My mother has a couple of Crape Myrtle trees in her yard. I asked her if she used a special soil or fertilizer with pesticides in it. She told me that she used to use a special soil or something specifically for those bushes and her Lilac trees, but hadn't for about 3 years. Also, she couldn't remember what it was exactly. I'm wondering if clippings from these trees would be safe to use.

What would you recommend, yes or no?

If she hasn't used anything in 3 years, they should be fine.

Oh, great! Thank you!

They will be so much fun for my babies! Hopefully I can get some clippings soon.

So I understand about baking branches from outdoors to kill any insects and such, but I'm wondering, what do you do if you want to have a really long or just large branch and it won't fit in your oven?

I was hoping to get one that I could lodge from floor to a good bit up the cage for them to climb and play on.

Honestly I put a long, little branch is Zoey's cage once and I didn't bake it or anything. I checked for mold and bugs, but that was it and she's alive and well. Had a good time tearing up the leaves too. wink

I have done the same with fresh apple branches, especially in the Spring during budding season.

They won't last long, and the gliders seem to really really heart tearing them up. It's also excellent for their nails.

I've also put in branches without baking them. I got them from my parents home which is in the country, so no risk of pesticides or chemicals. And I cut it right off the tree so it wasn't laying on the ground growing bacteria or mixing with dirt. They LOVE them.
