There seems to be so many gliders that have partial tail amputations I was wondering if any members have gliders without or with partail tails that can glide. Since the gliders use their tails as rudders for steering it would seem that the loss of the tail would cause them problems if they ever attempted to glide.

I've had 2 gliders without tails and both could glide. I also have some gliders with full tails that won't even try to glide.

We have 1 glider with a little less than half her tail (2 inches or so) and she tries her hardest, I guess you could say she glides, even though its never farther than a couple feet that she jumps.

My vet, Dr Thomas, said that many gliders learn to adapt with a tail missing ans can generally still glide.

Since we're on the parts missing/gliding subject...My Zeebo has a small chunk missing from his patagium and he can still glide well. I know alot of people wonder if they can glide with a damaged patagium, so, yeah with a minor flaw anyway. Good glides btw, one side of the room to the other.

I have been told that gliders do not use their tails as rudders as flying squirrels do... therefore a missing tail does not affect their ability to glide.

I have a glider with a short tail...his is only about 2 and a half inches long right now (he's still growing). He jumps a bit...I can't say that he is as coordinated as my others, but he's still getting used to bigger jumps, because he's pretty young still. He is also learning that there are edges to tables...lol (he was running to the end of it to jump from it to the couch and instead ran straight off the table...lol)

TMarie, it seems like I've heard the same thing about flyers using their tails more in flight (glide) than gliders do.

I think my Buffys problem is she doesn't want to leave mom long enough to glide lol, When I first got her I never thought she would be a loving girl to mom but a year later she loves her mommy, she was a very hard luck case I adopted from a rescue. She wasn't considered adoptable and had never been with other gliders but now shes loving and paired with two neutered boys so its possible to turn around abused gliders takes long long time, Her tail was amputated due to her parents chewing it off. I think it makes her cuter with such a short nub. I know shes wanting mom when Its standing straight up lol.

I recently adopted a female who has had a leg and partial tail amputation due to a dog attack at her previous owner's. She gets along just as good as my other babies do and definately has the sweetest temperment. She's a living miracle.

My poor Tiger Lilly has maybe 1/2" of a nub left for a tail (she's a "poster child" for using the right type of exercise wheel!) but she's the most muscular thing I've ever seen. She's huge in size, but that's because she walks & climbs everywhere she wants to go. She jumps & tries to fly, but it just doesn't work too well. I don't call her "handicapped" though, she's adjusted to life rather well! I have put special toys in her cage so she can climb up or down, left to right, wherever she wants to go. She's such a sweet baby girl!

The glider I helped out with has no tail and he does pretty good. I don't think he had much confidence until he got his lady friend

Charlie, our Gim had just a stub, and always wobbled and crashed when he tried (but he never quit trying)...though in his last year he didn't crash as spectacularly, and seemed to have a bit more control.

Chronos has a bit over half his tail, and seems to glide fine, but because of his deformed feet, his problem is in the landing...he has no grip, and tumbles.

I have 2 gliders with out tails. This was caused by parents overgrooming. Neither can glide at this point. They hop like bunnies it's real cute. It seems as if they know they cant glide, so they dont even try. Never the less they are adorable. And I wouldn't change a thing.

Oz is doing real good with her tail amputation. She seems happy as can be and glides as normal.I have never tried her in high up places though.
Beatrice does great too and since day one of her surgery she has acted like normal jumping and playing

The 2 that I have are 4 1/2 months maybe they are to young to try to glide. I dont know if age has anything to do with it or not. They love to climb and jump but not glide yet.I dont know maybe they will try some day. They do love the high places
Im glad yours is doing well

I guess she just wasn't ready. But this morning she did glide over and over. From my shoulder to the bed and up my leg to my shoulder and back to the bed. Oh this was priceless. Im so proud of her.

My little girl Costa, has only a partial tail because her's got stuck in a wire wheel before we got her. She is actually much more active than her mate Abby. She always worries me because she's so small, but I've figured out that she just has an overactive metabolism

A few weeks ago, we were at the lake in our trailer and she was out playing. A few times she tried to jump into a door, only to crash land. Then she glided from the top of the shower over to the bed to land on hubby's head. It was adorable.

Abby, on the other hand, has a full tail, but tends to be a momma's boy, prefering to stay on me rather than jumping around

Druin, my gliders with out tails seem more active also, not sure why but they do. Your lake trip sounds like you all had a great time. Have you noticed, at least I have that my males seem more attached or bonded than my females. Sorry got off topic. Anyways Im glad to see people with special gliders doing so well.

Hi,

Our little one, Bailey, had to have the tip of her tail amputated this morning (7-9-06). We won't see her until tomorrow....

What kinds of things can we expect? Behavior? Demeanor? Appetite? Recovery Time? or anything else that you have observed of, heard, etc?

Thanks a ton
Best,
Matt and Chrissy
