Two new gliders were left with me for my sugar glider sanctuary. After meeting with their previous owner she told me the younger one, bambam, will sometimes get toothaches after eating hard foods, such as walnuts, and she may have another toothache as she hasn't seen her out of the pouch for a few days. I was told she may need to see the vet again, which I have an appointment with them in six hours, and the tell tale sign of this issue is her eye becoming swollen. I looked at her when we got home and sure enough her left eye was all puffy. Now, by toothache I'm only assuming she meant tooth infection because her vet would put the glider on amoxicillin. She also told me the last dose of antibiotics ended about a week ago. All that being said, I didn't rush her to the vet hospital because she was still eating and playing in the cage when I sat with them that night.

My question is, has anyone ever experienced this with sugar gliders? I have 7 sugar gliders, not including the pair she's left with me, and I've never had this issue. Granted, I've never fed them nuts either and the hard food I give are treats in the form of cheerios or chex. Some of their veggies are on the harder side, like carrots and parsnips. So I'm also wondering if I should be worried about the veggies I give this particular glider, and if I should start pureeing her veggies to make it easier on her?

If anyone's ever had this issue I'd love to hear how you've prevented it from reoccurring. Or if you had to get your gliders problematic tooth removed, as I've heard someone had to do this due to the infection getting too bad.

[color:#3333FF][font:Verdana]She very well could have a bad tooth that is aggravated when eating things like nuts but is not caused by eating them.

These issues can keep coming back just like a bad cavity does with us if not attended to properly. It might be the tooth needs to be extracted as happens in some cases.

I would definitely take her to the vet and tell him this is an ongoing problem.
