I’ve just returned from a family reunion (in-laws) that almost proved to be disastrous for my gliders. Sunday night we went fishing (late), well apparently my gliders had started to bark and were preventing one of my EX-in-laws from sleeping. They got the “bright” idea to move all of my gliders outside into my truck. So they put the gliders into their travel cages and stuck them into the back of the truck. Well the travel cages were never really meant to be used un-supervised, just for traveling. Sometime during the night 8 of the 12 gliders managed to escape their cages into the truck. We didn’t get back from fishing until sometime after 3am and didn’t want to wake everyone up, so we slept on the back porch and unfortunately I never checked on the guys until 8am when I awoke.
Naturally I was quite frantic when I had learned what happened and ran outside to check on the guys. When I got to the truck, I could only find 4 of them. After about 6 hours of dismantling the interior of the truck, whose temperature was over 100 deg by this point, I finally found 7 of the missing 8. Merlin was still nowhere to be found though. I was really panicking at this point because due to the heat index during the day I had been leaving the windows cracked open aprox. an inch. Because I couldn’t find him in the truck, I started looking around outside of the truck. What I found there made my heart sink into the pit of my stomach. There were cat paw prints all over the hood of the truck and also above both of the windows, which had been left cracked. To make matters even worse, I found evidence that one of the males had been trying his hardest to get out of the window (musk and fur up and down the base of the window).
I figured his only hope if he had gotten out was a grove of trees that were in front of the truck. Although my head kept telling me that the cat had done him in, my heart would not let me give up hope. So for two days and two nights, every two hours, I walked around the truck and grove of trees clicking and calling his name. Finally last night I had almost given up all hope. I went and called and clicked one more time (around 11pm) and then went and sat on the back porch. We had to leave this morning and it was really tearing me up not knowing what had happened to him. As I was sitting there, one of my in-laws screamed. Something rather large had jumped on the screen right by his head (have you ever heard a man scream like a lady?). I jumped up to see what the commotion was (actually he scared me to death with that scream) and there is my Merlin sitting on the screen looking at me. I walked outside and he jumped to my hand and ran up and sat on my shoulder, a little dehydrated and hungry but not a scratch on him. I am still in awe that he was able to survive with all of the birds and cats that were in the area.
I guess the morale of the story is, always make sure your cages are secure, and always, always make sure the people who you entrust to watch out for your little ones are not idiots (strong I know, but I am still quite irate about it).

So glad to see that he turned up before you had to return home. In a way I like the gliders angel's suggestion. I can just picture a dozen gliders all perched on the bow of a boat plying through the waves, all wearing itty bitty life preservers. Marvin

How can someone simply "put them into travel cages and put them IN THE CAR!" i guess i was raised with animals in my life so cant really imagine anyone i have ANY relation to doing somehitng like that (Besides, they would ahve to eal with me when there done..lol) im SOOO glad you got merlin back. it was a close one. By him staying close to home showed he loves you and didnt want to leave. i love happy endings!
