I thought I had signed up here some time back, but I guess not since I needed to create another membership. It's hard that my first post will have to be in this area as I just lost my dear Gizzy last Sunday.
I got Gizmo when I was twelve. I had fallen in love at the sight of one on TV, found one in the paper, and raised the most money that I had to pay for something myself. It's been six years, and I still feel like I can just reach into his cage, guide him sleepily into my purse or a pouch and bring him off to a class, church, or wherever.
I brought him around to so many places--right now that just means the more people I have to tell that he's dead.
Around last wenesday when I came back from a college class with him and decided to let him run around my room for awhile since I hadn't let him do so for awhile. usually, he'll wake me up at night and then I'll put him back. Couple of days went by and I didn't really come across him. I wasn't really worried yet, since he's a good hider, my closet door happened to be open, he usually knew to return to his cage for food, and over the years that I've had him he's always popped up whenever I had trouble finding him.
After the couple of days though, we started getting worried. Almost always there were some signs of him being out and about--beanie babies fallen to the floor and and anything rubbery like erasers or remote buttons chewed on. Sunday night before I went to bed, I did a hunt for the normal places he liked to sleep in my room (including a box of clothes, my bed, stuffed animals). I was just about to give up while looking under my bed when I turned my head and saw him motionless in back/underneath my night table!
I don't think it sank in until I got a paper towel and picked him up and started crying. I was so sleepy and just to about to go to bed when I found him but then I ended up walking around crying for awhile and put on the Sound of Music to help me go to sleep.
I felt so bad. The only thing we can think of is that the cat mawed him. There was no puncture wounds that I could find, but there's no other cause I can think of. We've had at least 4 cats for all those years I had him :/ For those times he was out in my room, during the night I was always there and able to wake up if a cat came across him and put him back in his cage and during the day he was pretty well hidden from any cats. I wish I had been more careful that day or had not let him out or something. I don't even know which day he died.
Despite the skunk, the ferrit, the rabbits, the ducks, the cats, the dog, the bird, the turtle, the gerbal, I feel lonely without my one sugarglider so I'm on the search for another one. The two choices currently seems to be a male/female pair under 1 years of age, or a pair of sisters that are both 12 weeks old. I think I'm leading to the two sisters, but I haven't had a response yet from the owner wheras I have from the other one... Well, I'm hoping. My parents agreed to get me ONE sugarglider as an early birthday present, though I think they might let me get one of the pairs.
I just made a thumbnail in memory of Giz so you can see him. He became a real sweet boy, and he liked to be rubbed under his chin (is this normal or was it just him? ^_^), become obsessed when I had gummy candy around, liked to cuddle and fall asleep underneath a huge teddy bear I have, and I'll just miss the guy alot. Thanks for a place that I could share this; I ended up talking about him more than I had planned.

Oh my, that must have been awful! I'm sorry to hear about your loss, but I must say that whatever glider(s) you get next will be very lucky. It's obvious you really loved him. ~hugs~

I'm so sorry for your heartache. There have been way, way too many losses due to cats. The cats follow their natural instinct.... Gizmo will be at Rainbow Bridge and you will see him one day Please, when you get another wee one, don't let her/him out if you're not there to watch. Another tragedy would only break your heart even more - as well as all of ours. I'm so sorry......

I'm so sorry for your loss, and that your first post with us should be such a sad one. May time heal the pain, and let your heart remember the good. He will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for you, until then, you have an looking over your shoulder. Take care,

Sorry to hear about Gizmo, I can't imagine after 6 years of constant care and nothing being wrong finding him dead. I hope time will heal your pain and that the loss of Gizmo will help you be better prepared for the two new little ones. My prayers are w/ you and if you ever have questions I know they're plenty of folks here to answer them.

I am so sorry. I, too recently lost one of my little darlings to my cat. I hope that time will ease your pain. Please remember two things. These new little ones WILL NOT replace your little Gizzie, nor should they be treated like him. Number two: Please please please don't let your gliders out to roam free without your supervision. That is how cat accidents happen. Play with them and let them out, but only when you can watch them. So many things can happen when they are out of sight. I mourn with you for your loss, sweetie, Gizzie is waiting to lick your face all over the place at the Rainbow Bridge....just not for now.....just a little later..... ((((((((HUG))))))))
