Well things had been going well till saturday night Mad Mardigan started crabbing and hissing worse then I had ever heard before. He was in his pouch and it looked as if he was fighting with something or was stuck. When I touched the pouch he came flying out and ran to the back of his cage and just sat there for a few min. Then he stood up on his hind legs bent over and started either washing or biting himself near his tail on the underside. Then he started crabbing again. After awile I got him to come to me so I could see what was wrong. There appears to be a small wound between his anus and his tail there was a slight amount of blood there and it looked as though he had just done it when he was in his pouch. Then he attempted to go to the bathroom and I could see that he was straining alot. The only result of his efforts to go was a drop of blood. I took him to an emergency vet and had him checked, the vet said that she believes he has an abcessed anal gland, she said that the fluid from one of them seemed thicker then normal and thinks that is why he is straining and that he probably bit himself because of the fact that he is having a hard time going to the bathroom. She gave me nolvasan solotion to wash his underside with to keep it clean and baytril susp-avian to give him orally twice a day.
Has anyone had this happen or know of something else it could be or any info you could give me would be appreciated. I checked him this morning for blood or any sign of self mutilation and it seems as though he has not done any more damage yet. But he was unsuccessfull and going to the bathroom agian today.

He is roughly a year old I believe and I feed him BML and a variety of fruits and veggies and meal worms every few days.

I have another glider but they have seperate cages right now. The cages had been about an inch apart but I noticed Mad Mardigan was biting me more after I had put them so close to each other so I moved him away again.

any ideas? if you need more info just ask
Thanks

AborealTreat,

I have never heard of a condition such as this. I did a search and this is the closest I could find.

http://www.sugarglider.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000871

Hopefully, someone else will be of more assistance.

I do have a suggestion. You have mentioned that your vet gave you something to treat the affected area. He had given you a sterile solution to keep it clean topically and he had prescribed antibiotic therapy to treat the area systemicly. However, he did not give you anything to make it easier for your glider to eliminate the fecal material with ease. So your glider can still not go to the bathroom because it is painful.

To ease the situation for your glider you need to soften the stool. This way it may pass more readily. There are a number of solutions for this and I would recommend any of the following items if you have any at hand: apple juice, grapes, oranges, Glideraid, mineral oil, raisins, etc., but not in that order.

All of these soften the stool. Since he has had this problem coming up on a day, I would start giving him these items in the form of licky treats or treats right away.

My first suggestion would be the mineral oil. Put a small drop on your finger and let him lick it up. This will soften any stool in the bowel. Try another drop later if he has not gone to the bathroom. If he does not lick the drop readily, mix a drop of yogurt with it. This will mask the taste and add needed flora to the intestinal track.

If that doesn't work or he refuses that--try oranges. The citric acid causes an osmotic reaction and brings water into the large intestines thereby softening the stool.

Try a little apple juice and raisins or grapes. These are usually taken pretty readily by gliders during the day as licky treats but may take a little longer to work.

The problem here is that your gliders needs to go but it is probably painful becase of the mass and the relative hardness of the stool. The things your vet gave are good but are only treating the infection of that area and will take time to work. In the meantime, your glider needs to go to the bathroom or this could lead to fecal impaction and other problems.

So try some or all of the things I suggested and hopefully that will soften the stool enough so it is no longer painful for him to eliminate waste. The items I suggested above will not interfere with the medications if given in the small amounts I described.

Let us all know how everything comes out. Pardon the pun.

Something to think about, excessive amounts of fat in the diet is another problem that can contribute to constipation. Personally, I would eliminate the mealies. Switch to Crickets as fat content is lower.

Orange juice is very good. Give a tabelspoon or so in a small dish.

Other alternatives to help move the obstruction down are the mineral oil...Laxatone that is used as a hairball remedy for cats is very effective as it has mineral oil in it. Also, tastes good. 1/4 inch should be effective. Can get it from the vet. There are other brands on the market but the Laxatone is really the best. Purchase it at a vet's Clinic.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick replies!!
you all rock!
I gave him a few extra grapes and finally got him to take a raisin this afternoon and had him take some orange juice and a piece of pinapple too.
I gave him his meds and wiped him down again tonight and he ate the meds up quickly when I mixed it with some lowfat yogurt
and when I washed him he ended up pooping 3 times in a row!!

However there is still waht I believe is a scab and a discoloration in the area but hopefully that will get better soon I have not seen him bite himself yet, just light washing.
I will check him again in the morning and make another appt with the vet to check his progress and have him weighed again to see if he is losing much weight, I know he isnt eating as much as normal, but at least he is eating some. I will also get some mineral oil or some laxitive from the vet just incase I need it later, that way I dont have to delay if he ends up needing it.

