Is there anything I should do to protect my glider from Pink Eye? I'm pretty sure I've got it, I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. They can't get anything from being in contact with it can they?

Pink eye is a herpes virus as far as I know they cannot contract any disease from us.

The only thing would be if we had parasites, ie giardia or crypto or something like that.

I would be very careful just in case. Make sure to wash your hands before handling your gliders. I sure hope it clears up quick for you.

Thank you Danielle, sorry I didn't see your post. Its very itchy and its sore too, people have been asking me about it ALL day, but I won't be going to school tomorrow, so hopefully I won't get TOO many people sick lol

Also: Chester had a vet visit today, just for a pedicure, and he crabbed the whole time, and bit the vet, the vet tech, me (through the pouch) and my sister when she put her fingers in the pouch (I have no idea why she did that, he was crabbing and was really mad) but none broke the skin. It was fuuuuun

We can get diseases from gliders, and gliders can certainly get sick from us. I would not go NEAR a glider if I had conjunctivitis. Please let other people handle and care for your gliders until you are well from this. It's highly contagious between humans, and I would not chance cross-contamination with my gliders.

This has always been a huge misconception regarding animals. I would say ask your doctor as he/she has most of the answers.

In farm animals there is a huge problem with people contracting diseases from animals, but I have never read of animals catching cold or infections from humans.

However, I will add if you pinkeye is caused by Bateria then I would be cautious as Lucy said just to be on the safe side.

Well, last night I let my mom feed him, and play with him in the tent for a little while, I didn't touch him (I didn't like doing that though) and I do have conjunctivitis. I'm home from school today, missing volleyball too. Thanks, I will not handle Chester until I'm no longer contagious, and after that, I'll still be careful

I don't know about gliders catching anything from humans but I do know ferrets can and do get colds and flu from humans and can pass it back too.

I think I agree with Lucy on this one. It is probably better to just stay away from the babies at this point in time. I know anytime I am sick I stay completely away from my babies just to be on the safe side. I sure hope it clears up for you real soon as I know how uncomfortable it can be.

Most pinkeye is not Herpes. Pinkeye in kids used to imply haemophilus influenzae (a bacterial infection) but the term has been used generically to mean many causes that cause a red eye. While it is often seen that some virus's tend to be species specific, bacteria usually don't tend to honor species barriers. There are notable exceptions to both of those generalities, however.

Simple things matter. There is probably no better prevention for spreading infection than hand washing. Certainly avoid contact when ill or when having an infection, but washing before and after glider contact is always a good idea.

Thanks you all, I'm better now, not contagious, but still a little pink in the eye. I think I lost the eyedrops on the bus though, so hopefully it doesn't come back. I didn't get it that bad, I guess though, it only itched and was sore a lot for one day, then it was just red

I stayed away from my glider, really most of my pets for that matter, except my cats, they follow me around most of the time. lol

I cannot say 100% for sure if they can get it (only because i have never seen any cases of it yet)
but i would suspect so if they were exposed.
pink eye is a viral or bacterial infection known as conjunctivitis. (it is NOT herpes-in some animals conjuctivia can be secondary to other problems like herpes in cats or distemper in dogs)
there are also other conditions of infection besides conjunctivits that looks simialr,so a proper diagnosis is important.
antibiotic eye drops prescibed by your veterinarian if the infection ever does occur will take care of the problem....
There really ins't any sort of preventative measures one would take to prevent pink eye, while keeping the enviroment clean, and keeping any unhealthy animals at bay, quarinting new or exposed animals could be considered precautions.
signs you may see in the beginning of conjunctivitis might be redness, swelling, discharge or even just a runny eye.
hope this was helpful
