Hello,
I'm new to posting, though I have been reading other posts. Anyway, one of my gliders, Sassy has had a problem lately. It started 10 days ago when he started sneezing constantly. Unfortunately it was a Sunday, so I was not able to get him into the vets, though I did talk with their office. He went into the vets the next morning and was given an antibiotic shot and some medicine to take. I was to bring him back in 10 days for a recheck.
He just went into the vets for his recheck. He was still sneezing occasionally, though not constantly (thank God). Anyway, during the course of his exam, Dr Kaiser checked his mouth and noticed that his gums and teeth didn't look good. He did some more checking and one of Sassy's teeth actually fell out in the office. So Dr Kaiser feels that his problem is due to his teeth and that the infection is causing his sneezing because it is making it's way into his sinuses. The low down of all of this is that Sassy has an appointment to go back in next week to have some of his teeth removed.
Has anyone had a glider who has had oral surgery before? How do they get on without their teeth? Did they just have back teeth removed or did they lose their lower front incisors also?
Sorry about all the questions, but I'd like to know what to expect after his surgery.
Thanks

I haven't had experience with this yet, but I will pray for your little one. Let us know what happens. I hope someone here can give you good advice.

Does your vet not feel like the gums can be controlled with more antibiotics? Poor little baby. I have heard of gliders that have lost some teeth and they do fine. But usually antibiotics can take care of the infection.

Please keep us posted.

Glidrz5: I could be off base here but it sounds as though Sassy could have periodontal disease. If so, this would explain infection & a tooth falling out right at the vet's office. You don't indicate Sassy's age or what kind of diet he has been on but diet could have a bearing on the problems with her teeth if previous diet was poor.

Bourbon had a glider (BB) who was taken in as a rescue as she was deemed to be a severe biter. Turned out BB had periodontal disease/loose teeth causing severe pain. Once treated with appropriate medications, the periodontal disease cleared up, the teeth tightened up and BB was no longer biting as she was not in pain.

Before allowing Dr. Kaiser to remove any of Sassy's other teeth, I would suggest you email Bourbon at: []bourbon@iname.com[/] to advise her of the situation you have. It's possible she could put Dr. Kaiser in touch with the vet who treated BB for periodontal disease and Dr. Kaiser could consult with Bourbon's vet about what an appropriate course of treatment for Sassy might be in order to save Sassy's teeth.

Thank you all for your concern for Sassy. I'm sorry that I didn't tell you more about my baby, but my post was getting just a wee bit long.
I've had Sassy for just over 6 years. I'm not really sure how old he is, since he was a wild caught glider. I purchased him from a pet store in Springfield that had some gliders for sale, not realizing that he was not a hand raised glider. I just thought that he was a lovely brown and cream color. I know I was ignorant, but my modem on my computer was a snail at that time, and the book I had read on gliders as research didn't really touch on that subject. Since I've had him, this is the first real problem that I've had from him. Other than the fact that he hated me for the first 3 months of his life with me and tried to rip my fingers off every chance that he got. Then he learned to trust me.
Since I've had him, he has eaten a variety of fruits and vegetables. He really likes mangos, grapes, peas, sweet pototos, squash, and of course the dreaded corn (which is of course his favorite and I do give it to him in limited amounts). He also gets leadbeaters mix, chicken, eggs, some babyfood, glideraid, juice and bugs (superworms are his favorite). He does not care for prepackaged food and will not eat monkey biscuts. On occasion, he will nibble on a nutrigrain bar (he likes blueberry) and has been known to steal a potato chip or crust from a slice of bread or pie. hwell: I've also tried to suppliment his diet with calcium and vitamins.
I'm not sure exactly why he's been having trouble with his teeth, although I think that he and my cat Emmy are conspiring against me. She recently had to go in for oral surgery as well and had 7 teeth removed just last week. (I'd adopted her from the humane society and she's had problems ever since I got her last year. Unfortunately brushing alone wasn't enought.) I think that the two of them got together and decided that they should do something together. I only wish it had been to talk or watch TV or something. Why they decided on oral surgery I just can't understand
Anyway, Sassy is due to go in next week and in the meantime is on antibiotics - Ditrim Liquid. He's been on this ever since he started sneezing 11 days ago and it has helped fight off infection. I'm just not sure that it can do anything to save his teeth. We can hope though

I don't know what the actual diagnosis on that glider is, but speaking from my own (human) experience, i had teeth that were plain and simple shot, due to several health issues, and yet they sat tight, but caused me a lot of infection, and that never cleared up and always came back to haunt me some more, once the antibiotics wore off after a while.
Maybe that's what this glider is going through.
Once i had teeth removed the infection left.

I wish your glider the bets, and hope all will be well.

