I have a trio, my oldest is a neutered male and he is approximately around 8yrs old, and my girls are approximately around 6yrs old. I have read in several places that at ages 8-10 is the "average lifespan" of gliders in captivity, with one site mentioning ages 6-8 as the average lifespan, although they can live up to 15 yrs (12-15).

So, would my Ollie boy be considered an "old man" at around 8 yrs? What should I watch for? And are they're any adaptations suggested to help him through his "senior" years?

He's always been little, especially compared to my fluffy girls, and he's fairly active. He likes to be on the wheel, and he likes to jump, though he struggles a bit when climbing around the cage.

I think old age depends on the glider. I consider anything over 6 senior, but that pertains to the rescues that I bring in because we don't know how they were taken care of their whole life. I don't adopt them out at that age, unless it is to an experienced glider owner that understands that they could live another 6 to 9 years or they could die within the year.

As far as your little man goes, I would watch for dental issues, keep track of his weight, make sure the fluffy girls are not bullying him and that his nails are not sticking to anything.

With him having some problems getting around the cage add some corner hammocks or get some little shelves to mount around the cage. There are some out there for parrots that are made out of stone and they would be easy to clean and not hold odors like wood shelves.

Good luck with your little man.

Thank you Kimberly!

Lol, I can't say that the fluffy girls bully him, he actually chases them away from his eating spot most of the time. dunno Maybe they've taken something from him before, not certain, but they don't get a chance to now anyways. He started this behavior after placing them in the Lrg Sturdy cage. He also dominated some of the floor toys at one time, though I've not seen him do that in a while (since Skadoosh sat on him after he kept chasing her from their tree house several times). I have two f/v stations, as that is the only source he bickers over, so the girls can go to another f/v station located opposite the one Ollie is guarding.

I currently have two shelves spanning front to back and several wood ledges & perches. I haven't had too much trouble with them stinking (I soak them in v/w solution). However, I've been considering getting some rock in there, thinking it would help with their nails (like it does for lizards). I had hoped the wood would help with that, but it hasn't so far. What stone products are you referring to? Where can I find them?

I usually place things so he can hop or jump from place to place, but he still has to climb some, especially when coming to the door to come out.

I just ordered the Brisbane cage, with all of us getting older, lol. I was thinking it would be best for us all, as I'm struggling physically with both the daily & weekly maintenance of the Lrg Sturdy. For them, I feel I can place their furnishings better for hopping and jumping around the cage without over crowding it. We also live in a tight space and it's getting out of control trying to place stuff away.

Thanks again, I'll continue to monitor him closely.

I consider average live span is 6-10 years old. Anything over 10 is a senior glider.

Terry if your man is having issues walking or climbing you may want to see a vet. Or being at age maybe antibiotics. Depending on whether he is able to be tested other than fecals.(bloodwork). They shouldn't slow down until 13-15 they seem to have a weird walk or running. I have a video of Tuffy(SM repeater) running on cage side but can't load directly. It's on face book and not sure I can share link. Even at that age they climb and hold on securely, until closer to passing sometimes they stay on bottom of cage for a few months(Charlie did that at 16 old. Tuffy, Fluee, May May, Kay Kay never did thou but weren't 16 either. Tiny that is 15 now climbs on her shelf every night.

WARNING: My blind boy Tuffy actually fell out of a corner hammock and we believe started his self mutilating or chewing area.

Thank you. He hasn't slowed down, he prefers to jump or hop from ledges to shelves most of the time, but when he climbs up the cage bars, he seems to slip and appears to have difficulty. I think he appears to be struggling with it little more so recently and thought possibibly due to getting older. He runs fine on wheel, he climbs fleece wall and my fleece sweater fine at play time, it's just those cage bars.