Any suggestions on what I should do for his diet until this is cleared up or at least till he starts eating more?

He normally gets some BML and a random mix of grapes blueberries canteloupe watermelon, honeydew, strawberries, and pineapple and/or
corn, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots ect ect and occasionally ill substitute some of the fruits or veggies with some fruit or veggie baby food mix.
I guess my question is should I back off of a certain type of food? like less BML and more grapes pinapple and raisins?

Im sure I have left something out, if i think of any more ill add it
Thanks again everyone

Ps I have about 8 bad quality pics of the wound if anyone thinks it would help....

Great news! So the suggestions helped! I am just glad he went OK. You don't want to keep giving him the things we recommended earlier, now that he has normal bowel function. Go back to his regular diet and keep an eye on him as you have been doing. Glider's stools are normally soft enough to pass. The scab should start healing nicely in the next 36 to 48 hours with the medications and cleaning. Do not cut back on the BML just the stuff we told you about to get him to go, or he might get diarrhea and that is another problem in itself. You should be fine now!

well good news and bad...i think...
Mad Mardigan does seem like he is doing better, he has been eating more normally, going to the bathroom and he has not been biting himself. However I noticed tonight that the spot on his chest that I assume is the location of another scent gland, was red and looked pretty irritated. I am going to make another appointment with the vet in the morning when I get home from work to have him checked out again to make sure he is in fact healing and have her look at the gland on his chest to see if that should be medicated as well.

He seems to be very...calm. I dont know if its because he isnt feeling well, or if its the meds, or maybe he is finally bonding with me more now, hopefully he is just getting used to me. He is not lethargic, in fact he was doing ALOT of running in his wheel last night and seemed really playful. I am just very suprised at how quickly he stopped biting so much, lets hope he heals quickly and the bites dont come back....

Shannon, Thank you so much for the update. As for his chest area, that sounds like it is his scent gland over producing oil. It will at times become red looking but it should be fine. Still keep your vet appointment though as his back side should be looked at.

Let us know what you vet has to say after your little one is checked over.

Hey guys, sorry about the delay but I wanted to give Mad Mardigan a few days before I posted again since the recovery is going kinda slow there is no reason for you to have to read the same thing over and over
well he weighed 88grams on the 2nd trip so he lost a few grams but since he hadnt been eating well I'm not really suprised.

The vet said that he is healing up well and to continue what im doing and come back in a week and a half to see if he needs any more meds or anything. I feel so bad for him when she has to weigh him....he really does NOT like it.

He has been running and playing like normal and is able to go to the bathroom still although he still huffs and puffs to do so, at least he can go!

Now my problem is he doesnt like the meds anymore, I have mixed it with various treats and foods but he seems to be able to tell its there unless i dilute it so much that he would have to eat for 20 min to get it all down.

I feel horrible doing this but...to get him to take it I had to hold him with a towel against his will and put the syringe(no needle) in the corner of his mouth and squirt it on his lips to get him to lick it up
I hate hate hate doing this for the obvious reasons but also Im afraid that what little bonding I have achieved could be going right out the window.
He obviously doesnt like it...but he is not crabbing or hissing at me...

Is this or is this not a horrible thing to do to the little guy?

Giving meds to a glider usually hurts us more than the glider. Once he is let out of the towel he forgets that it was you who gave the nasty stuff to him.

Well I thought I was going to have good news and be able to have this thread end but it seems thats not going to happen quite yet
Mad Mardigan came off the meds as instructed by my vet on july 2nd.

Tonight the 6th, he has bitten himself again apparently unable to go the the bathroom again, once again on a saturday when there are no vets open, luckily I still have the meds that were left over and immediately gave him the dosage as before, I will talk with my vet again and see what she has to say.

Good news is last night, was my last night working the night shift, from now on I can see my gliders EVERY night.

Hopefully things like this will be avoided from now on as I will be able to give them more attention and be with them every night when they are up and about.

Scorch seems to be doing fine and I think that she may be reaching sexual maturity this week....or maybe she finds fireworks romantic I don't know it just seems like she just now realized that there is another glider around and REALLY wants to get to his cage and is much more "talkative"
ok im rambling now *sigh*
ill keep you updated

Shannon, Is your glider suffering from constipation?

The BML sometimes can be constipating. Does he eat enough fruits with it?

I would try giving him a slice of orange to help him potty.

If he is going to have constant bowel problems ask the vet about giving him a bit of mineral oil on a regular basis. Or possibly using Laxatone the hairball remedy used for cats. This way he will not get constipated and start chewing again. As one of these times he will do alot of damage to himself if not corrected soon.

He does seem to be straining when he goes to the bathroom I know he went at least once after he bit himself.

