I read so many posts on people who have trouble with trimming nails.

so here is my 2 cents worth:

this will not work for every glider. If your glider can be stroked by you while while sleeping, this will work great for you, and you are halfway there!

it takes some time, but every day while your glider is sleeping in its pouch, put your hand in the pouch and leave it there. Let them sleep and get used to you being there as a family member.

eventually you should be able to move your hand around in the pouch without disturbing them. Just like they do to eachother. They move around and change positions while sleeping. so should your hand. be gentle, and move slowly.

work your way up to be able to touch, hold, caress every part of their body. without waking them up. By the way, this really adds to the whole bonding thing as well. and comes in handy if there is a medical reason for touching them.

then try to just HOLD the feet. work your way up slowly to be able to rub and gently (GENTLY) squeeze and hold the feet, and touch each toe and nail. like you would need to do while trimming. when you can do this without them waking up, you are ready to trim.

I use very sharp nail clippers, and take off just the tiny little tip.

I added a video to "my gliders" site showing how I can rub Arwen's feet without her waking up. sorry no clipping as I needed another hand to hold the camera. will try to coerce the hubby for the next time.

This is a great thread and I completely agree with this! I played with my babies' feet all the time! I still have trouble from time to time with my wiggly Bandit, but they don't mind the fact that I touch their feet. It's more so that they want to play!!

Great thread for those still learning and trying their hand at this! Thanks, JillMarie!

I can do all of that, JillMarie, for mine, though - it's the clipping sound that gets them. They are calm, relaxed and sweet as can be, when I snip the first nail and they hear that sound, it's all over. roflmao

That is great advice, though. Whether it helps with clipping nails or not, getting to know your glider and helping your glider get comfortable with being handled all over is a huge help at the vet's office too. thumb

did you watch the video on my site? It was sooo hard to do trying to hold the camera under my chin, cuddle her, not laugh or breath into microphone...

I did! roflmao Loved it! I also love to rub their little hands like that, and it's nice to know they are comfortable with it.

Great post!

I just finished cutting my girls nails and something that is also sooooooo helpful is distracting them. I do their little hands first then give them a super special treat and that keeps them busy while I do the feet!

Everything is over and done with in just a minute or so!

My two.. must be rather crazy. I was sooo scared of nail trimming the fist time, although they let me fool around with them in their pouches all the time. I separated them, and then with my scissors-like-nail-clippers, just snipped... when IIII realized Sugar wasn't upset by it, pretty soon she was just watching me as I trimmed them. with a 'hurry up' look to match! Sugar was wiggly and wormy, but for the front feet ended up sitting and watching too, while munching on a piece of papya.

errr, Spice was wiggly and wormy not sugar. Silly spelling errors.
