I'm going to be making a pvc glider cage soon and tonight I was researching to see if there was anything I could use to paint it black. I found several sights that say you can paint cages with rustoleum, and it's safe. I also know that krylon fusion chemically bonds to plastic and is safe to use in reef aquariums (I've used it in mine). Would either of them be safe? I plan on attaching the hardware cloth to the inside of the PVC frame so my gliders wouldn't have too much access to it, also neither of them are big chewers.

I just found this page that pretty much answers my question. I guess rustoleum is safe?

Well, just to make sure, I wrote the company myself, and they just replied, stating, all rustoleum products are non toxic once dry.

I just thought I'd let everyone know smile

Krylon Fusion is a good option too. If you've used it for your tank, you know that it's really nice to use and covers quickly.

I very much appreciate that info, Kelii. My project today has been to "take on" refurbishing 2 wire cages that have quite the outbreak of rust. I bought some Rustoleum Rust Stripper to get rid of the worst spots....it took 2 rounds but 99% of the rust is GONE! thumb I've sprayed a coat of Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer over the whole thing, and tomorrow will put 2 coats of gloss black enamel all over it. I know it needs a handful of days to sit & dry before I put any suggies in there (AND washing it down before I do), but I have to have it DONE and set up before April 22. (Air Force son might be coming home for Easter, and he'd have a grand tant tant to see a reptarium sitting on his bed right now!)

And when I get these 2 cages done, there's 10 more waiting for the same procedure! shock Like someone told me earlier today, I just go OUTTA MY WAY to find projects to tackle. Well, what can I say? dunno I get bored with sitting in front of the sewing machine all the time, and a couple of these cages are going to railroading hubs or nearby rescue homes. The ONLY thing wrong with them is that they're a little rusty. And if I can make them usable for somebody, then I will.

NP! I was thrilled to find out there was a safe product I could use. I'm the same way tackling projects. I Just bought them a brand new cage, but want to tackle a 72X40X20 PVC cage. 1,200 zipties, here I come!

Yeah, Jess, that's the way I roll....I can't do much more than be a stopover for gliders and run short legs of railroads, and I know of a couple folks out there who could use extra cages that could fold almost flat when not in use...and since someone ELSE was kind enough to give them to me, I'll make them usable again for somebody else.

Another thing I learned, Kelii: YOU ABSOLUTELY !!HAVE!! TO INVEST IN A CHEAP PAIR OF KITCHEN GLOVES WHEN YOU GET TO THE POINT OF SPRAY-PAINTING!!! My hands were completely black from the spray paint dripping and flying everywhere. And that Rustoleum DOES NOT come off easily! My husband even ran to the hardware store & bought a can of Methel Ethel Ketone (which strips the paint off ANYTHING but my hands)....I still have paint in the deepest grooves of my fingerprints, my nails look like that of a diesel mechanic, and I've learned my lesson VERY WELL that I'll never do THAT again! shakehead I'm just glad I didn't decide to paint the cages neon green or some other "wild" color....can you imagine the looks I'd get? roflmao

Not much different than the looks of a small animal poking its nose out of your top in walmart, I am sure! roflmao

So Rustoleum is okay to use? How doe sit hold up for washings? I have one cage that I want to re-do (color choice and a few rusty spots), but I have hesitated. If i could do it black, that would be amaaazing!

From what I hear from Talking Feathers (who is using the very FIRST cage I did this way), it's holding up pretty well to the weekly rag-washings that we've had to do in Indiana because it's been too COLD to take out & hose down properly. We're looking forward to the warmth of the days when we can do that cool and I'll be anxious to see it in true daylight!

oooooo! Well, I live in a third story apartment, so rag washes are about all I do, other than a floor grate steaming once a week and a showering once every other month (now that I know the cages will fit LOL)

Will the paint stand up well to shower washings? Dragging it around isn't going to cause any chipping will it?
