesn't know what to do, but just hasn't learned it all. If he is a second time dad and the joeys are cold, they are most likely being rejected and need to be supplemented. It only takes about four min for the joey to lose its body temp. some joeys are so sweet they never cry so it is hard to tell. I remember when Gus was alive, he and Princess would leave the joeys. She never had enough milk and she was very small. It was on the third pregnancy that he did stay with the joeys until she came back. When I tell someone to watch for a rejected joey, the first question I ask them is, "Is this a first time mom?" The second question is, "How old are the parents, particularly the mom?" The third question I ask is "Are they leaving the joeys at the same time for longer than two min?" The fourth question I ask is, "Are the babies crying and the parents don't come back to them?" The fifth question is "Do you find a baby wandering outside the bag, at the top of the bag, or just wandering around the inside of the bag, not latched on to mama if they are less than a week old." Watch for any of these signs. They are all signs that a joey could be rejected.

[:"green"]I would definitely start to supplement both joeys & keep a careful watch on them to make sure they aren't being left for more than a few minutes at a time. When a joey gets cold, it can expire very quickly. Since you have already found them cold once, I would be very precautious about it happening again...

Mothers who do not have enough milk will often let their little ones suckle even though there is not an efficent milk supply. Thus... she is "not" rejecting her little ones.... she just does not have enough milk to go around.

Since one baby is smaller than the other sibling... this itself usually would indicate there is a milk shortage.

My advice is "supplement feed" the smaller baby every six hours and the larger of the two ... twice a day which can be adjusted accordingly as needed.

Put an extra blankie or two inside the pouch to help hold the heat of the wee ones if left alone.

Often being a Good Daddy is a learning process. Next set of babies the male should be more willing to babysit the wee ones.

Puppy Milk is a good substitue to use as is the BML diluted with the milk replacer if one does not have the Marsupial Milk.