He doesnt seem to eat enough of his fruits and goes more for the BML
I'm going to try making a smoothie type of meal for him i think with frozen fruits and see how he feels about that since he doesn seem to like chewing as much.

I still havent been able to figure out if he is in pain and crabs and then licks himself or licks himself causes pain and then crabs, he does this mostly when he is in his pouch and wakes up.

Im going to try to get a better look at him in a bit.

Shannon,

Is it still actively bleeding? If not you may have to put an e-collar on him to prevent further damage until the vet can see him.

hes sitting in a towel in my lap now, calmed some
i dont see any blood flowing
but his bum seems to be covered in a combination of what looks like blood feces and I am guessing the fluid they use to mark with, he smells like very musky like he just marked something but i know its him that smells like it.
he doesnt look like he is chewing, just licking
and when he tries to go to the bathroom a drop or two of blood comes out
ill be giving him his 3rd dose of the meds i was givin before in about an hour

I've sent an e-mail out to try ang get you some help. If it is not actively bleeding, then just keep him as you are to prevent him from messing with it to much. I have to sign off in a few minutes. I'll check back in when I get home. I hope the little guy gets better. Is your vet available this morning?

Shannon,

How is Mad Mardigan doing? I was hoping that we would have some help by now, hopefully it will be here shortly. Seems as though these things always happen on weekends or holidays. It will be really nice if the same vet was in, at least then she would have some prior knowledge of the situation. If no one responds shortly, I'll start dialing the phone to get some help.

Well I called the vet, they are closed and the emergency clinic said shes not there today but they had someone that COULD see him if it was an emergency.....
nothing has changed other then that since last post
still sleepin in his pouch, im hoping he sleeps long enough for the meds to kick in and ill give him some extra citrus and raisins and grapes to help him go to the bathroom like i did last time....
If he is better today then, unless someone advises otherwise, I will just make an appointment with the vet this week to have him looked at again and ill just bring scorch in for her(first) yearly checkup.

My other concern now is cleaning him up, he doesnt like to be held and he likes to bite me so giving him meds or washing him at all is not fun or easy

Because of the current tenderness, would it be easier/possible to just use a shallow bowl of lukewarm water to kinda swish his bum in, instead of Q-tip or cotton ball?

Thanks for the help and sorry for all the rambling
MM says thanks too (by biting my finger)

ps..I am going to try to get a nap in.
I will have AIM running if anyone needs to get a msg to me or just wants to talk.
I sleep right next to my pc so everytime I wake up(quite often) I look over to see if I have any important msgs Im on as arborealtreat.
thx again

If he bites even one more time I would highly suggest applying an ecoller. Directions can be found atGlider Health
I think it would be fine to swish his bum in shallow warm water, just wrap him in a towel afterward to dry the area and keep him warm. However, this may not remove everything. Depending on the medicine, it may be okay to add a bit of neosporin to help with the pain of where the skin was broken. Assuming he does not bite again, he is eating, and has some pooping, going to your regular vet tomorrow should be okay, however if anything else seems abnormal or he is not eating drinking, or is biting take him to the emergency vet as you do not want further damage or dehydration (which we all know can happen very quickly). Keep us updated on how he is doing.

Shannon, how is your glider doing? Did you take him in to the emerg. clinic? If the emerg. clinic can do nothing but put an e-collar on your glider that will be a big help till tomorrow. At least it would keep him from chewing himself and doing more damage.

Did you try giving him some orange juice? Be sure to ask about some mineral oil or Laxatone to help with his constipation problem.

You can put some warm water in the sink to soak his bottom in. He will not like it but it is one way to help clean him up. It should also help sooth his sore bottom. Use a hand or kitchen towel to hold him with so he is unable to bite you.

Then wrap him in a clean towel to dry him and then rewrap in a clean towel to keep him warm.

sorry about the delay I just wanted to let you all know he seems like he is doing a little better, basically repeating the pattern like 2 weeks ago, I am going to continue doing what I did before until I can get him in to his normal vet again for either more meds or different meds or whatever she suggests. Emergency vet didnt have experience with gliders.
He is NOT chewing on himself
He ate some bml and some watermelon
He is drinking
ill post as soon as i have more info
thanks for the help and support we both appreciate it.

oh yea, I am giving him some orange/apple juice to help with his constipation

Shannon,

I'm glad to hear that Mad Mardigan is doing better, and I am real happy to hear that he is not chewing. Let us know what the vet says, and how he progresses. (Shannon is my brothers name by the way )

I'm relieved he isn't chewing on himself. When you first posted about the horrific crabbing, my first thought was "self-mutilation." As awful as this must be for him and for you, I'm glad that at least this isn't part of the problem. I hope a non-holiday week will bring you better vet care for the little fella. Keep us posted.
