My Suggies have regular check ups with fecals done and it would seem that one of my females has a round worm. The vet says it is no different then the worms present in cats and kittens, isn't harmful, and is dormant whenever she is not pregnant. When she is nursing though, it transfers to the joeys just as it does with kittens. We treat with a dewormer, Panacur which takes care of the joeys but my momma keeps passing it to each new litter. I want to treat her on a continuing cycle to hopefully eradicate the worm for good but I don't know how the panacur will effect the embryo or developing IP joeys. My vet couldn't advise me as the product only has info for dogs, but does say that it is safe to use on pregnant moms. I'm not sure what I should do. Each time our new joeys leave the house, mom and dad are mating again within about a week. Even though the round worm is not dangerous I would certainly rather get rid of it for good.

Personally I would stop breeding her...

I would also notify the homes who adopted your joeys and let them know there is a possibility the joey has roundworms.

My joeys from this female have all gone home fully informed of the possibility of Round Worm and extra Panacur treatment, whether they have shown it in their fecal or not. I keep track of all joeys and they are scheduled for a follow up fecal in 3 months to be sure the round worm is cleared up. This pair loves having babies and produces the sweetest most lovable joeys that neutering dad would be very sad and a last resort. I have only 2 cages of gliders, with just the 1 breeding.

I would at least separate them for a period of time until you get this under control so no babies are involved. Even though they produce sweet babies, and yes it is VERY sad, I still believe a Glider with a known issue that can be passed to offspring should not ever be bred.

It's a hard thing to do, but think about what is best for them.

The round worm is easily treatable and if not I would definitely not be breeding them smile but what I'm trying to do is figure out the best course of treatment. Sorry I guess I may not have been clear in my questioning. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this and would recommend treating while she is pregnant. The joeys are treated at a few weeks OOP which is safe but I don't know whether it is ok to treat mom while the joeys are embryonic or are IP. I would assume so, but don't want to cause any issues. They have already bred so separating them now is not an option. With 3-4 consecutive treatments in 2 week intervals the round worms should be cleared up completely(according to their lifecycle). But I would like to start now rather then wait until they come OOP. For those of you who are familiar with Panacur maybe you might have some advise for me. There just isn't alot of information about it relating to Gliders.

Sorry - thats the best advice I can give. Perhaps your vet can consult with another exotic vet more familiar with the meds?

panacur is one of the more mild wormers, so the ip/not yet ip joeys should be safe with mom being given it wink

Dawn,
Personally, I would go ahead and treat the mother with the Panacur and get rid of the roundworms once and for all. Take the nominal risk to the developing joeys and realize that the overall health of the mother is ultimately more important than the slight risk of miscarriage. It's a hard decision to make, but one that really is important, I believe.

Roundworm is not easy to get rid of in gliders. One of our rescues had it and it recurs with stress. She has been on the on and off again treatment in 3 week cycles for months. It will also spread to other gliders if they are close by or share toys, pouches, dishes, etc. When you handle her or the joeys, you'll need to wash your hands and any other contact area immediately as it can spread to you also.

Roundworm can be fatal, especially in a tiny animal like a glider. The worms when hatched suck and eat all the nutrients out of the body. A glider can go down FAST from this. It's a cycle of eggs that hatch under stress (physical such as pregnancy or mental stress which takes a toll on the body), turn into the worms which lay eggs..on and on..3 week cycles.

Our girl doesn't have joeys, her mate was neutered years ago and they are about 9 yrs. old now. I would seriously consider neutering your boy and not letting her have anymore joeys. JMO

If she starts to vomit (as our girl did), she will need to get seen ASAP. Roundworms can cause SEVERE abdominal pain, partial or COMPLETE blockage in the intestines. There are also many other diseases that the roundworms themselves carry and can pass those on as well.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to start treatments now. She is good and healthy and goes in to the vet with each of her sets of joeys, so about 3 times a year. No one else in our house has had them show up in their fecals thankfully, and when we do hers their is only 1 egg present in the sample if any. The vet is not concerned for her health wise, but I see now how it could certainly develop into a problem. Let the battle begin. Thanks
