1. Glider girl, age unknown (estimated 5 years). When she heard loud and sharp sounds, she had fits and then literally dropped dead and lay in a state similar to catatonia, not reacting to anything and drooling a bit. then in some 20-25 minutes this state passed, and the glider began to move as if nothing happened. This fits were not very fre4quent, but occured from time to time. The glider lived for another five years and died probably of age.

The question is, did anyone else have such an experience with his or ger gliders, and what might the diagnosis be?

2. Glider girl (not older than 1,5 years). The situation occured after she produced her first joyeys; when they were just OOP, she left the joyeys with their father. As she was cleaning her pouch, she sneezed from time to time and rubbed her face. Then, all of a sudden, she began to move erratically, and when the owner took the girl in her hands, convulsions occurred and lastet for quite a time. The owner tried to give her camomile decoction with fructose, one drop at a time; this convulsions lasted till morning, for about 4 hours all in all, and in the morning the glider did not recognise her owner and started shouting at her. Between the fits the glider either was dormant or passed out. At six o'clock in the morning one of the joyeys woke and cried for food, and the glider mother jumped up and ran to him immediatelly, as though nothing happened.
For the next 24 hours the glider girl had fits from time to time, but it was already not so bad.
The owner gave her plenty of raisins and camomile decoction with fructose.
For some tine the glider was OK, but now she is carrying a joyey again, and again she begins to sneeze & rub her face. The owner is quite worried; she thinks these fits can be somehow connected to pregnancy.

The question is, again, what the diagnosis might be and can it have any connection with having joyeys?

It might be one cause. An over abundance in hormone levels, or a sudden increase and decrease of estrogen.
Do you know if the glider is getting extra protein? If not, during the fetal development the protein levels drop therefore, it's necessary to make sure during pregnancy that she is given extra protein.

Unfortunately, both glider owners are offline; I'll give the additional information as soon as they appear.
What I can say for now is that in the first case the glider never had joyeys; in the second case, there were two joyeys, and it is her first breed.
May calcium deficiency be the cause?

There could be several causes for seizures in gliders and unfortunately we don't know what they all are or how to treat them. I have a boy that has had a few seizures after extensive activity (but not every time). I would tend to say if they are noticing the female is having seizures with joeys but not without, then she should not be bred, because it absolutely could be related. Hypoglycemia is a common seizure trigger, but seizures can also trigger hypoglycemia, so even if a vet witnessed a seizure, I'm not sure they would know what to do (particularly with an animal this small).

From my recollection, we have seen gliders that have seizures from assumed hypoglycemia, assumed hypocalcemia (low calcium), there are a couple of people who have gliders that seem to seize when stressed, some have also wondered about epilepsy in gliders, but there are no real answers anywhere because it hasn't been studied.

With the girl carrying joeys, I would make sure she was on a complete diet that had a history of providing enough protein and calcium to gliders (so those would not be of concern) and I would neuter her mate to avoid future pregnancies. If it is only happening while she is nursing, it may just be that her body just can't handle raising joeys for whatever reason. dunno

Sorry there isn't more info out there to help. Hope she is ok.

Thank you very much; for sure, any information is useful.

As for the she-glider diet plan (case #2), I now have detailed information. Her diet consists of the following:
- self-made yoghurt
- honey
- insects (when avaliable)
- low-fat cheese
- chicken meat (boiled or baked)
- quail eggs (boiled or fresh)
- cereal with honey
- nuts
- fruits (the gliders prefer mostly apples and avocado)
As far as I can see, the diet is quite normal; probably, calcium should be added, otherwise it's OK.

According to X-filefan, Also,if, due to the stresses of carrying joeys, or pregnancy, she is ending up with a borderline diabetic-like condition, or elevated blood pressure-the same can happen to pregnant women-it may be causing the seizures either due to sudden drops in blood glucose, or too much sudden blood volume to the brain. So pregnancy seems to be the issue if she doesn't seizure at any other time. I would not let this glider have any more joeys and get dad neutered. Seizures are serious, and this could be fatal with a bad enough one.
It is highly suggested that in order to determine the cause of these symptoms that the glider should be seen by a vet asap.

Most unfortunately, here in Russia we have next to none vets specializing in glider illnesses. Yet, if you can tell what analysis are to be taken, probably, that will help.

The diet concerns me in that it may be too low in calcium.

Like someone else described before, pregnancy is really taxing on a glider's body and can bring out health conditions like you describe if the mother is too low in protein or calcium.

I would definitely suspect a calcium deficiency as a possible culprit dunno Really they definitely would need to go to a vets.

Usually vets have to take a blood sample to establish calcium levels, which is hard to do with a glider...they usually have to be anesthesized, which is also risky for the glider (especially if you have a vet who doesnt' know what they are doing). Other times vets will do a urinalysis and fecal float and smear to see if the glider has any infections that may be causing it to behave strangely.

I think there are some vets in the U.S. that will do consults with other vets...hopefully someone will come on and post Dr. Tristan's number, perhaps?
