This morning I woke up to see Taz running around the cage with a pouch attached to him! I thought I could easily unattach it, because I thought it was just stuck on his nail. Well, it was wrapped around his body and his "pom pom" ! Over night Tabitha had tore the pouch to pieces and all of the thread was TIGHTLY wrapped around Taz's lower body and his "pom pom". He had freed his large "toe" on his hind foot all by himself, it's swollen up, but I want to look at it now that it's been a while to see if we need to go to the vet. His leg was bleeding a little bit, but had stopped by time I found him. My guess is he tried to get it off of his leg and probably started to eat his leg, thank the lord that he didn't and I was able to find him! It took my sister and I about 25 minutes to carefully free Taz, he didn't and doesn't seem to be in any pain. He is using his foot like normal, right now he is sleeping. I'm so lucky that he is okay, I keep thinking "what if it was wrapped around his neck?!" It startled me a lot, but to my surprise he didn't bite us,. we gave him a cracker and he layed on his back while we played doctor. I am so thankful that he is alright! P.S. Should I put an ointment on his foot? I'm not sure if I should, he might eat the oinment!

I am so thankful for you, too. Maybe Taz knew that you and your sister were trying to help. It must have been such a relief for him to let someone else take over for a while. He may sleep quite a bit now. Wishing Taz a speedy recovery, Dorothy , Bandit , and Gypsy

I am glad to hear that Taz is calm and sleeping now. I hope he heals okay. I am sure he was as scared as you were. Maybe you should switch to a nesting box for your little ones since they like to chew on pouches? [ 12-27-2002, 10:10 PM: Message edited by: Candiflip ]

Remo~ Thanks for the wishes, he is up and playing now... NanaKeet~ I know, his poor pom pom! Hmmm...Let's take a look at that foot! LOL Judie~ He may lose his big toe, although he is running around like usual, I have no idea how long it was wrapped around for before he got it off, I think the blood was from him trying to get it off. I'm lucky he didn't start self mutilation. I can see the line where the thread was, I keep looking to make sure that it's not the actual thread!!! Candiflip~ That is an excellent tip. I will get a nestbox or a Chinchilla bath, any idea what I can use for bedding? My gliders like to burrow, I can still use my Pixy Pouch, and probably my pouches that are on their way from Tumble Top Gliders, but no more store bought ones!

For bedding you can use this stuff that come in different colors. I got it at PetsMart Its really soft and squishy. Look in the gerbil section under bedding it should be there.

I am so glad that you found Taz. Hope all is well with him. I had seen a pair of my gliders chew holes into the pouches and the pouches being double layered get in the hole with joeys and almost impossible to get out. I personally do not use any pouches in my cages because of that problem and of course the problem with their nails getting stuck. Anyone that has been to my home has seen that we use rubbermaid containers with a flip up top on it, that my huband has used a large hole drill thing to make a second hole on the side with 2 bolts on the back to attach to the the side of the cage high up. We keep a large supply of material and cut into small blankets to put in there for them to snuggle with and dipose of them when worn out. I am so afraid of a glider getting his/her nail stuck and not finding them in time. This way, just in case they do get a nail stuck the blanket it is light enough to carry around the cage till we see it. We have had several people here that liked the idea and have chosen it themselves. We do have pouches we use, but we keep those for bonding time and we put 1 in the baby joey playpen (cage) when they are getting ready to go to their new home. [ 12-28-2002, 08:55 AM: Message edited by: lovemycritters ]

* * * OUCH !!! *** Wow ! that must have been scary !! WOW !!! I have a chewer too, I keep a couple of straws (the kind that the top of the straw bends over to drink from easily) hanging inside from the top of their cage. They love to chew on these and so far that I can tell, they have never "eaten" any of the plastic since I've been doing this for almost a year now. (I try to replace them nightly with a couple of new ones to destroy.... they never get tired of them.) I also occasionally put a wooden swing type toy in the cage and my JayKay really likes to gnaw on that and then there's the ever loving paper towel roll that keeps him busy and away from his pouches.

I just put fleece blankets in the nesting box. I am sure you got some with all the pouches you bought. If not you can go buy a bit of fleece and just cut your own. Mine like to lay on a blanket and pull blankets over them so I put a few extra in there. Thank you

[:"blue"] Wow... This is something to look back on! We haven't had any incidents since this, and I guess it didn't affect Taz because he looks as good as new and he can still reproduce! Tabitha doesn't chew her pouches up anymore, she loves them and I keep fleece blankets in them! [/]
