I had to take my youngest daughter to the peds ER last night. She has not been around the gliders, but of course was breathing in my face. Is strep contagious to gliders?

Side note- the lab did the strep screen very quickly. It came up positive immediately. The ER doctor already had our discharge papers written with a diagnosis of acute viral syndome and gave us a presciption for an antibiotic not meant for strep! As an employee, I was able to get my child the right antibiotic. How scary!

Yes, they can. Strep has been cultured in wounds on gliders as well. It's a bacteria, so unlike a virus they can get it. I'd be very cautious around your babies-let someone uninfected handle them if you can until you're in the clear. If you can't, wear one of those paper face masks (walmart has them for only a few dollars in the hardware area) and wash VERY thoroughly before and after handling them or their things/food.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Thanks!-I have the gliders in their bonding pouches. I'll have my older daughter put them away.

Strep can be carried or caught by almost any animal. I got it a LOT as a child, and we had everyone in the house tested (6 total), the dogs and the cats, and all tested negative... The last one left to test was was the rabbit, and guess who the carrier was! After a round of antibiotics for EVERYONE, I never got it again.

I have heard that dogs could be carriers, but didn't know about cats and rabbits. I wonder if gliders could be carriers? In my child's case, it is summer camp. This is our second round of strep this summer.

ohh how scarey the thought... because I catch strep like there is no tomorrow if I'm even in the same store as someone who might have it. guess who gets it!!! yepp me... I hate it with a passion. I couldn't bare the thought that I could pass it to my babies. I mean I knew that animals could be carriers and catch it, but just never thought about it that way with my babies before that is so scarey....

on a side note I hope your daughter gets feeling better alot soon. and that is scarey as well that even in the E.R. you where perscribed the wrong antibiotic and such, I guess some of them still are more concerned with making money, or getting ppl out of there as fast as possible without doing all the proper testing. I know here because S.A. has a lot of learning hospitals and a whole medical center. they love to test for everything. even if you tell them is wrong with you. because you where there two days before. nope there still gonna to at least 10 more tests.