Welcome Gliderz5
I may have some information for you---Quantas was my baby---he had the same difficulty as sassy is currently going thru---he sneezed almost constantly--the vet put him on antibiotics---the sneezing improved-but did not disappear
Upon the second visit to the vet--he examined his teeth---noticed that he really didn't have many--only on one side and his lower incisors---the ones on the side were in bad condition--and his gums were raw and bleeding---he went under anaestheitic and the vet didn't really use any force at all the remove the few remaining teeth--leaving him only his incisors---once he did that--he continued on his antibiotic course--his gums changed to a nice pink---and his sneezing stopped all together---in response to your question about eating---he ate fine--just as much and as before---considering he didn't have may teeth before---I dont know what Quantas's diet was the first year of his life before I had him----but from reliable sources I've found--he susisted a lot on cat food--which I didn't feed at all
He ate mealworms just fine---skinned them himself with his incisors---of course he just ate the insides--left a hollow shell behind---still ate fruits--his nectar and insectivore fare and his favourite--strawberry yogourt.
Quantas's story did not end up happily as I hope yours will---he had another problem---impacted anal glands
It was not his teeth or lack of--or sneezing that caused his death---He was very active and ate wonderfully until just before---My wonderful vet believes he had a heart attack from all the stresses put on his small body---as he appeared to be just about to jump when he passed away
Do not worry---It sounds as though Sassy will get the better of this problem---gliders are very resilient little critters---more than we think
Best wishes to you Both

I just wanted to let everyone know that Sassy had his vet appointment this morning. He went in at 8am and came home at 9:15am. He was able to keep his incisors, but there was no saving his molars, they were just too far gone. He came through surgery with flying colors and was alert and (dare I say it) "sassy" when I brought him home. I convinced him to eat a few bites of peanut butter and gave him some glideraid and he is now curled up in his pouch next to Zoe. A little bit later this afternoon, I'll try to convince him to eat some babyfood or Ledbetters mix (sp??). Does anyone have any other ideas on what food might be good for him while his gums are healing?

So glad Sassy came through A OK I would avoid and hard food until he is completley healed. Baby food, leadbeather is fine. You can try giving him veggie's and fruits, but see how he would react to it. If he is in pain, then soft food is fine. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

That's great news - I'm sorry he had to lose the molars! What was the cause of the teeth trouble - do you know?
It's great that Sassy is feeling well and "pouching it" with Zoe!

As many of you know, my Sassy had to go in last year and have the majority of his teeth removed due to extreme peridontal disease. Anyway, a few weeks ago I noticed that he wasn't active and was losing weight. He went into the vet and his gums were acting up again. So, Sassy got fluids and pain meds and went on Baytril. He appeared to get better, but when his meds were gone, he started to lose weight again. So back to the vet.
While Dr Kaiser was cleaning Sassy's teeth (Sass was such a good boy through the whole thing and didn't crab or bite at all), another one of his teeth fell out, right there in the office. Then Sass got another round of fluids, pain meds and medicine. The amazing thing is, after his tooth fell out, he started wanting to eat and play, gained back some of the weight he lost and stopped sucking on his tail (he does that when stressed or hurting, a good indicator that something is going on that shouldn't be).
Now Sassy is down to only taking medicine 3 days a week and maybe after his checkup will get to stop taking it again. Keep your fingers crossed. He goes in Friday.

Poor guy. But so glad...the meds are keeping this under control.

There is one other person on the board who has a glider with bad teeth. Chey the assit. administrator. All of the teeth in a young glider of her's are decaying also for no apparent reason.

So far, Sweet Pea is not losing weight, is eating normally and seems to be doing ok, I haven't noticed any progression on her teeth getting worse, but it's difficult at best to check them. Hopefully she doesn't progress too fast, but I am keeping a super close eye on her!

Wow, Chris (and Chey)! Sending prayers all the remaining teeth are okay (don't get worse, at least), and the appetites continue to improve!

Sassy appreciates the prayers and well wishes as well. Unfortunately due to emergency gall bladder surgery (on me). Sassy was unable to keep his vet appointment. I plan on getting him in the first part of next week. I'll let everyone know how it goes. He is eating well though, and that's always good.

Thanks! I'm feeling much better now, believe me. I just thought I had the flu. SURPRISE! Anyway, once it was gone my symptoms disapeared also (what a relief). Now I'm just sore and tired. Don't worry though, I don't need an E-Collar, the pain isn't that bad actually unless I try to move too fast or in some wierd way, and I'm taking plenty of time off work to be sure that when I do go back that I won't overdo it.

Well, I was able to get Sassy into the vets today for his checkup with a little help from my Mom. She was a great chauffer for me since I'm not able to drive right now. Anyway, Sassy is doing well. He's to continue to take his meds 3 days a week and then in 3 weeks we'll check and see what's going on then. Hopefully by the time he goes in next he'll have gained back some more weight. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me. Sass is such a light weight (he was 77 grams today) that I'd like him to gain. Any ideas on what might tempt a very PICKY eater that would be easy to eat without lots of teeth? Let me know and I'd be happy to try it out. Right now Sass is on a BLM diet (which picky as he is he doesn't always want to eat ) He also gets fresh fruit and vegis every day as well as some softer fruit babyfood and yougert (which he also doesn't eat all the time). In addition, He gets quite a few bugs (which I have been cutting open to make it easier for him to eat them even though it's disgusting ). For treats, and I know it's not real good for him (but hey he eats it when he won't touch any other food) he'll get a little bit of peanut butter as a treat. So any other ideas on what he might like to eat to gain weight that might be healthier for him would be appreciated.
Thanks

Think I would continue to feed him as you have. With the meds...this should help with the infection and his weight gain will improve.

Thanks for the update.

Chris, how many teeth does Sassy have left? What do you plan to do when he's down to none? Do you think he will still be able to eat ok? All things I need to plan for with Sweet Pea. Thanks and glad he had such a good checkup! Now you need to get better!
