Keep reading...this info could protect your glider. Gypsy was the first glider that came into my life. He was Rose's mate and the father of 6 joeys. In order from oldest to youngest they are Joey, Taz, Gizmo, Reepicheep, Cider, and Bruno. They are all males except for Joey. Joey is the only joey I kept, and the other five joeys went to good homes. All of Gypsy's joeys have that beatifully shaped face like Gypsy did; he was a gorgeous glider. Gypsy died Saturday 9-27-03 during the night. I found him dead in the bottom of his and Rose's cage on Saturday morning. I think he had a seizure. Here's the story... Back in February Gypsy was infected with the parisite giarrdia from our water. His main symptom was diarrea. I took Gypsy to a vet only 20 minutes from my home. Although she had never treated a glider before she was willing to try. She called a vet in the state that knows a lot about gliders and was given specific instructions on how to care for him. I went back into the operation room with them. The vet put him in the gas mask to sedate him so they could inject him with fluids since he was probably dehydrated. They gave him too much gas and his heart started slowing down. The vet grabbed him out of the gas and started rubbing his heart. She gave him to me and I started rubbing his heart and saying "Gypsy wake up." Well, he did , although, he was really never the same after that. He was somewhat aggressive because, I assume, he had brain damage from getting too much gas. I did treat him with flagile and he got rid of the giarrdia. He lived an extra 6 months, but he wasn't the same. I am sad cause of his death, but really glad that I can share his story. Please, first of all, beware of water. You never know if your water source will be infested with parisites and giarrdia cannot be killed by filtering water. I think it cannot always be killed be boiling. Also, if your glider has to be sedated, make sure they don't give it too much gas.
Goodbye to Gypsy, and thanks to everyone who has taken so good of care of Gypsy's joeys (you know who you are)

Alison, I can't tell you how large the lump in my throat is on reading this. I am so sorry. I grieve with you, as you know.

As many of you know, my Reepicheep is Gypsy's son, and you can see in the avatar to the left that distinctive look Hippiechick talked about. Carrie T also owns Cider, another of Gypsy's offspring....

But just one note -- Having treated several gliders for giardia now, I'm just sometimes surprised that it doesn't infect more gliders. Even if your cage is pristine, even if you serve water that you know is free of parasites, there's still the possible residue on fruits and vegetables -- or from infected feces.

I'm so sorry, Hippiechick, and hope you'll email or call me if you need to talk to someone who understands and grieves with you! He was a special glider, and I know your heart is broken. May your memories of him really brighten your days as time goes by.

BTW, I had to laugh at your signature.

(PS, please come to our next KY gathering in November!)

I am truly sorry for your loss. My gliders have been infected with listeria, and I've lost a few. I know how your heart breaks when you lose a little glider. My heart goes out to you.

My heart also goes out to you, it is always so hard to loose a glider, especially one who sounds so special

Thanks to you all for the nice, supportive replies. I am sooo sad still, but feel most terribly for Rose & Joey. They are just looking really sad at times. For some reason Rose has been sitting curled up in the food bowl (after she eats), almost like she thinks if she waits long enough Gypsy will eventually come to the bowl looking for food. I know she misses him much.

Oh no! Poor Rose! I am so sorry for your and Rose and Joey's loss, Hippychick. I hope that time leaves your heart with only pleasant and happpy memories of how sweet and wonderful Gypsy was. He knew he was loved.
