I was under the impression that glider needed to be in temps around 75 degrees F and that cold drafts can be bad for them. I would also fear other animals getting to them or them escaping. if they escape in the house then it is less likely to lose them forever. how do you take them out and play with them if the cage is outside? just wondering.

Gliders should definately be kept inside! Cold drafts are so dangerous to their health not to mention the other nocturnal animals that could prey on them. Being in a cage is not enough to keep them safe.

My cage is very solid and I can get inside with them. I have two cats so I never take the chance taking them out. I do want to keep them inside if that is what is best for them. Just to keep the record straight, my gizmo and gomez have been outside for only a couple of weeks during our move and the temperture has been in the low 70's at night.

Gliders are not native to the United States, and the habitat they live in is different from ours. Gliders in the wild are killed or injured at times, and do die from illnesses and preditors. We are responsible for them when they become ours, and need to keep them safe. I konw you don't mean harm, and you seen to really love your babies, but get them inside as soon as possilbe, today if you can. If they need to be in a smaller cage for a day or so that is better than taking a chance on something happening to them. Angie

I thought part of why they're illegal in Cali is cuz they could survive outside and it could throw off their eco.....

From what I have heard on this board and from what my vet says, gliders should be in temperatures between 65-80 at all times. I think 75 is a great average for them but I don't think it should ever get below mid 60's. I hope this helps!

I have actually heard of keeping gliders outside when the temp is okay. I have never done it, but I do remember reading about some guy in a warm state that kept his outside in an atrium-like enclosure that had a regulated temperature. As a matter of fact, the breeder that I got my first glider from kept his gliders outside in a shed-type building. It was heated and all that jazz. Now that I look back at it, I'm not sure that I approve of that lifestyle, but the gliders were definately kept warm. I would actually be more concerned with the gliders not getting enough socialization. It's a lot easier to simply get them from their cage in the living room, bedroom, etc then it is to go outside and fetch them. Does that make sense? I am in no waying implying that your gliders wouldn't be cared for, I'm just talking about it in general.

My main concern is safety, there is always the chance the gliders could escape, sometimes they are tricky little critters. If that happened it would be terrible. Also, cats and other animals may scare them and try to get into the cage. We are trying to catch some gliders that are running free here in Texas, so far we have only caught one, the rest have been found dead in neighbors yards. I don't want to see that happen. Angie

wow, your cage is big enough to get in! that's wonderful. so you have in cage time rather than them having out of cage time. it's good that you asked though before it was too late.

No the gliders arn't free roamining, gee its a long story, Please see hopes page Hope is the only surviving glider that was caught outside, we are still trying. The last glider, found approx 3 weeks ago, was found dead on the lawn. by a neighbor. We are still hoping to catch and help more now that the weather is cooling off. Angie

The guy i got my gliders from kept his outside in the garage. He always keeps the door down and he had a bunch of heating lamps on timers. He also houses a HUGE collection of reptiles out there. Animal, Would your gliders be able to get rained on? Like is the cage under some sort of shelter? Couldnt they catch their death of cold(literally not figurativly) if it were to rain?

Thank you for all your great advise. I have moved them back into the house. They were under shelter from the sun, but rain, what's that? Hasn't rained here since Febuary or maybe March. Only another week in a small cage and then back into their regular one. Yes, I love my critters and defenitly want what's best from them..

I'm glad they are back inside. Besides from the potential problems of them being outside, with them inside you get to watch them more and get to see all their little antics when they think no one is watchin! Mine do things when they think no one is lookin that they don't/won't do if I am.

[:"magenta"] i, too, am so relieved they are back inside! they should not be kept outside, in my opinion. i have read far too many stories about less delicate animals being killed while outside (cats, for example.) and sgs are far more fragile! i hope you will keep your little one(s) inside from now on. it really is much safer for them. just my thoughts.[/]
