For items that can't be thrown in the washer, such as bird toys and things with wood on them what does everyone use to get them clean? Will just spraying them off on the sink remove the scent markings? Or is it ok to soak them and in what?

I always use a little Dawn dishsoap, and maybe a splash of bleach to clean toys....but I soak and rinse them really, really well. I wouldn't use the bleach with the wood toys though.

For wood toys such as perches and ledges I just scrub with vinegar/water and then bake them at 200 for 20 min until they are dry.

For plastic toys, I use vinegar/water and soak them for about 10 min before I scrub them.

I never use bleach b/c I hate the smell and 'am paranoid my gliders will breathe it in while I wash.

On the topic of cleaning, has anyone tried using a steamer to clean their toys and cage?

I use the Ultimate Steam Cleaner on my cage! It's the greatest invention ever!!! It's the as seen on TV one where you push the button and wipe away the mess. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I recommend it.

I use a large steam cleaner on the cage- I love it.. I also use it on our hardwood floors- 50 oz capacity, long hose wiht multiple attachments.. its great! I do the same as Tina with it... the one I own is by steamfast and I adore it.. also use it in the kitchen and I want Bill to use it with the brass brush attachment on the grill! I run water as hot as possible with a bit of dishsoap into the tub full of toys, leave them soak for 1/2-1 hour (until water is cooled and cages cleaned) and then scrub as needed and rinse well.. same with the wheels!

I have a steamer like that, never thought of using it. I originally got it to clean rabbit cages but you know how that goes. Thanks for all the ideas. I cleaned a few of their toys with wood on them last night (bird toys) and tons of dye came off in the wter. I see why most toys are fabric or plastic!
